How does buying his contract out make more sense than waiving him?

If he's send down, it gives the habs extra depth + helps Laval make the playoffs.

If his contract gets bought out there is no gain since the habs will already have a lot of cap space. There's only negative with this scenario. The habs will have his buyout cap hit for 2 seasons instead of his regular cap hit for 1 season.

It makes no sense to send Hoffman to the AHL. 16 pts and 8 goals in 34 games is not horrible. That prorates to 39 pts and 19 goals. We know he is a flawed winger and is underperforming, but does this warrant a AHL demotion for a player who has one more year in term? These are the type of moves you make when you really need the cap space.

I didn't like this contract from the get go. Brings me back to Bergevin miss managing Danault and letting him walk while we swapped KK for Dvorak and signed Hoffman and Armia.

What's done is done. Hoffman is a Habs and let it play out.

Good results!

Can somebdy tell me why xhekaj doesn’t play more? Wtf?

What's the rush? Do you think his development is not going well cause he is getting 13-14 min a game? His time will come and he's progressing very well. That's all the matters.

I was entertained by the come backs, I know it was better for our draft prospects but hot dog(Molson) , to beat the laffs then the BOOO-ins would have just been too sweet.

Ah well, Sammy seems like a legit goalie !

Both the Bruins and Leafs walked away from those games with a feeling that we are not that easy to beat... even with lots of guys from the AHL. I actually think our team is better with some of the guys we have on IR at the moment. The young players are showing up with high intensity

Subban quote: These fans will love you if you leave it on the ice and play to your best ability every shift. I'm sure several players got that message and it fits

No, its not, sounds like very fragile masculinity to me, but you do you boo 😘
You ask a question, I give you an honest answer that you don’t like, just so you can project some pseudo psycho virtue signalling, and sign it off with the least intelligent phrase since “it is what it is…”

Congratulations SJW, you have successfully shown the internet that you will never back down when called upon to fight for the rights of all middle aged nose ring wearing male reporters everywhere, while passive aggressively insulting all who dare not embrace your views. You are the hero we all needed.

Its just very funny how a nose piercing can rile up some dudes.

I might get one.

And how it can be perceived as an insult by said dude, when its really not insulting.

At the end of the day, why do you feel like that if its not because it is feminine or juvenile to you? It is adjectives you chose to give to a non-gendered artifact.

I'm in my early 30s @sandviper. Nevertheless, I've listened to countless stories told by players and coaches on either side of the fence, and have watched some of the battles between Bowman's led Habs against dinosaur Don Cherry's Bruins.

Anyhow, in terms of hatred/repugnance, the Bruins are in a class of their own. I don't mind the Leafs, the Sens, the Flyers. f*** Boston.
Hate the Bruins.....................bunch of diving whiners the last 10-15 years..............Marchand last night with the huge dive into the pool after Matheson gave him a tap, was embarassing....he should be fined for that dive.

My beef with Hoffman is, more with MSL and having him out there, when he shouldn't be at the end of the game, and the net empty. It was Drou and now Hoffman.............we have given up several empty net goals because of these two clowns, and their poor play at the blueline with the game on the line.
That being said at least last night, they were in the game, and played well......

I don't mind the type of game last night that leads to a L. Youth are developing and Hoffman helps us loose.

Watched the game late last night. I solid respectable effort. Proper result. Too bad Xhekaj didn't nail anyone or beat the crap out of. Oh well... there is always next time.

Hughes needs to have a serious chat with Montanbo. The dude is not on board. It was way too close last night. Is Allen ready?

Sounds like some good tank results from other games too. Overall not a bad night. Replacing struts sucks ass.

I would offer a third round pick for a team to take Hoffman contract off us

It would likely have to be a 2nd. I'd be ok with 2024, but not this year, as it's top 40.

Just buy him out and be done with it IMO. The cap penalty is $1.6M for the next two years, which is easily manageable.

The best might be if we could find a 'change of scenery' type deal and trade him for another player who also has one year remaining that might be a better fit. We have a lot of expiring contracts and we'll probably need a couple vets to round out the roster. I'd just rather that vet not be Hoffman.

He has a great shot and does nothing else well. I can't believe Bergevin was stupid enough to sign a guy who a year previously went to camp on a PTO. Incompetence

I'm not arguing we should send Hoffman to the ahl. I'm arguing it wouldn't make sense to buy out his contract when we can just send him down. I don't expect either to happen, but if we were to do something, sending him down would a lot more sense than buying his contract out.

Next year cap space doesn't go up, then the following year it should. Strategic buyouts next year to capitalize on opportunities when cap space is worth a lot more and can be weaponized (like we did this year). I'm sure HuGo will consider all options.

The habs already have enough cap space to do whatever they want next season.

This is what our expected 23-player roster for next season looks like + Edmundson traded:

Caufield (7.5 M contract) - Suzuki - Slafkovsky
Farrell - Dach - Anderson
Ylonen - Dvorak - Gallagher
RHP - Evans - Hoffman
Armia

Matheson - Savard
Guhle - Barron
Harris - Xhekaj
Wideman, Kovacevich

Allen
Monty

48.39 M forwards
13.82 M dmen
4.85M Goalies
0.833 Alzners buyout cap hit
--------------------------
67.9 M

That's 15.6 M in cap space.
Buying out Hoffman's contract just to save 3.3 M for next season and have a total cap space of 18.9 M instead is not needed.

Felt the same way when we played the leafs, was satisfied with the effort and would have preferred the same type of loss, does anyone miss Armia,Drouin.....NOT! hope they find a way to get rid of Hoffman and the other two dead heads.

I keep thinking Hughes needs to seriously start looking for a possible solid goaltender for when we are ready to start contending but maybe we already have him. Monty is really impressing me and starting to have long stretches where he's dominant.

That Slovak goalie Gajan from the WJC should be considered in the 4th round range if available

I think Edmundson is more of a next season type of trade unless someone gives Hughes a good offer. Habs arent in any rush to move him and his play hasnt been great this year with injuries, could wait and see how he rebounds next year with better health/play.
