GTHL investigating improper sales of teams

Sigh.... yup.

As if this matters to absolutely anyone, as if it actually impacts anyone, in any meaningful manner.

But it's the GTHL, and the GTHL is the resident poster boy for "hockey is bad", so here we are.
"Some organizations that purportedly are non-profits are being inappropriately bought and sold, MacInnis said, adding that side deals in which parents “buy” the right to control a team for a season, deciding on hiring or retaining coaches and even how much ice time players should receive, have become commonplace."

... ya... seems legit....

This has been the case since time imemorial, and to every single person who actually has been around the game, and it's not going anywhere. Moreover, it happens in every sport from hockey to baseball to tennis to football.

It's minor hockey, FFS.

MINOR. HOCKEY.

Why on earth does a major mainstream outlet give a crap about a league that literally caters to child hockey players in one geographic area? Or perhaps a better question is, if it wasn't for Akim Aliu, would this be a story?

The answer is no... because unless you preface it with a story that suggests the GTHL is racist, the first question someone says to this is "What the hell is the GTHL?"

Yes.. it's minor hockey, supposedly run by non-profits who it appears are not exactly non-profit. It's dirty. You're right.. it's minor hockey... teams should not be sold for millions

Money talks ! That's the reality . Little Johnny half fast has parents who can assure his ice time over a player with more athleticism and talent, but lacking financial support. AA & AAA programs are for affluent families. Lower and middle income types need not apply.

Even more true in Detroit, Buffalo in my experience; and St. Louis, New Jersey I suspect.

As the father of a Ranger player told me at practice quite a few years back triple A is not a blue colour sport. They moved from a lower populated area to the GTA to have their son play in that league. The next Gretzky could be practicing on a back yard rink some where but if the parents don't have the finance needed to play at a higher level this kid never gets a sniff. Also he might not be welcomed into the clique in the first place.

Seems to me that one guy was buying up GTA teams and then changing their colours and logos. It turned out that he ran a sporting goods business and just happened to have equipment (sweaters, pants, helmets, etc.) in the new colours. Whoda thunk it?

It's unbelievable that Hockey Canada, and all these leagues have so much bureaucracy regulating hockey down to even the house league level, but that's it's become so blatantly corrupted and rigged at it's highest levels.

these GTA "super teams" are destroying minor hockey in Canada while a select few benefit.

I don't say that about the US system. And i don't support class-based hockey minor hockey. We've priced a lot of natural talent out of the sport.

If you have have an argument to make that super teams and families buying their way into programs is good for minor hockey, I'm listening.

Super teams should not automatically mean people buying spots. I am not against the idea of super teams, or AAAA if you will, just against the way it's being implemented in Ontario.

are you suggesting that it only happens in the gthl?

most of the time its the opposite, its one dad who is paying for all the players to play. this year the super team that i know dad could play on any team in ontario, and hes playing a whack of money.

Certainly not, I'm just not of the belief corruption, dirty politics, and super teams benefit minor hockey and player dev. I'm still open to points to the contrary!
