Guelph Storm 2024 25 Season Thread Part I

I would disagree, we are getting pushed around by much bigger teams. We don't stand a chance against London and Kitchener Dmen. Most are quite big. I agree with your point about skill, but would like to see size too.
I agree on the need for size. I’m a little leery on Warren as a pick given what I’ve read on various threads. I’ve heard the words selfish, attitude problems and teammate issues thrown around - maybe that’s why his projection has dropped. Not sure what to believe but I think we’re still stinging from the last time we had a first overall pick in 2016, and took a guy that was rated very highly because of skill, especially as a defenseman . We found out pretty quickly that he was missing some key attributes that were not remediated by skill alone.

Don't remind me of that player either!

With 2nd overall I'm having flashbacks to the last player we took at that position, I think this time around will be better.... excited for tonight and hopeful for the future.

Yes - that was another one picked on word of mouth, legacy and a favour to a former hometown favourite. I hope we’re done with that as well.

I honestly think we made a mistake by not picking Wycik’s teammate Lappalainen. A good goal scorer, supposedly plays with an edge and would have instant chemistry. I think Flint got a steal in the 3rd round.

I’ll be keeping my eye on him relative to the players we took instead of him before that.

Flint also got Beauchesne’s brother in the 5th when rated a late second rounder. Again Guelph had a couple of opportunities to draft him.

The knock on Lappalainen that I was reading is that he's not a 200-foot player/potentially irresponsible in his own end. I wouldn't pick him just because he's a teammate, I'm sure Wycisk's skill will elevate his wingers regardless. Stevens, our steal of last year's second round, would look good on his wing. I love that they took this Pape kid in the second, and Burnett says he'll report. The fact that he played as many games as an OHL player last season, put up those points, and apparently is not afraid of the dirty areas is huge.

Gotta think they took Reznik late in the third because he was a top rated goalie and still available. This is the benefit of all the early picks. Competition in net is never a bad thing, and I'm confident we have some young stars in that position... meaning they play for the spots and also become good assets for trade/go for it.

James Roy in the 7th round also looks interesting. A righty, and put up 66 points in 32 games.

Overall I'm happy with the selections and looking to the future. Can't wait for camp in the fall.

I understand what you are saying as I was also expecting Lappalainen and Beauchense.

However reviewing some of the analysis it is hard to argue with most of the picks.

Obviously the plan was to draft size, goal scoring, play making, take some flyers and improve overall depth incl goaltending.

All the boxes were checked with arguably adding the top forward, goaltender and above average defense with Sullivan and Martin.

My biggest concern was Pape at 25 but he looks like the goal scorer we badly needed and highly ranked.
