OT - NO POLITICS Happy Holidays Edition

Betsy, wishing you a great report and then a fabulous Christmas to celebrate it!
Mounted an old 55 inch tv in the basement, with a few speakers and a subwoofer. Rear speakers are wired but I need shelves.
Got excited and started to draw out plans to mount the 65 in the living room. The Mount is a beast, the walls are double thick drywall, and the electrician put my outlets way too high. So i marked up the wall a bit and I’m going to bed. I’ll remeasure tomorrow before i start drilling.
Here’s the success though. The room is basically halved. Half couch/tv area, and half table/chairs and room for games. Phone is half zoom, i swear it’s not as far away as it looks

Welcome December! It is finally snowing here and we are under a snowsquall watch for a few days. Bring it on! We are putting the tree up today, my daughters still fight over where to put their favourite ornaments. Good, old family fun! They still expect advent calendars (they are in their early 30s). Some things never change and I don't mind. Life is precious, have fun!

How on earth is it December, 2024?
Here’s what I’ve been up to the past few days:
• After much hemming and hawing, I bought the PS5. I went with the digital only edition because it was $50 cheaper and as much as I yearn for the days of physical media and games with beautiful box art and fully illustrated instruction manuals, those days gone. And honestly, who has the space for all that clutter? (Especially with a toddler)
• I can barely tell the difference between PS5 and PS4 other than the load times being drastically reduced. I don’t think I’ll ever be blown away by graphical leaps like I was for N64 or PS2. We’ve topped out here. I’m still enjoying playing the console despite it being more of the same.
• I had a three day stretch there, where I thought I was battling insomnia. I usually get up at 4:30 in the morning, but for a couple of days there it was more like 2 or 3 in the morning. anxiousness over uncertainty in terms of what will happen with my job, I suppose. Water seems to have found its level here. Thank goodness.
• Doing my best to battle through the post Fall marathon lull. This means a combination of treadmill runs (which I hate) and outdoor cold weather runs (which can be miserable). Determined to prevent a winter fitness slide. It’s challenging to be as active during the cold months in this God-forsaken part of the world. Stay tuned. We’ll see what the scale says in about a month.
• I’ve been listening to a lot of Taylor Swift. And I mean a lot. I was familiar enough with the poppy stuff, but took a deeper dive into the catalog. I think I kind of get it now in terms of the appeal. But I find it very interesting how she has been able to find another level of stardom, when her contemporaries such as Katy Perry never quite reached the same heights. Why does this happen? Is T Swift that much more talented than her peers, or was the timing right and she simply caught lightning in a bottle? It makes you wonder why some people who have just as much talent and experience as others never quite reach the same level of success. Athletes, politicians, professionals, you name it.
Anyway, what I’m basically saying is that I’ve always been a creature of habit, and it’s served me well. But you reach a point where you’ve got to break free from tradition and try new things. Otherwise you’re left yearning for the past, seeing the world through your nostalgia goggles while it passes you by.

A few years ago I attended a Super Bowl party at a fraternity brother's house in Somerville that featured a fried turkey. In our case, it was done safely out in the snowy back yard.

Our family joke was always my wife rearranging the ornaments after kids went to bed.
With my knee this year my job was to put on the hangers. I got up to get something, put on one ornament and within 5 seconds she said....that can't go there
Today is World Aids Day. We have come so far in the past 30+ years and are so close to eradicating it once and for all within the next 5-10 years.
I remember learning about HIV/Aids and World AIDS Day from watching Pedro on the Real World San Francisco and from watching General Hospital and learning about Ryan White.
It just felt right to remember all of those who were lost, those who have survived and those who continue to dedicate their lives to eradicating a disease that still impacts society today.

I loved the Xmas tree process. I go live every year, probably will forever, and I'm in charge of the tree (plus the train / fake snow / little town setup). My wife will participate but she's more of a 'just hang the ornament' and I grew up with it being a family event where we talked about where many came from. So now we invite my mom & sister over to do it while she plays more of a host role.
I always had a dog and have been doing to forever. My boy Sherman is the best and never touches the tree. We got a Wheaten Terrier last year who is not so gun-shy, so now every ornament has to be 3 feet off the ground and the little people / animals have all left the town. I thought the train would keep her away but she's convinced it must be killed so that just hangs out too, and every once in a while I have to track down a derailment that inevitably ends with finding a railcar in her bed.
The wife loves the rest of decorating though, she handles all that other stuff, which is a lot and if I woke up from a coma I'd know what season it was based on the setup around living room. Half of our downstairs storage is seasonal decoration boxes.
