He's had 5 years in our organization and he's been going back and forth between the Rangers and Hartford between scratches all that time. I don't think he's a terrible player but he's not been able to solidify a place in the Rangers lineup that entire time. Next year kind of is promising the same scratches and back and forth. As certain as some people are I don't know if Jones is going to be able to do it next year either. They look at a skilled player. So far I've been seeing someone who doesn't defend all that well.
Becoming a good NHL defenseman is not very easy. There are a lot of things that go into it and just being slick when the puck is on your stick is not enough on its own. Hajek a much bigger player than Jones seem to suffer from confidence issues a bit and under pressure would sometimes wilt. That would be an issue at times even when he was in Hartford but he wasn't the only one. The guys on that team last year who defended the best and were the most consistent from game to game were Emberson and Scanlin.
You're absolutely right about Hajek, he's never been able to seize his opportunity. I certainly don't think he's anything special, but I saw enough games from him over the past few seaons where I thought, "Hey, maybe this guy really can nail down the #6 spot." Of course they were usually followed up by a bad game, although they were
also often followed up with multiple scratches. It's a tough environment to develop in. I also remember after his injury, basically that whole ensuing season, he didn't look right.
I still believe, even at 25, the foundation is there for him to become a decent bottom-pair guy. But, we probably don't have room for him, which is a valid observation. Either way, I feel like best case scenario is he finally takes the next step under a somewhat more disciplined coach in Laviolette and we have cheap depth, the worst case is we end up trading him for nothing, and in between case is he's a decent veteran option in Hartford.
However there's also the matter of what he wants to do, and if I'm Libor Hajek I wouldn't want to come back here. I'd want to get a fresh start somewhere else. Ultimately that's not really his call, but if he expressed those feelings strongly to the Rangers I wouldn't expect them to forcibly retain a guy on the absolute fringes of the roster.
