Post-Game Talk: Habs lose to Detroit in embarrassing fashion.

Apparently we loss because we don't have a good replacement for Pezz. If we had Heineman, we would have won for sure
The team is definitely missing one of the best young bottom 6 players in the league. Pezz is being stapled to the bench for most of the game and is useless.

They are also hitting a wall because of their intense play over the last month. We saw the same dip against the Hawks 20 days ago, only to see them bounce back. The Lightning just lost to the Leafs and Habs, and the Wings just came off a 3 game losing streak, it happens. The only reason anyone cares now is because of our surge in the standings.

I didn't post much last night but I did get a chance to read it. Monty carried our asses since the streak began and faced 30 shots through two periods but isn't a bum all of a sudden because there is a new kid on the block. The majority of the team was probably hoping for an easy victory over the struggling Wings but instead faced a determined bunch and they weren't able to respond.

You could see this coming from miles away. MTL was red hot for a while, but that was a perfect storm where ALL players where engaged and goalies where their best impression of Price. The defensive scheme is better but far from perfect. If G are not at their top and let some weak ones in, you see quite fast the breakdown. They are still struggling to defend in their zone. To many random pass and not enough support. Dumping the puck in the neutral zone and hope a forward can chase it down IS NOT a winning strategy. Offensively, I find that the 1st line is being pushed around too much.

People are thinking that the rebuild is done, there are big holes in this line up.

Other thoughts:
I liked the Armia - Evans - Anderson line yesterday. This to me this is our 4th line next year if we can resign Evan and Armia at decent prices. Bonus point for all of them being key players on the PK.

I can't stand Dvorak. I know he's the only LH C, but man he's a useless player out there. Gally is trying hard but he's 5 step behind and while he play on the PP2, he's not doing much.

The Hutson/Matheson duo has to stop. Hutson need a physical partners and Matheson is a turnover machine.

CC - Suzuki - Demidov
Laine - XXX/Dach - XXX/Dach
Heineman - Newhook - Slaf
Armia - Evans - Anderson

Guhle - new RD
Hutson - new RD
Wifi - Carrier

We are missing Heineman yes but that was not the reason why we lost last night.

club tired
PP2 is usless, need to shake up that PP2
A mix of young players who are not used to play 80 games. Slaf has only one 80 games season played in career. Hutson has none. Haineman none. Coupled with Dach and Laine who missed lot of games the last two years. Along with goalies who have no exp being number 1 and playing 50+ games.

The vets are not as good as people think they are. People already forgot 2021 tp 2024 and it's honestly sad and pathetic that people can forget this easily. This is not a good group of vets. They are being carrier by Caufield, Suzuki, Hutson, Laine and the goalies. It's easier to do well if you don't have the pressure to be the one the team rely on.

I still strongly believe this is madness to not sell at the deadline, to resign everyone and to expect this team to have arrived. Complete madness imo and i hope our management think clearer than that. We should just be happy the team is competing and Laine/Dach are healthy. This is a move in the right direction.

But we should be cautious and take the baby step approach. We should still be piling picks to be in the best possible position in june 2025 at the draft to make a major move if the possibly arise. Next year is the year i've been saying it since day 1. Best way to acquire star playets in their prime is to either draft them or have lot of picks and prospects to trade for one. Nobody will give you Elias Petterson for Gallagher, Anderson and a broken stick

We should have also lost the previous game Monty saved the team in that game.

PP1 works, PP2 is useless. The fact they aim for 1min vs 1min is wrong. It should be 1min30 vs 30 seconds. We’ll score much more if the 1st PP gets those 30 seconds.
Exactly. If you have no PP2 players that is the time to have PP1 on the ice the whole 2 minutes. Playing pp1 the whole 2 minute like the Rangers have done for years when you have players like Laf and Kakko that are capable is stupid.

I wouldn't be surprised if this game starts some sort of slump for the team.

They're still young, it's bound to happen before the end of the season.

Hopefully, it doesn't.

:skeptic:
Who's cosplaying as whom on that list?

The real bad move was closing the tank thread.
There never was a tank, so no. From the beginning HuGo mentioned the mix, traded for help in Laine and Carrier. So they are true to their word. This site needs to learn what tanking really is. Hint, it's not what the Habs have been doing this year.

The last time we allowed 40 + shots was against the New Rangers. On October 22th 2024.

We allowed 40 + shots against the Detroit Red Wings. On January 23th 2025.

Folks, the habs are allowed to lose, and lose badly without it being the end of the world/requiring an elaborate explanations. Teams lose.

The habs been progressing well since November. That is a good stretch to afford good will for losses like this. They happen to every team. Learn and move on.

Agreed. We knew the Wings were coming at us hard after 3 L's in a row on the road.

Imagine, the East wild card race gets tighter. This is going to be one hell of a race.
This is all good, every game counts and hockey is exciting again!

oof is he ever slow, makes Hall Gill look like Newhook
He is still far from his normal level of play when it comes to pace. There is no way to speed up recovery in conditioning, it takes time.

For 4-5 min's a game? Come on man. That is not why we lost last night. We lost because the Wings were desperate and the Habs are not winning every single game.

They were double shifting players because of the inept play of Pezz and that line .They shortened the bench early .Suzuki and company were exhausted.

Sure but that's been done before by the Habs and other teams. Are we going to nit pick to astronomical levels when we loose a game?

Suzuki played 20:21 min's. Pretty standard. If he played 25+ min's, maybe I would engage into your context. He played 22:29 against the Rangers bud. His average on the season is 19:31.

It still applies. Pezzetta has been a non existent 4th liner for what 5 games. It may be catching up with them now.

We definitely can't keep having a guy playing 4 minutes a game. Call up a kid and ice him and live with the mistakes. That's what a rebuild ultimately is. Call Davidson up and give him 12 minutes a game. He's probably the more NHL ready prospect.

The restaurant or the octopus?

This and the Leafs is a reminder that that NHL is hard and it's not going to always be sunshine.

Hutson not looking as good these last few games is a good test for him. It's unreasonable to expect him torch NHL without any hiccups as a 20 year old rookie.
He definitely had a rough night. I am beginning to think that he and Matheson are playing too much and it is beginning to show. We know that Matheson is much better when not expected to be a #1, and Hutson is still a rookie despite all his skill and upside. I'd love to see them as the second pair, but we are missing that elusive 1RD to make that happen. I think that would have 3x the effect of adding Carrier to the team.

I'd play Laine the full 2 minutes. The opponent behaves differently when he's out there, he ties up one guy of the 4 defenders. This would help the 2nd PP as well.
