Ballard was the owner for the 60's dynasty to be fair

He was part of the ownership group, but not the owner, per se. Stafford Smythe and John Bassett were also there. And Ballard's contribution was not in player development. He was responsible mainly for promotions. He knew how to make money, but any success they had on the ice was mostly due to Punch Imlach and the hockey guys, not him. So no, I'm not going to be "fair" to the old bastard because he wasn't really responsible for that dynasty. Judging by what he did in the 70s and 80s, there wouldn't have been one at all if he had been the only one making decisions.

One thing that should be pointed out here is that the number of playoff appearances can be a bit misleading. From 1975 to 1979, 12 out of 18 teams made the playoffs. In 1979, it was 12 out of 17. And from 180 through 1990. It was 16 out of 21. Basically, ~75% of teams made it to the playoffs, compared with the 50-53% who have made it since the league went to 30 teams in 2000-01.

The NHL has had several bad owners over the years, but I’m not sure any of them come anywhere near to the level of Harold Ballard.

But HB did not ruin anyone's life except a few hockey players. The Leafs are not life and death, they are not a reason for living.
