Per ESPN:
Bill Guerin, who played 18 years in the NHL for eight teams, said on Fox News that Trump's presence would give a boost to the rivalry between the North American hockey powers. He credited Trump's tariff threats and talk of making Canada the 51st U.S. state with ratcheting up the intensity in their fight-filled matchup in the preliminary round.

"We would love it if President Trump was in attendance," Guerin said in the interview broadcast Monday. "We have a room full of proud American players and coaches and staff. Listen, we're just trying to represent our country the best way we can."

So many in the American hockey community seem not to get it. What proportion of this team is openly in favor of Canada's annexation? Will any of them who aren't speak out in light of this? How would we feel if, in back in 2022 before the (second) invasion began, the Russian national team GM were to point out how excited they were that the threat of invasion had ratcheted up tensions between Russian and Ukrainian teams? Preposterous, offensive, and frightening.

True as that may be, this is an important issue that deserves to be aired where possible. I hear you and understand this is a hockey forum, but the intersection of sports and politics is often a space of potentially powerful influence and it should be discussed.

Oh don't get me wrong, I have my opinions as well, but I get in trouble here.

Most people will be outraged by this. Because most people are outraged 24/7 these days
You're from Montreal, and you don't think inviting the man who has continually threatened your sovereignty for the past month to the event because "they're proud Americans" is deserving of some outrage?

False dichotomy.
Actually no, it's not. It's the exact same behavior. We'll see if there is follow through.
