Post-Game Talk: Habs lose to Detroit in embarrassing fashion.

I'm not just talking about these 2 games but his career overall. Winning a cup usually requires a stronger performance from the goalie than what Monty has been able to offer so far. During his 8 years in the NHL, he has pretty much been smack in the middle average.

He's by no means a bad goalie, but thus far he hasn't really been able to find that 2nd gear that you'd need in order to help the team win a cup.
Not sure, same was said about Hill, even Bob (even though it is mostly contract related for him), Kuemper... You Never know when a goalie will go on a crazy run. But I agree that given the fact that MTL top players are not top of the league they likely would need a better goalie to help them win a cup

All of those guys had a history of success though. Bob, Hill, Kuemper, all had several seasons where they were putting up .915 SV% or more. I just don't know if Monty has that in him.

Habs decided not to show up for this game. Bad team to chose that in big game. Gave up 45 shots, not going to win often playing like that. Their second loss in 4 games, is the heater over?

Hutson point streak stopped, never set the record. Not the same team without Heineman

Monty has always been the stop gap to Dobes & Fowler taking over. We're not trading him right now. He battles hard. Team likes him.

I mean he's not even in the top 25 for salaries for goalies in the NHL. He's 30th.

Boston's back-up Korpisalo makes $4m, and he truly sucks. Georgiev & Fedotov make more money and they're truly atrocious.

We're paying him $3.15m. He's a work horse, but right now, he's struggling a bit.
Hot Monty was one of the main reasons why the winning streak started upon Laine returning December 3rd. But as of late, his game has been much worse, with some "bounce back" games. Fortunately Dobes has been pretty incredible most of his 5 games, and I think his play warrants more games, at least 50-50 split with Monty.

Were there any details released about the traffic incident involving Heineman? The team is really missing him and Pezz being an inadequate replacement is hurting the team. I would like it if they called up another player to play with Evans and Armia.

Davidson or Condotta?

Sad that Hutson lost his point streak, he was close to setting a new record. He’s quickly becoming our MVP — as a rookie dman this is simply phenomenal.

The future of the Habs will be determined by the players who show up, not by the ones who need every excuse made for their torpor and inconsistency. The best players show up to make an impact and don’t need a golden invitation letter to do so.

It's nice to see all the reasonable takes in here. No overreactions at all.😄
Bad game by a rebuilding team, nothing to see really.
I thought they seemed tired, was obvious looking at the effort level of PP1 vs PP2.

So we lost that 4pts game. I knew the final result when I saw the lack of energy in the first period.
I hope they will play better vs the Devils, who are a top team. Have to see it for myself.

Laine looks like an opportunistic floater half the time he's on the ice.
Teams knows now how to cover him in PP. He have no chance to shoot. I knew some day other teams would adapt. Habs have to work on new pattern in PP.

Silver lining: The monkey is definitely off Kirby Dach’s back.

The rest of the season should be fun for him + the Habs to evaluate his long term viability as the Habs’ 2C.

Dach has been on 60 pts pace lately... which is what we expected or wanted. Short span but gives us a little glimpse of what he can do.

Wings were on the road for a 4 games and lost 3 in a row before coming home. Habs were coming off 2 wins in a row at home.

Sucks that we could not get this W but we can't win them all. This is going to be a heated race with lots of up/down points along the way.

Which is fine with me most nights because we have so many other players with great compete levels.

But last night they were flat or outright bad.

Can’t win them all, and won’t look great in all of them. The habs have played very well for quite a long stretch, long enough to earn some good will.

Agreed. We knew the Wings were coming at us hard after 3 L's in a row on the road.

Imagine, the East wild card race gets tighter. This is going to be one hell of a race.

Not a great game at all by the team as a whole.

Goaltending need not apply.

Bunch of breakdowns but this is another of a long list of games that show Monty is not a #1 goalie. He remains far to volatile from game to game.
He has had some great games, and moments, but just not consistent....
I still like our tandem for the rest of the season, MSL has to adopt a win and your in mantra. He wont, but he should....
Let the hot hand ride the wave, the Bruins got years out of the Ulmark/Sway team.

Detroit neutralized the Canadiens offense from the D (for the most part), and took advantage of them in the O zone, especially Matheson & Hutson. What was Matheson doing with the belly flop on Larkins goal ?

The next 8 games are going to be painful.

The Pez experiment is just stupid, playing a guy under 5 minutes makes zero sense. They need to call up someone that they can trust that plays a regular shift while Emil is out.
Beck is Laval best player most games and couldn't even hit 10 minutes.
