Has a team that has won the Stanley cup in its history ever moved to a new city ? I don't think its happened.
Sure have, but you got to go back a long way. The Ottawa Senators won a few cups with the last being in 1927. A few years later they moved to St. Louis only to fold the next season.
It has yet, if ever, to happen in the modern era.
FYI, the only Stanley Cup finalist to be moved since that time, 1927, is the Minnesota North Stars. lol
Either way, both cities have teams again.
True, makes me wish Winnipeg won at some point...oh wellI cant see in these times a Cup winner being moved.
You may need to clarify further since non-NHL teams were able to compete for the Cup prior to 1926.byeyimini said:...a Stanley Cup finalist ! You've just provided me with my next (and 1 notch more difficult) trivia question. Awesome !!

There have been a few close calls though:
- Edmonton, and to a lesser extent Calgary, came close in the 90's
- Pittsburgh has had a few close calls in the past, I'd argue they're not totally out of the woods yet
- St Louis (cup finalist) was almost relocated to Saskatoon in the 80's
I have a hypothetical question. What would happen to the Stanley Cup banners, etc if a team were to relocate? For example, let's say the Detroit Red Wings were to move to Las Vegas and become the Aces (I'll pick the most least likely scenario as too avoid a flame war, which could easily happen if teams like Pittsburgh or Edmonton are mentioned). On opening night of the Las Vegas Aces, would they raise the Stanley Cup banners of the former team, or would the banners stay back in Detroit? Or would that depend on whether they would keep the team name (ie Las Vegas Aces vs. Las Vegas Red Wings).
The teams that were relocated in the modern era don't have a proud playoff history to celebrate, so that has never been an issue.
Does Dallas hang any Minnesota North Stars Division/Conference banners from the stands? What about numbers of retired players' numbers? Or do the Wild have that stuff? Or is it erased off the face of the earth?

We are out of the woods...
Basille will be owner by the end of all of this, the land is already bought. All we are waiting on is the Isle of Capri getting the casino, or "Plan B" to take effect. When we know more here in December, we'll know that the Pens will have a new home, a new owner, and more money to be competitive.

Yes the Pens will be a highly competitive team, the Waterloo Penguins will be one of the brightest franchises in the NHL.
Though maybe it will be the Kitchener-Waterloo Penguins. I very much doubt Bassilie bought the team in order to keep it in a 45 year old arena in a market that doesn't have much in the way of economic growth to fill a 20,000 person arena.
I firmly believe that the Devils Stanley Cup in '95 kept them in the city. They were all but packed for Cincinnati, to hear some of their employees at the time tell it.
Did the Avs not keep the Nordiques' retired numbers? I'm thinking of guys like Goulet and Peter Stasney.
Edit: Nevermind, obviously if Paul is wearing #26 this year, it wasn't retired. Kind of disrespectful, in my opinion. Colorado owes its cups to a couple of original Nordiques (Sakic and Forsberg), the least they could do is honour the tradition
