The habs are the 7th heaviest team in the league this year. Average height is 6’1 like half the league.
Size isn’t an issue for this team.
im not a fan of two undersized defensmen for a playoff run, but we’re a ways away from there.
On offense, only cole and gally are undersized, and gally doesnt have a key role anymore.
Regarding prospects? Hage is big, Reinbacher is big, Mailloux is big, engstrom is rangey, beck is average but physical, Demidov and Roy are average and skilled. Demidov has a big frame, likely will be over 200lbs.
Our only undersized prospects are Mesar and Farrell… both being assets we can leverage.
I guess more physicality than weight? They have some big guys who are physical, like Xhekaj, Savard, maybe Anderson, Armia, but a lot of their bigger guys, like Guhle, Slaf, and Dach, don't play the body that much yet. It may work out as they age. Guhle has said he doesn't want to bulk up, and I understand it might hurt his game, but it might help him stay healthy and dish out more than he takes. I guess it goes back to Martin with much more focus on getting the puck than on hitting. It's a fine strategy in the regular season, but when you play a team a bunch of times consecutively and the forwards realize they won't get hammered going to the net the play changes.
My concern is teams with bigger, more physical, players wearing down the habs D in the playoffs, while the habs really don't have that many guys able to do that. The cup run showed the value of a few big guys who can defend, along with a captain who can get away with a lot of borderline stuff.
The Leafs biggest issue is they didn't hit on anything after their top picks and spent most of their prospect and draft currency trying to build depth every year.
Knies was a good hit. He's the only one playing on the team.
Minten looks OK and Cowan isn't big.
Shows what I know, I thought Cowan was a big guy, but he's 5'11, 185. Weird that their late picks got better once they needed them, though.
