Post-Game Talk: Habs defeat the Panthers in OT

I don't participate in the GDT for two reasons.

1) I want to watch the whole game and if I'm busy typing or reading some bullshit I know I'll miss some action
2) The GDT is where Hab fans get lost in the dark side. I'd rather the force be with me and my team.
I rarely participate in GDTs for this very reason

It’s a sideshow that takes over the show.

People here are so hard with Montembeault. 2 deflected goals by his own team players and he's under average goalie.

He is an average goalie that has been exposed with the fact that he isn't good with shots from distance. Even the ones he saves creates rebounds and second chance opportunities. He's got learned helplessness with screens, he doesn't fight nearly hard enough to get sight lines through traffic.

The two goals against were deflected, yes, but they were both deflected into the same area of the net the initial shot was looking to take it. Guessing and sliding to the wrong side of the net is not good goaltending. The first goal in particular, if he doesn't guess, he's easily able to corral that bounce.

To be fair, he did have a bad game last night. I agree he gets way too much piled on (and it's only gonna get worse with his contract kicking in next year) but Marty even sat him for a shift in the 3rd for Newhook.
It’ll only get worse if he doesn’t get better. And if he doesn’t get better there’s no reason why his performances shouldn’t be criticised.

He will get better though. He has all the tools and reasons to.

Most know, Monty played a good game last night.
All he has to do is be good, and steady, and the boys can score 3-4 goals almost every night.
There was nothing Monty could do on those goals last night......he has his tough moments, but the last two games he has been good.

I know you said you played goalie, but this is utter nonsense.

It's not though. Monty doesn’t react well to long shots, he anticipates. In those instances, it burned him.
He's good in high danger shots so it might that team doesn't do a good job covering net front or clearing traffic. It is true he's in bottom of the league for that metric. Basu and Godin pod talked about it

He doesn't fight through screens. He just accepts them and guesses. Watch the top netminders, they are always peeking and fighting through traffic to see the puck. Monty's battle level on sight lines is non-existent.

I'm not talking about the long shots. I agree with him on that. It's the nonsense that he shouldn't have anticipated where the shot was going and should have stayed where he was. I'll bet on other occasions when he doesn't move and the shot is not deflected he'll complain that Monty can't follow the puck. The puck was seriously deflected on both goals. Nothing he could do about it.

You are more knowledgeable than me on the matter. Is this somewhat innate and/or staff has been focusing on that and he's not assimilating/applying it?

I'm not really a goaltending expert, but it seems like he is overplaying those longer shots. He ends up sliding out of the net. I noticed that it happened a couple other times last night in addition to the goals against where the shot comes and he slides to make the save and ends up way out of position compared to the origin of the shot. Guarding the post. It feels like it is him trying to be so sure on the original that it leaves him swimming if "something else" happens.

That said, I really don't have too many complaints about Monty. He is battling and keeping us in there. I share some of the nerves about overworking him, but it is the reality at this point.

From what I've heard is that they are working with him on that. Essentially it takes time to integrate something like that into your game full time. When you get fatigued especially, you start relying on instincts and reflexes, so things like this that aren't fully ingrained yet will fall away the deeper into the game you get.. or in Monty's case, the fatigue he has from playing way too many games in the past few weeks.

He certainly knows it's a problem in his game and he's guessing on shots that he isn't getting full sight lines to the puck. That's why he got caught out on those deflections when they were still going the same side of the net as the original shot and why you saw a few other occassions where the puck hit the traffic in front while he slid to the wrong location of the shot.

The criticism is over the top. That first goal is just bad luck. He’s moving in the direction of the shot and it takes a weird deflection off a Hab player. Then everyone starts screaming at him. It’s dumb.
