Post-Game Talk: Habs lose, eliminated from playoffs.

I don't understand why this isn't the year to get more sandpaper? One does not exclude the other... get 2C, get RHD, bring Reinbacher and bring at least 3-4 players that play like capitals play. All are doable. Dvorak, Armia, Evans, Kapannen, Laine, Newhook et Co can all GTFO. Keep Anderson. Nobody will take Gallagher, with all due respect. But toughen the team up, FFS!

Is it hard to do all that? Sure.. but I believe Hughes doesn't exactly work for minimal wage. He gets paid more than most people in their lifetime to do hard things. No excuses from management this summer. The rebuild was the easy part... now the real GM'ing begins.

What you are suggesting is to overhaul 6 roster spots in one summer.

Doable? Maybe
Practical? Probably not

It would be the biggest overhaul since 2009.

Good year to build on. Hutson was a revelation. Absolutely Calder-worthy. Suzuki cemented his status as a top center, especially of the 200-foot variety. MSL showing that he is a good motivator for the most part, but should embrace more robustness, especially against heavy teams. Hopefully he is self-correcting in that regard. The team needs more skill-with-pace-and-size overall, at all positions. Hopefully Hage matures quickly and is a year or so away, while Reinbacher keeps rehabbing preemptively and limits days squandered in the clinic. Sign vets like Dvorak, but trade them over time as younger players make them expendable.

Hughes doesn't make minimum wage, but I wouldn't exactly expect him to say, whelp, the rebuild is over lets overhaul half the roster to compete next season.

This shouldn't be a Gainey in '09 or Bergevin in '16 offseason.

I still think we lost the series in Game 1. We had all the momentum going into OT and if we take that first one in their barn, they would have folded. Caps fans have overtaken Canes fans as my least favourite in the NHL. Vegas fans knew next to nothing about hockey but at least they were pleasant.

Well I hope to God it's neither of those...

McDonagh for Gomez

Goodbye everyone... hello Schlemko.

Definitely would have made the series much more entertaining that's for sure. That whole sequences that led to the OT goal was a big momentum killer, the missed pass by Laine, questionable icing call...

Depends. Ball is in kent's court now. He will need to magically find an actual second line center. We need a crash and bang fourth line that can help in playoffs with physicality. We cant use the excuse of reffing anymore. This is what the league wants. We need to adapt.

Also, i know he is forgotten but a miraculous comeback from kirby could also benefit the habs. I would add as well some sort of andersson clone on top of that.
In the mix was done

Contender mode is loading

Schlemko was '17, '16 was the Eller and Shaw trades, the Subban/Weber trade, Radulov, etc.

Incredibly active offseasons almost never work out. The Capitals offseason last year is a major exception. The best one the Habs had in recent memory was '20, and even that aged poorly for them.

I think we need two things this offseason. A good RD to eat some minutes and a 2 Center. Get those and it fixes a lot.

I'd love to get a big winger for line 2 as well but maybe we just live with Laine for now. Dach will also be in the lineup next year and we've got guys like Beck knocking at the door. So maybe we just play it out and see what happens.

But we absolutely need some depth on D and a 2C.

They were in every game to the point that every loss came with an empty net finish.

Ultimately, when you have such inexperience and a lack of depth, all those little plays are going to add up.

Just need to take a step back and see where the Habs were at this point last spring. It's a roaring success.

My wish list is that the habs get a legit 2nd line center. Hopefully reinbacher is able to take a step as well.

Because as it stands, the leafs, lightning and panthers probably are not going away next year, so you're looking for a battle in for those 2 wildcard spots against a crapload of candidates.

Agree with you, for me what's a must is a #2 center hopefully Crosby and a top 3 D (not talking) Reinbacher...

I think we can overtake the Lightning next year. They may be looking at some relatively major changes after getting bounced by the Panthers in 5.

Some of their key guys are getting long in the tooth but as long as they don't panic and start obliterating their inner core, they should still be back as a divisional seed.

Argh... feels like doldrums of summer already... Bleah. Gross!

Sigh...

Need something... like a leafs loss tonight. At least some entertainment reading leafs board and watching Steve dangle lose it. (don't get me wrong... I like the dude... rispek cause he was openly and genuinly cheering for the Habs during the 2021 run).

Though I truly think Leafs will win tonight...

Both Xhekaj and Struble will both be solid D men for us. Sometimes, it takes a while for those D to mature and some players mature faster than others.

Wait until they are both age 25+ and you will see the real potential. That applies to so many young players who are secondary parts after the core.
They are only going to keep 1 of the 2.
And most likely it'll be Xhekaj

It is bright if they continue doing the right things.
Dach, Laine and Newhook trades have not delivered the expected results.
Laine has delivered for what he’s supposed to do and that’s score. Would love to see him do better 5v5 but the guy was almost leading the league in PP goals with like 20 less games played or more I can’t remember. He’s been injured for a while now and people seem to forget that. I wouldn’t doubt that he scores 30 next year easily
