Post-Game Talk: Habs lose Blackhawks in a Shootout. Fail to clinch Playoffs.

Stole this from Reddit, but this is what Gallagher was arguing to the refs about:

Once Laine shot, it was too late to go back and change Nazar's shot to a goal call.

Demidov should have shot first anyway.

Newhook cannot be the 2C any longer. He kills nearly every play when he has the puck - skates it to nowhere and turns it over, takes a dumb as hell shot with his absolute muffin, which he misses the net 90% of the time, or he makes a brutal pass to a man who’s covered. He’s an absolute turnover machine, sucks defensively, and sucks at faceoffs. You have a player like that playing 2C and it’s gonna be hard to win most nights. I feel like we’d be batter off with Kapanen at 2C and he’s green as hell. But that’s how bad Newhook is.
I’ve never said he was a good 2nd center, everyone knows he isn’t. He’s just not someone to blame tonight.

While I commend their effort for the most part, a part of me worries even if they do make it in. The reason why is that this isn't sustainable hockey. You can't ask players to always perform at 100% during the regular season like it was the playoffs. Sure you might make it, but you won't have any gas left in the tank to go four rounds. They need more and better talent. They've already wasted a few opportunities a the draft and they're already looking to get out of the rebuild despite lacking depth.
We looked like complete trash going into the Covid playoffs and got in ass backwards. Played a good game 1 and then complete trash for 3 games before fixing things. Of course we don’t have a Carey Price again but we do have more high end talent depth and I think they will play a lot better than they have been lately. The defense pairings need to be changed, it’s not good at all.

Time to cheer for a Michkov hatty tomorrow lol.

That's 6 games in a row where the team played bad.
Against Philly, they were ok and dominated the last 30 minutes. Not THAT bad.

They’re gassed. Their leaders have been overplayed because of lack of talent and depth.

Tonight was the night to win it, even in OT. But they looked spent.

Garbage. We don't know why any of the decisions are being made. Playewrs should have been called up from Laval but that is not his decision.

...we know they're BAD decisions, or have your eyes stopped working??...in many, if not most, of the games we've pulled out of the fire lately, we've played from behind and like garbage for vast periods of the games...why is Jackeye still sitting while that Stay Puft Marshmallow Man Savard, who's been absolutely horrid, plays??...why isn't Guhle back with Carrier, since that was a VERY successful pairing for us??...why didn't Demidov dress Saturday if he's been in Canada since last Thursday??...why can't Marty adjust his "game plan" when it OBVIOUSLY isn't working game in and game out??...or the use of Time Outs??...or switching up the Shootout when the Normal 3 aren't getting it done lately??...or dozens of other things that he just can't get a grip on when it comes to coaching MEN, not HIS KIDS...the Power of Positivity (unless your Jackeye or Struble) was great when we were at Rock Bottom and starting a rebuild...now we need an actual NHL coach and not a cheerleader...

You guys are brutal...and I get it...Ive been brutal as well but after calming down and being able to think straight, I realize that if we do eventually make the playoffs, it will be something that almost no one thought we would be able to do this year so in the end, we should find some solace that we were almost there this year if we end up not making it. I know...it suck after all the hype and being so close....just one funking win away but maybe we squeezed out all that we had in that winning stretch.

Agree also once Laine shout the previous play should be dead and shouldn’t even be able to be reviewed…
Which is what we’re seeing from posts about the rule regarding this scenario. If true that the play isn’t reviewable, then wtf? These are crucial points, so like how does it seem NHL officiating is so inadequate. They can take all the time they want to check the rule book and get it right according to the rules in that scenario. That’s literally their job.

I would be totally fine with missing the playoffs if they looked like they were even trying to make it

...Demidov should have shot and the goal should count...it's in, amigo; is THAT how we wanted to make the Playoffs, on a Ref screwup on a good goal??...

Depth is the easiest to refill. If Demidov Hutson, Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky can show they are able to get Montreal to the dance, next step is to help them out with proven talent.

Making the playoffs with a -22 goal differential is insane. Even if we make it, the team is out of gas, I don't see us lasting long. Maybe Dobes could have his Halak moment but they're going to use Montembeault until we're eliminated so probably not.
I dont blame Monty. I think he has been ok tonight but yeah Dobes is realy good too. I understand people who want the big guy on the net.

Also, if two teams are tied for 8th in points after 82 games they should have a 1 game playoff. If there’s 3 or more teams then the tie breaker should be used to get it down to 2 teams who then battle it out head to head one game.

Oh come on...you dont think they are trying ? For Real? I think they are actually trying too hard....they are choking under pressure because they lack experience in these situations and it shows! They are getting their chances but it seems like they are holding their sticks to hard.

Great post and I will add that this team, especially the most used players are banged up. You can see it in the play of several vets.

There's a serious lack of depth on this team, especially at forward & D.

We're running Matheson-Carrier as a #1 D pair, which they're not.

Depth scoring has been an issue all year. We rely on Suzuki & Hutson to create everything, although at least it looks like Demidov will help there, but still need more talent on this team, especially in the middle 6.
