Chara is not a good fighter. He has a strength and reach advantage over everyone in the league, however, which makes him almost unbeatable. But go watch his fights...Any time he faces a somewhat decent fighter who manages to get inside his reach, he will immediately go for the take down. If he tries to go toe to toe with a decent fighter he'll get his ass whooped, he lacks technical ability to defend himself and is a big ol huggy bear.

Watch his fights vs Laraque. Goes for the take down right away.

So, if I understand your post, the one thing he does wrong in fights, is to

So, if I understand your post, the one thing he does wrong in fights, is to
make good decisions that maximize his results. I'm not certain this weakness
is so crushing, that it makes up for his size and strength. And so makes him
less than a good fighter.

Maximizes his results of not getting corked, yes, but that doesn't make him a "good fighter". A takedown is often unsatisfying. He's a good takedown artist, maybe, but winning a fight like that isn't really winning a fight, particularly if you have such a huge advantage size wise (it's just inertia). I get what waffledave is saying. It's like picking your spots. I would very much like to see a good fighter engage him quickly inside and pop him before the bearhug/takedown (which for him is not far from turtling).

Marinaro this morning was talking with JF Chaumont of Le Journal de MTL from Brossard and they both agreed that Markov and Gionta look like aging vets so far at camp. Both have lost a step compared to what their skating once was.

The main news on Bourque is he can score in the shootout.

Martin McGuire on 98.5 FM said Tinordi looked very good today but MT made it clear he won't stay up to be a spare part.

Haven't heard a single thing on Gallagher so far.

I dismiss Marinaro's assessments since they are intended to follow some story line, not objectivity. Don't know much about Chaumont. Is he a fair descriptor?

Seems then to be a diversity of opinion on Markov. I had heard only
one report from this camp, and one report from the pre-lockout skates. Both
stressed how good/superior his skating looked, compared to the other players.
It would have been useful to have got an opinion from someone who watched
him play in the KHL. Are these reporters considered reliable? I've heard some
reporters spoken of highly, but these two don't come to mind.

Doesn't he train greco-roman wrestling & MMA in the offseason when he's not climbing mountains? Make no mistake his punches are ridiculously powerful. If anything his size sometimes puts him off-balance which is the only way anyone can hope to beat him in a fight. The only person who could go toe-to-toe with him and win is probably Laraque in his prime.

Watching Bourque do interviews on Habs TV and I really hope we dump this loser. He acts like he doesn't give two **** about hockey anymore he's lazy on the ice and his answers are even more lazier. I think he has has caught Wellwood syndrome he's only playing hockey for the money now.

More lazier! There is nothing I hate more than lazier answers from a hockey player. The guy knew reporters would be there, jeez put in an effort and do your homework Bourque!

Did he atleast give us a "You know we gotta keep working out there and the bounces will go our way" or maybe the classic "We gotta give a full 60minute effort and do the little things"?

I didn't see the interview but I hope he was atleast doing some push-ups or running on a treadmill while they talked to him. What does 3.3 million buy nowadays? Geez.

I really don't trust Marinaro for anything but dumb entertainment, I remember after the Bourque trade he was ranting that Bourque is so finished can no longer skate...and as poor as Bourque has been I'm not seeing that one.

I wouldn't have posted it if Marinaro had said it while doing the show by himself, but Chaumont was definitely in agreement with the statement. Heck Chaumont may have been the one who brought it up. Can't recall exactly.

If your only loses are "unsatisfying' wins by take-down, and the rest of your
fights are overwhelming wins, this guy must feel pretty intimindated by now.
Especially since only the biggest, and what you call "best", try him at all.

Tony Marinaro's opinion is worth that of a potato.

He has his players that he likes, and his stories revolve solely around proving that he's right. He'll make a call and then fight for that call all season. Eventually ignoring what he said or coming back to it to say I told you so.

Veterans not skating at full speed n practice? Wow hard to believe Don't worry Gionta will be buzzing by opening season. Markov is Markov he always looked lackadaisical at times but quietly gets the job done.

I know that this is a little bit off topic but why didn't Montreal sign Jagr? He has said it himself, that he wanted to play for Montreal (he said it when he was asked, after he signed for Dallas). 1 year of $4.5M ain't that bad. Montreal got around $9M to spend. Plekanec and Jagr are great friends. They are both from Kladno, and they have some crazy chemistry together. Both in the national team and in the Czech league this lockout.


Stats from both players when they played for Kladno:


Plekanec: 32 GP, 21+25, 46 points

Jagr: 34 GP, 24+33, 57 points.


I think that Jagr would have been great on Pleks wing. Great friends and as I said, their chemistry on the ice is extremely good.

And it would be nice for the fans seeing Jagr for his possibly last NHL season playing in Montreal. The man is a legend.

alright how many times as this been mentioned in the last year, why sign a guy for one year and give us false hope, were better off finishing where were supposed to with the crew we have and let them grow together.Now if Jagr still had 4-5 healthy years I would agree.

Trying to get feedback on how players look in practice sessions is borderline useless. Gio and Markov are vets, they are not fighting for spots, they are working on timing and stick skills more than power and speed. While Gallagher has to see it the other way around, he has to be aggressive without making too many enemies.

Normally we get some games in to evaluate players, this won't happen this year. The evaluation is already done, there are little spots to be won or lost. The Intra tonight will be the only real competition.
