HF Habs: Habs Goalie situation

nothing, roll with what you have, they knew it was going to be another rough year, got to stick with the plan imo.
I agree, though with our depth if monty or primeau interested a team I'd listen, because worse case scenario it just helps the tank and you get to reward/challenge someone like Dobes with backup duty. All depends on what's being offered.

Fowler and Dobes in Laval by end of year. Hughes called up. Give him a look.
My guess is that Hughes realizes that MSL has lost all trust in Primeau and that something will happen soon. If I was to guess...Dobes gets a shot. He played 50 games last year and had earned an opportunity.

I agree that we should try Hughes and leave dobes to finish up the year with laval with the idea of bringing in dobes next year. Obviously primeau is gone unfortunately. I think maybe his problem is mental. Maybe he's nervous or unconfident. It's a tough league and you need a strong mentality. Not everyone has that. Hughes seems to be a good goalie and is old enough to know whats what. We've got nothing to lose. He's probably better than the two we have to be honest. And hey he might just surprise us. I like him. I've always liked dobes and fowler seems outstanding. As I said though for a goalie mental fortitude is imparative.

Somethings gotta give.

Right now Monty is our clear #1. Dobes has been a mid backup with flashes of #1 potential.

Primeau has been lights out in Laval after a rough start with the Habs and certainly could be a #2 in the NHL. Goalies take time (see Charlie Lindgren)

Fowler is now signed and is our presumptive future #1.

Next year we should start.....

Monty
Dobes

Primeau
Fowler

In this scenario Fowler needs to be playing at least a 40-50% split in Laval. If Primeau is a #2 in Laval it is a waste of his talent, and we might as well trade him.

Another option is we have a 50/50 split in Laval with Fowler/Dobes and let them fight it out for the future hierarchy.

Assuming Fowler is the man. He could assert himself as early as Jan 31 next year. He could make it impossible to not call him up. If we do that.......Primeau has to go. Again.....a wasted asset.

So how do you guys see it playing out?

Do we go with the ....... Monty/Dobes and Primeau/Fowler.........or Monty/Primeau and Dobes/Fowler?

One of Primeau/Dobes could be traded for all we know.
Who makes the NHL next year will be decided during camp, but Primeau needs to pass waivers, Dobes won't.

Primeau is way too strong for the AHL now that he gets to play constantly. His problems were 100% mental this season, and probably similar what Dobes is experiencing right now, both caused by not playing often enough because Marty love to ride 1 goalie as if the league was still 40 games long...

I think we keep all 4 for next season personally.

Yes of course we can voluntarily squander assets and hope for pathetic management.

They should qualify him and see what's what afterwards.
did I said they SHOULD do that? this is an option not in the OP's message

No issues with that, but a favor for what? Do you mean for future considerations? I think we can get better, he's a pretty damn good AHL goaltender no?
Not for future consideration but to an organization that has meaning for him and where there is room for him. He did this with Petry and DeSmith.

Damn right no favors...you package him up and get a solid return
Yep, worst case scenario I'm thinking is we qualify Primeau, he goes to arbitration, wins, team picks a 1 year contract, then he needs to fight Dobes for the backup position beginning of next season. If he wins: Dobes is waiver exempt, if he loses we waive his arse...

I don't see any problems doing this vs just letting him go now for nothing.

I assume Dobes and Primeau will fight it out next camp, winner stays up.

Alternatively, trade one of them this summer and re-sign Hughes or get another vet goalie.

I would assume we are going to move on from Primeau. If we can trade him for a pick/prospect great, but if we can't then let him walk and wish him the best of luck. Yes he still has a chance of figuring things out and becoming a decent NHL goalie, but we just aren't in a place to give him the minutes he'll need to get there and it would be petty of us to hold him back.

again i hate how this organization handles prospects at times, I just would not have called up Dobes as he is just a 2nd year pro, he needs to play a ton imo so having him in the NHL as a backup is not how I would want to see him developed. It doesn't mean he won't be fine, just would rather they not rush these kids and slow cook them more.

For next year I assume the idea is Monty NHL starter, Fowler AHL starter. Dobes can backup either as he and Primeau can fight it out at camp, winner backups up Monty, loser backs up Fowler.

With Dobes exempt through 2026-27 or until 60 NHL GP, I see no rush to move Primeau or Dobes unless we get a decent offer. One of them likely gets moved at some point in next 7-8 months

Fowler will be the goalie to bring us playoff success. We'll need a veteran to back him up. (we don't have said veteran yet).

I would play Dobes against Canes. He's been outstanding last two games. He may be our last straw
