Thats a tendency of Matheson that Ive noticed a lot. If you get by him he doesnt do much to try to at least make it hard to get a good shot off l. Matheson is no doubt in a role he is not suited for and it's not his fault. Ideally he's a #3 who is paired with a shutdown stay at home D who can cover for him defensively.

It's not just a "role he is not suited for", Matheson is avoiding contact. Opposite players are always standing between him and Monty and he just present his ass to them. No stick tying, rarely try to clear them out. You rarely see him poke pucks away or keep close to a player to get the puck.

The have to revamp the bottom six and add size, physicality and grit. These guys have to be tough to play against. Habs are a soft team with many smaller guys.
The bottom 6 has some of that but they need guys with those attributes with some abiiliy to set up scoring chances and finish plays. And of course make the oppostion nervous

That's why I have enjoyed Anderson this year on the physical side. Dvorak and Armia are f***ing useless physically, its disgusting. Evans doesn't play this type of game either, and Gally is too small to make a dent. I hope some of the kids in Laval can make this team and bring that element we are missing so much.

Sooo they were gonna pay tribute to Laine, but after his comments pulled back, not the brightest thing for PL to say, :booboo:I’m sure Marty wasn’t too happy about adding another hurdle to the game plan.PS.oh well the season isn’t a total loss, to see the Rangers imploding is “Priceless.”:naughty: Thank you hockey gods .I’m sure Price has a little grin on his face right about now

Well the good news is teams now know that if you rough up Laine a bit he will go hide in the locker room.

There probably aren't a lot of goaltenders who can. While there were some goals he should have stopped his teammates should have been making his job easier considering his workload. Team defense was terrible.
There were multiple defensive breakdowns in the first period but after that, I thought the team played well and deserved a better fate.

I think we have to be realistic about our expectations for this team. It’s a transition year for Montreal and some (many) of the current players will be moved whether this year or next.

But, win or lose, it’s a highly entertaining team (with a number of highly skilled players) to watch, and what more can one realistically expect or ask for in the midst of a complete rebuild.

So everyone should just relax and have a happy and healthy New Years with the knowledge that the cavalry (Demidov, Hage, Beck, Tuch, Fowler, etc.) is coming. And coming fast.

But Dach only gets 20 games.
Jake has played well for a long time. Jake works hard every night even when he isn’t producing and that isn’t anything new. Jake doesn’t get top 6 line minutes nor does he get PP time.

Jake is a 7th round pick not 3rd overall.
Btw - it’s been 34 games of Kirby suckage.

We played an extremely sloppy 1st period. It was hard to watch. Turnovers, soft in battles, scattered all over the ice when the opponent was attacking.

We got much better as the game went on.

I wouldn't blame Montembeault. We allowed some very dangerous chances, and he bailed us out multiple times.

I had the impression Dach was moving much better than in recent games. Much fewer plays died on his stick. At the same time, it's obvious he's not in a good place mentally.

Evans' line is a killer. All three of them are playing very well.

Dvorak is not a favorite here, but he's been making smart plays all over the ice in recent games. I would certainly not exclude him as an option for next year if we can't retain Evans.

Matheson had a poor game.

He’s not meant to play so many minutes and have so many opportunities to make mistakes. It’s not fair to him or the team but we don’t have someone ahead of him.
Well said. Matheson is the least of the problems on this transitional team. It would be hard to find a replacement for this highly mobile defenceman who plays 24-25 minutes a game, who can play in all game situations, who’s on pace for 40-50 points and who is paid under $5 million per annum.

As you said, if MSL had a better option, he would use him.

He doesn’t. So Matheson, who is on a very team friendly contract, is not going anywhere.

So, lots happened yesterday re Laine after he dissed the management of his prior team but BJ players took it personally.

First, a video tribute of his time in Columbus was supposed to play on the scoreboard but was pulled:

Then, BJ players weren’t just hitting Laine aggressively but allegedly with one thing in mind. As per mental midget Lavoie (wish there were another source, so not sure this was actually the case):

Finally, I don’t know about the following clip, I mostly notice empty seats:

We also learned that Laine’s teammates did nothing about it it but then again, they may have not wanted to alienate their future teammate Mathieu Olivier.

If they are so mad about what Laine said about the previous situation, why aren't they getting rid of Waddell who runs the team now and said the same thing?

Why did they take it so personally coming from an ex teammate, and have no issue with it coming from current GM?

Laine was asked about Olivier's 9 goals in the pre game and he had nothing but good stuff to say about the guy.

But you can bet the house that who ever quoted Laine's comments for these guys, didn't include all that good stuff because it didn't serve the purpose.

He took a couple of legal hits, nothing blind siding or illegal. He should have kept his mouth shut
💯%

Trash talking before a game is an age-old gateway to an opposing team’s bulletin board material (do they even still have bulletin boards in dressing rooms?).

Something frowned upon by all pro sports but Laine didn’t see fit to STFU.

Interesting take.

I disagree. The whole 'they reacted because it's true' is often rubbish. People react or don't react for different reasons. His Habs example doesn't prove anything either. Different individuals, different reactions. Some people want to defend themselves against BS, while others just let it slide. 'You reacted because it's true' is just a silly tired myth. Might be true in some cases, while false for others.

I didn't notice Laine trying to hide himself. He had one hit, passed very well under pressure, in small space. Yes, he still has skating issues, which led to some problems, but that's understandable.

If I understand correctly, you have proof that Laine didn't want to continue, right? 😉
