However terrible the return was, I'm still glad the Flames didn't sign him. He absolutely wilts in the playoffs. But maybe in a more sheltered role he'll do better

They'll give a shit eventually. This management style is unsustainable.
People are also overestimating how many prospects VGK has traded away. They still have:

2023: Have all these prospects still including Edstrom, their 1st rounder. They didn't have a 2nd rounder but had two 3rd rounders in this draft.

2022: Had no 1st but still have their 2nd round pick in Sapovaliv and the rest of that draft class (though 3rd rounder Gustafson looks like a bust).

2021: They dealt Dean, their 1st rounder but still have their 2nd rounder in Chayka. Had no 3rd rounder but two selections in the 4th still in the organization.

2020: Had no 2nd rounder but have managed to keep their 1st rounder in Brisson despite all these trades and he looks on the verge of a breakthrough. Also had two 3rd rounders, both still in the system.

2019: Traded Krebs who was their 1st but he's been a big disappointment regardless. Their 2nd rounder in Korczak looks very promising at the NHL level and they also had another two 3rd rounders in this draft, one of who, Dorofeyev, has shown flashes of real skill in the NHL this year.

Beyond that they still have Morozov, their 2nd rounder and first pick in the 2018 draft, lighting the KHL on fire and probably coming to North America soon.

They also still have their 1st rounder in 2 of the next 3 years, their 2nd rounder in 2 of the next 3 years and their 3rd rounder in 2 of the next 3 years still.

They've done all this adding with actually nowhere close to the prospect and draft outlay that many other organizations have gone through. That may be the most remarkable thing of all. Essentially they seem to be sticking to a yearly goal of having at least 2 of their first 3 round draft picks basically every year and many years making up for the trade of one pick/asset with tacking on a slightly lower replacement.

Have fun with that contract on the back end.
He is a 2015 pick, so turns 27 this year. 35 when it expires. Better than some others that begin at age 29 and run til 37.

If he gets most of that in SB, then it would be deemed earned in Nevada. To quote "Reacher" series, "Details matter"

It's pretty clearly a Calgary problem.
who has an American GM.

I truly do not think it is an American vs Calgary problem though. The flames are stuck in the muck y middle with an owner who cannot decide which direction the club should go and really should just stay out (but his money so whatever), the rink is a shit whole and the pressure to perform is there.

As a Calgarian I totally get why anyone, regardless of nationality, would not want to play here

With an 8 year contract Hanifin will be 35 when the contract expires. Certainly not an age where Hanifin will be infirm. He'll probably lose a step but he's smooth enough and smart enough to compensate in other ways.

He’s hittin UFA at 27y

You can’t ask for a better age to sign your player to a longterm UFA deal, it’s as safe as it comes

Most of UFA is long-term deals to guys who never played. This is a 27 year old 23+min/game D, not the worst long-term deal you'll see.

Okay but I still don't see what's the urgent need in signing a pending UFA who lands in your city on a long-term deal. Hanifin's not going anywhere until the summer. Vegas have him for at least a playoff run.

Why not wait until you see how he fits in with the team and how he does in the playoffs before offering him a 8-year deal. What if he comes in and he's a bad fit and he completely disrupts team chemistry?

I feel McCrimmon is doing this to show off to the rest of the NHL and to the other GM's, hey look at us we just traded for a top pairing defenseman giving up peanuts and now we have him signed. So that the Vegas Golden Knights can brag about it.

That would be an excellent value for Vegas. Hanifin would get a lot more on the open market, he won't be too old at the end of the deal, and there are plenty of first pairing defenseman in the league that's he's better than who are getting paid more than he would be.

If Hanifin signs this deal then I guess it is time to say goodbye to Martinez. I mean I thought he would be gone even before this trade, but extending Hanifin would pretty confirm that he is gone after this season.
