Prospect Info: Hartford Wolf Pack/Bloomington Bison Thread: Part XV

The Rangers need more AAAA players in Hartford. Having too many AAAA guys has never been the issue. The issue has been that we generally don't have our top-tier prospects playing in Hartford and so the mid-tier guys we have then get pushed down the lineup as soon as the team starts to struggle (which is often). Last season at the end of the year Hartford found a good balance in lines for the most part with the guys like Brodzinski, Carpenter, Leschyshyn, etc. mixing in with the young guys. That's the formula we need to strive for.

Lot of change there recently. Charlotte to Greenville to Maine to Jacksonville in the last 10 or so years. I think Jacksonville was a better draw than Hartford, go figure.

Anyway it has basically no impact on the NHL team. The only time you'll find a prospect of note down there really is a goaltender. And if there's a prospect of note like Gropp that gets sent to the ECHL, he's no longer a prospect of note.

Bigger impact is on Hartford, if they need to recall a couple of guys. I mean it's not a BIG deal but it can make things a bit tricky. I have no idea where the Rangers will go next.

re adding any vets to pack,
already seeing AAA/?AAAA? guys being non qualified this week,
such as RD Brady Lyle and 6'2" C Viktor Lodin
not arguing for those guys in particular,
just saying the market may be rich in non-QO's

Yes we'll be seeing lots of this in the next few days. Cap Friendly is a great source.

From St. Louis:

1. Logan Brown 2. Dmitri Samorukov 3. Brady Lyle

From Ottawa:

1. Gauthier 2. Gambrell 3. Lodin 4. Ferguson 5. Larsson 6. Aspirot

Anyone know about Gauthier?;););)

I would have kept Hajek but that's just me. I know it's an unpopular opinion.

They want to keep Pajuniemi's rights in case he wants to come back. They'll hold those rights until he's 27.

He's had 5 years in our organization and he's been going back and forth between the Rangers and Hartford between scratches all that time. I don't think he's a terrible player but he's not been able to solidify a place in the Rangers lineup that entire time. Next year kind of is promising the same scratches and back and forth. As certain as some people are I don't know if Jones is going to be able to do it next year either. They look at a skilled player. So far I've been seeing someone who doesn't defend all that well.

Becoming a good NHL defenseman is not very easy. There are a lot of things that go into it and just being slick when the puck is on your stick is not enough on its own. Hajek a much bigger player than Jones seem to suffer from confidence issues a bit and under pressure would sometimes wilt. That would be an issue at times even when he was in Hartford but he wasn't the only one. The guys on that team last year who defended the best and were the most consistent from game to game were Emberson and Scanlin.

You're absolutely right about Hajek, he's never been able to seize his opportunity. I certainly don't think he's anything special, but I saw enough games from him over the past few seaons where I thought, "Hey, maybe this guy really can nail down the #6 spot." Of course they were usually followed up by a bad game, although they were also often followed up with multiple scratches. It's a tough environment to develop in. I also remember after his injury, basically that whole ensuing season, he didn't look right.

I still believe, even at 25, the foundation is there for him to become a decent bottom-pair guy. But, we probably don't have room for him, which is a valid observation. Either way, I feel like best case scenario is he finally takes the next step under a somewhat more disciplined coach in Laviolette and we have cheap depth, the worst case is we end up trading him for nothing, and in between case is he's a decent veteran option in Hartford.

However there's also the matter of what he wants to do, and if I'm Libor Hajek I wouldn't want to come back here. I'd want to get a fresh start somewhere else. Ultimately that's not really his call, but if he expressed those feelings strongly to the Rangers I wouldn't expect them to forcibly retain a guy on the absolute fringes of the roster.
