Anyone making a line up with Lintuniemi, Clague or MacDermid on the Kings next year might as well do it over. It's not gonna happen. I'm about 95% sure Lintuniemi will not be qualified and be moving on. MacDermid will clear waivers and spend his final season on an NHL contract in Ontario. Clague is a year or two out, no where near ready defensively to play in the NHL. Roy and Walker are both far ahead of Clague. Strand is someone to watch for in a couple of years, at least has some potential. Kings need to sign Phillips by June 1st this year (not worried, should be a done deal this spring) or lose his rights. Not sure if Anderson or Hults want to come out of college yet. One more season physically maturing won't hurt. Brickley will get a shot at the Kings roster but there are concerns. Moverare sounds like he will stay in the SHL for one more season. Durzi will be trying to make the Reign next year. Reddekopp will never play in the NHL, he shouldn't even be in the AHL, he's an ECHL player that is not helping Cal Petersen's growing ulcer (he made 52 saves today). Reality check.

Alright

Iafallo-Kopi-Brown
Toff-Carter-Leipsic
Grundstrum-Kempe-Wagner
Lewis-Amadio-Clifford
Luff

DD8-Forbort
AMart-Fantenberg
Walker-Dion
LaDue?

I think they need to consider signing Fanta to a 2 year deal, he's cheap and not horrible.
I think Leipsic may have earned a contract, he adds a different element than the other forwards.
I'm not confident LaDue will be there, but what ever.
I think Kovi could be dealt, but I'm fine with him staying.
I don't like Kopitar
The team plays better without Carter, but logic never really seems like it's part of the team building process.
Looking at this induces a little acid reflux, so load up on some Tums

Bingo. And Blake will piss off the tankers by signing 1-2 veteran UFA D on bridge deals.

Iafallo--Kopitar--Brown
Kovy--Kempe--Porkins
Grundstrum--Kupari--Brodzinski
Wagner--Amadio--Luff
Clifford

Forbort--Doughty
Trade (Toffoli)--Cernak (Martinez trade)
Phanuef--Walker
LaDue

Petersen
Campbell

HM/Last cuts: Scherbak, JAD, Vilardi, Clague

Carter, Lewis and Quick will be gone in the offseason. Martinez and Toffoli at the deadline (someone will over pay for Toffoli).

Martinez to Tampa for Cernak + 3rd + cap dump
Toffoli for a young NHL LHD...1 for 1

I called Wagner as the Dark horse player to make the team last offseason (this year). This coming offseason (next year's team), I'm gonna say...Matt Roy

P.s. I hope we sign some college free agents like Bobo Carpenter (Boston University) and Nico Sturm (Clarkson University, Rempal teammate).
Brodz will be a UFA like Gravel. Not enough NHL games played.

I’m coming around on Fantenberg. If there are no upgrades coming then they might as well re-sign him.

I’m still hoping a bit more youth will have good camps.

Leipsic has been good but I do think LA will give Kupari and JAD chances next year to earn spots. Leipsic May be an odd man out.

Lineup just seems more of the same. I think they will being pushing hard to move Carter.

I'm really getting tired of Iafallo on the top line. He's just not good enough. He should have to battle for a roster spot next year.

Exactly what is your problem with Iafallo dressed as a King? What is it that you've seen him fail to do that other wingers on the Kings have done better for him to battle for a roster spot?

Personally, it wouldn’t upset me one bit.

He will sign a guy that is likely suited to be a bottom pairing defensman but will need to play some top 4 minutes during next season.

The potential UFA defense class does not look too strong minus Karlsson.

Guys like Coburn or Gunnerson could be options.

I think the sooner a rebuild starts, the better. You don’t want to end up like Detroit, who have some good young forwards and prospects, but are stuck with bad contracts for older useless players. So they can’t make moves to acquire high end talent or be in better draft positions.

My hope is the following players are gone by September, with only futures in return.

Kovalchuk
Carter
Hagelin
Lewis
Forbort
Phaneuf bought out

That leaves you with a top six forwards and top four D looking like

Kopitar/ Brown / ?
Kempe / Toffoli / ?

Doughty / ?
Martinez / ?

Quick / ?

That’s around $44m in cap hit, so just over 50% of next years projected $82m ceiling, assuming Kempe gets a raise to like $2.5m.

I think you sign a ufa to cover one of those open spots. If you could sign Jake Gardiner or maybe Tyler Myers, I think that improves things. Options at wing are available, and maybe Micheal Ferland wants to play in LA, or even Wayne Simmonds. So now let’s say the picture looks something like:

Kopitar/ Brown / Ferland $7m
Kempe / Toffoli / ?

Doughty / Gardiner $6m
Martinez / ?

Quick / ?

Cap hit is around $61m with buyout hits from Richards and Phaneuf, leaving around $20m left to cover 7 + 2 forwards, 3 + 1 defenseman, and 1 goalie. So 14 players. And we have several roster players under contract who fill in those spots.

Clifford
Wagner
LaDue
Walker
Campbell

These guys cost just under $4m, and leave us with 7 forwards and 2 defenseman to fill out with $16m in cap space for 9 players. Let’s look at our free agents who remain, that we retain with small raises.

Iafallo $2m
Amadio $1m
Leipsec $750k
Fantenberg ufa $1m

Totals up to be around $5m, leaving $11m to fill out 4 forwards and 1 defenseman. Here is what our roster looks like. This is more depth chart than line combos and D pairings.

Kopitar/ Brown / Ferland
Kempe / Toffoli / Iafallo
Amadio / Leipsec / Wagner
Clifford / ? / ?
? / ?

Doughty / Gardiner
Martinez / Walker
LaDue / Fantenberg
?

Quick / Campbell

To finish out the spots,it makes sense to look at prospects in the org now. Of course the hope is you somehow get a roster prospect either in the draft or via one of the trades to improve this list. Here’s how I would round things out. This would leave around $5m in free cap.

Kopitar/ Brown / Ferland
Kempe / Toffoli / Iafallo
Amadio / Leipsec / Wagner
Clifford / Luff / Grundstrom
Kupari / Rempal

Doughty / Gardiner
Martinez / Walker
LaDue / Fantenberg
Roy

Quick / Campbell

The guys in bold are who you’d love to upgrade with a homerun prospect in draft / trade. Just hire Joel Queville as a coach, Rikard Gronberg and Marco Sturm as assistants and you’re ready to rock with a whole new outlook.

Good post.

A top 6 of Kopitar, Brown, Iafallo, Kempe, Toffoli and Ferland with that defense should set the team up nicely for another high draft pick as well.

Kopitar will be a top 6 fixture for as long as he’s here, but all those players (minus TT) would also slide nicely into complimentary roles once the Kings draft and develop more legit top 6 options like Kupari, whoever we get this year and hopefully Vilardi.

Curious who LA protects in the Seattle Expansion draft? When is it?

Only Kopitar and DD8 have NTC, or am I missing people?

Drew will have an NMC at the expansion, Kopi will have an NTC so technically Kopi wouldn't be required to be protected, but I have a hard time thinking he wouldn't. I just think its too early to be thinking about Expansion right now. I'd say only Doughty, Kopi and Brown are the only players who are expected to be on this team by them. The team will look extremely different from now especially when we are open for business

Kovalchuk and Phaneuf technically have NMCs, but their contracts experience before the expansion draft.

Who knows. In three years, we will probably end up leaving Kopitar unprotected.

I would say that's probably unlikely in a hard cap league. Just too old, too much cap, and too many years left. Does anyone need 2019 Kovalchuk or Carter?

The Kings pretty much are the Wings. That was sort of baked in the cake the day Quick got his 10 year deal though.

The only reason to protect a soon to be 34 year old with a $10m hit is because you either don't have anyone else worth protecting, and/or you don't need to protect enough other guys to meet minimum requirements. If Seattle wants him, go for it. I don't think they'll be that dumb though. No reason to start a franchise like that. They'll sell plenty of tickets in the early years.

I think the amount of retained salary completely depends on the quality of returns. In order to save face and not retain any money, I would accept a low pick and older prospect.

In finding trade partners for those two, I would target playoff teams and those on the bubble, with cap space.

Arizona
Chicago
Colorado
Columbus
Montreal
Nashville
NYI
Philadelphia
Vancouver
Winnipeg

Cap friendly lists a bunch of additional playoff type teams with enough deadline cap space to fit either one of Carter or Kovy, but I’m not sure how that works.

Blake must really regret not moving Carter in the summer of 2017. We'd be free of that contract and have a couple of nice pieces to add to the pipeline or NHL roster.

They were troting him out at events like he was a core piece. God that was bad.

For sheets and giggles:

Kovalchuk Hughes Panarin
Iaffalo Kopitar Brown
Grundstrom Kempe Toffoli
Luff Amadio Wagner
Clifford/Lewis
