One thing for sure as another poster said it's nice going into this season with what looks like a real nhl defense.....Initially didn't like them giving up another second round pick but with the potential of a Graves Hamilton pairing is definitely worth it......

Hamilton just posted on IG a “Thank you” post for Canes fans. Can’t wait to see gim in our Red, Black and White. Still so pumped from this signing.

Scott Niedermayer did :sarcasm: Although I guess some can argue he wasn't elite elite offensively and defensively.

On the Niedermayer note am I wrong for thinking Dougie is on a similar level to what Niedermayer was when he left? Niedermayer had obviously just won the Norris and I had Dougie as the Norris front runner in 19-20 before he snapped his leg and then he finished 4th in Norris voting this year

Nieds was defensively much better. Norris isn't about defense at all really so it's a hard standard to evaluate true defensive skill.

Dougie's defensive impact is underrated and he's the best defenseman in the league at driving offense

For me, it's really hard to describe Niedermayer because not only was it a long ass time ago but it was also a completely different game. From what I remember, he was elite offensively and just solid defensively, but not elite...which pretty much is Hamilton.

we had a pretty abysmal playoff record between 97-99 i'm sure there were games where if we had the internet we would have ragged on niedermayer

Niedermayer wasn't really "that" elite offensively.

Here is where he finished among Dmen each year - From 1993 to 2004 he only had 3 top 20 finishes - Two were 3rd But overall he never really put big numbers...He definitely was consistently good though. From 1993 to 2004 he was 10th in the league in D scoring.

1993 34th
1994 24th (Stevens was 5th)
1995 39th (Stevens was 29th)
1996 37th
1997 28th
1998 3rd
1999 13th
2000 21st
01 25th* but only 57 games
02 31st
03 21st
04 3rd

From 93 to 2004 combined top 10
1. Lidstrom
2. Leetch
3. Zubov
4. McInnis
5. Bouque
6. Ozolinch
7. Blake
8. Housely
9. Chelios
10. Niedermayer

Niedermeyer was really what the Norris was made for in my opinion. He was pure balance (Made that way by Jacques Lemaire...Not his choice) - He wasn't the best in the league at Offense or Defense...But excellent at both largely due to the most beautiful stride I have ever seen. The man floated on the ice and did everything effortlessly.
