Gustavsson on IR

I thought the tests they ran said it was all just precautionary and that he was fine? Doesn't seem like that's the case now, right? Man, hope he's okay, regardless of what it means to his hockey career.

Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced today, February 1, that the club has placed goaltender Jonas Gustavsson on injured reserve and recalled goaltender Malcolm Subban from the Providence Bruins on an emergency basis. Sweeney also announced that the team has recalled forward David Pastrnak from Providence. Subban and Pastrnak will join the Bruins for Monday's practice at TD Garden at 2:00 p.m.

"We placed Jonas on Injured Reserve as we await his final test results," said Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney. "Pending those final test results, he will be cleared for full participation by our medical staff."

Since IR can be done retroactively, is there any financial benefit to placing him on it at this point, even if it only goes for a few days beyond the week minimum?

Hoping for the best for Jonas, praying Subban doesn't get a second of ice time. Another failed Chiarelli pick.

That's why you never waste a high pick on a goalie. Just another glaring example of the arrogance PC brought to the table, while the team is left holding the bag for it.

Who did you wanted with the pick then?
List 5 players taken after Subban that you would rather have now?

There are way more than 5 now that hindsight is 20/20. I see your point though. Nothing much to chose from given the weak draft.
But
Vesey
Severson
Mccabe
Esa lindell
Shane gostisbehere
Andreas athanasiou
Conor hellebucyk

All preferred over subban

Even knowing what we know now, the pickings would be slim:

Tanner Pearson
Jimmy Vesey (who we might get anyway)
Shayne Gostisbehere
Damon Severson

I liked the pick when we made it because I thought Subban represented the best value on the board and could be a trade chip down the road if we didn't keep him.

I still like the pick to be fair.

Wish Tom Wilson, Scott Laughton or Olli Maatta had fallen though.

Hope The Monster is OK though, I've really liked him as a backup, he's the kind of guy I'd keep to stay behind Rask so long as he's healthy.

The guy I was hoping for when the B's came to the mic was Brady Skjei...no superstar as of yet, but I thought he was best on the board. I wasn't expecting Subban but wasn't dissatisfied with the selection at the time. Thought Brady was the bigger need.

Hi there.

Still doesn't change the fact that he was a high pick...

Doesn't change the fact that it's an adage in hockey that you don't take a goalie with a pick, even if there are exceptions. It's like when you talk about goalie trade value and how the return is usually pretty low for them in trade, and then someone inevitably brings up Patrick Roy. Sure. Sometimes it happens. Just like sometimes teams take a goalie with a high pick. It's just that goalie development and how they'll progress is hard to really gauge. That's it. And it's not my view. It's the league, in general.

Oh I wasn't arguing this sentiment at all. Just the post I quoted, the other poster seemed like he was trying to argue the fact that Tuukka was a high pick.

Personally I was quite unhappy that Chia drafted Subban where he did. Unless I'm looking at a Roy, or a prospect on the same level, I'm steering clear of a netminder in round 1.

subban has been awesome since thanksgiving. hope the bruins let him start a game, hey, why not tomorrow? he's either gonna be the backup next year or they're trading him, may as well get a look at what he can do.

I could see Rask playing every game until the Wild game, have whoever is the backup play that one and then Rask again against Detroit the day after. A day's rest between every game until that point, and even two between Buffalo and LA (both at home).

Obviously a Toronto or Buffalo game would've been backup type games, but I don't see Tuukka not starting after the break. Maybe one of the Buffalo games.

Yeah, before the ASG when Jonas was taken off the ice, I counted 6 games for a backup: one Buffalo game, 2 of the Disneys, and one each from the 3 March back-to-backs. The Buffalo game is a weak call; there's no particular reason a healthy Rask can't do the next five, or even six, if need be.

The danger is if Rask goes cold, then we need a backup plan, which would be...a backup. If he loses the next four and looks terrible, a backup in WPG would be nice. He got a slow start in October; let's home the same doesn't happen now. It's a shorter break, so it shouldn't, but...

As far as Subban, I have no problem with him yet. He's 22. He's a goalie. Let's see. I don't mind him even getting a "non-backup" stint like he got last year, even if it's just to hang out with the team and check in with the big club. He doesn't need to be traded ASAP or anything foolish like that - he could be good. Remember that mistake Toronto made with a young goalie they didn't think was going to work out?

That said, I don't want him actually on the ice in a spoked B. Not this year. Probably not next year. (I'd love Goose back next year.) The only exception would be to pull Rask during a 5-0 loss, or something like that. I mean, in an emergency, yea, Subban's gotta be the next one up - but it would also mean we'd have to press Rask until we have a playoff spot.

I agree with you mostly, so bear with me. I'm going to arbitrarily use Corey Schneider as a comparison based on draft position, but at his point their developments, they aren't far off. In draft + 4 Subban is on his second stint on the roster, with 1+ period of NHL activity. In draft + 4 Scheinder had 1 pretty unremarkable stint in the NHL. Goalies take time. Was it arrogant and short sighted that Chiarelli went BPA and took a goalie in the 2012 draft? Yep. But that doesn't mean the asset is worthless now. There is still plenty of time for Subban to prove useful to this team, due to trade or actual play on the team. I won't be pulling my hairs out if he gets an NHL start, in fact, I'm kind of hoping for it.
