Proposal: Hagens Schaefer Misa NYI SJS CHI

not sure why the Sharks need to be involved at all here. Just make this a deal between Chicago and New York.
Chicago with the 1st pick means that in theory, they COULD draft Schaefer and leave Misa for San Jose. If the Sharks don't want to trust Chicago to leave them Schaefer at 2, the only way to be totally sure is to acquire the 1st pick.

There's also very unlikely but technically possible scenarios where Chicago moves up to 1 but then trades the 1st overall pick to some other team that wants Schaefer. The only true certainty for Sharks is if they themselves own the 1st pick.

I don’t see why anyone would want Engvall, I think Islanders are stuck with him, or buy him out at a 1 million cap hit for 10 years, if they want him gone.

No, the Sharks are not paying a premium for 1OA. I'd honestly prefer Misa anyways as top centers are a lot harder to get than defense and having too many top centers is a good problem to have as we see with the Oilers the past 2 years. If Misa goes 1 because you trade with Chicago that's fine then Schaefer falls to 2 and the Sharks will still be happy. Also let's be real, as "sure of a pick" Schaefer is, so was Owen Power and we all see how that turned out. The Sharks are not giving up an extra 1st rd pick to move up 1 spot.

In theory yes they could, but in practice they almost certainly wouldn't. If Chicago got hold of the #1 pick they would absolutely take Misa.

SAN JOSE - I think they can very easily manage 3 years of Engvall in order to get Matthew Schaefer. Should be zero issue there. It's year 4 and 5 that are an issue. That's where you're really paying the price. A 2028 buyout results in 4 years of a $1.0m cap hit, with the cap rising a lot. Very manageable, and Schaefer is going to be a stud.

CHICAGO - Same thing. 3 years of Mayfield in order to get Michael Misa should be zero issue. It's years 4 and 5 that are problematic. If you can't trade him and he becomes trash, a 2028 buyout results in a $1.17m cap hit for four years. Not ideal, but manageable with the cap rising so much. If you truly think Misa is on another level compared to Frondell, Desnoyers, Martone, etc, it's worth it IMO.
If that’s all it takes for them to move up, I think they both take that and laugh. I can’t see the Islanders moving down and dumping contracts like that in the same deal unless the additions are too good to be true for the Isles.

Can you be SURE? Can Grier be SURE? Is it worth risking being wrong for San Jose? I can't answer the last question, and neither can you. Only Grier and his amateur scouts can. One thing I DO know is how hard it is to acquire legit # 1 defensemen. Do the Sharks see Schaefer as a # 1 guy? These are the questions we gotta ask.

It's worth the risk because Schaefer is left handed and the Sharks are loaded with top prospect LHDs. You have to figure Dickinson and Muk are both top 4 LHDs going into the future with Dickinson having some serious potential. If Schaefer was righty then the sharks should give whatever it takes but that's not the case. People act like the Sharks D system is complete trash but they have a lot of young talent coming up and most of it is left handed. This is why the sharks if given the choice of anyone should take Misa but both are top talents. This is why they should just stick at #2 pick because they can't lose getting one of the 2.

Reasonably sure since either prospect is an acceptable outcome for the Sharks. Yes 1D’s are difficult to secure but having another high end center when lots of competitive teams are seeking a second center helps the Sharks immensely. They don’t have to rely on Will Smith to be their 2C if he only makes it as a productive winger.

It's easier to acquire a Hischier / McTavish / Bennett level 2C than it is to acquire a McAvoy / Sanderson / Faber level 1D.

Hischier drafted 1OA
McTavish drafted 3OA
Bennett Drafted 4OA

Mcavoy Drafted 14OA
Sanderson Drafted 5 OA
Faber Drafted 45OA (yes rd 2)

Thanks for proving our point that top centers are harder to get outside the top of a draft than top D

All those players would be incredibly difficult for the Sharks to acquire so when there’s an opportunity to draft one, you can live with that pick. I’m for them doing everything within reason to secure Schaefer but that’s up to the Isles and I just don’t think a new GM in a very risk-averse league environment is going to move their lottery won number one pick to get rid of contracts or even pick swaps. The history of this idea doesn’t tend to break in favor of the team moving that pick this close to the draft.

If Engvall sucks we can just dump him in the minors and if he doesn't like it, then he can seek a mutual contract termination. A lot easier than wasting a buyout on him.

I’m personally hoping Darche gets both Duclair and Engvall to agree to a mutual contract termination. Ideally atleast one would be the goal with the other being a buyout.

Can’t see them agreeing to give up that money
I could however see a mutual termination on the part of Duclair, especially with how last season went post injury for him. Engvall actually woke up at one point and started to look decent. If he can do that consistently, he’s worth keeping for now.

Still ten million left on Anthony’s deal just can’t see it happening

With how last season ended and the fact he wasn’t available for locker cleanout interviews (plus didn’t stop to sign for any fans after it), I feel like it’s most likely an end of a Duclair era unless Darche decides to fire Roy.

The complete opposite is true but if anything

If you look at the top centers vs top defenseman(say top 20), you will find it's easier to get a top defensman not drafting say top 5 in a draft then it is top centers/forwards

Drafting/acquiring a top defender is a lot more difficult the timeline of development is longer and more unpredictable than forwards. Top forwards are easier to find outside of round 1 and unlike forwards even highly drafted D have a lot higher of a chance to bust/not meet expectations vs a forward.

I would argue top defensemen are more likely to be found outside of the top 5/10 picks. Not disqualifying what you are saying in terms of development but the fact they are much harder to predict you are bound to stumble upon a top defenseman in the later first round or 2nd rounds.
