-changing Demko's workload
-Ian Clark's resume includes Luongo and Bobrovsky never taking a day off and both are/will be Hall-of-Famers and Demko has the same talent and drive
-teams are starting to say they can't ride their goalies this hard anymore
-likens this to the change in pitching in MLB
-no one's playing 75 games anymore
-Demko is at the flashpoint of this change
-no more practicing as much
-each team gets 4 days off a month and wonders if goalies will get more days off
-Bukauskas brings up the "reverse-v" goalie style that puts a lot of torque on the knee and how there's going to be a change away from this style

Hoglander:
-was really surprised at this signing
-two sides started talking in the summer but put it aside
-he showed up to training camp in great shape and Canucks re-start talks
-sends a message to the rest of the young kids what happens when you are committed
-Hoglander really wants to stay in Vancouver; even when he was sent to Abbotsford didn't want to leave the organization
-signing now gives him a forward spot rather than get squeezed out
-contract would have been higher if he gave up UFA years
-Sedins twins spent a lot of time helping Hoglander in Abbotsford
-very humble kid
-told his agent to get the deal done

Boeser:
-doesn't think the Verhaeghe contract is a comparison; would be 7.7m with a market with state tax
-keeping Boeser is ideal
-if Boeser keeps scoring the number starts with an 8
-not hearing of any negotiations
-Canucks decided not to talk extension during the summer
-thinks he will eventually extend

Lafreniere:
-Boeser's agent will use Lafreniere's next contract as a comparison
-Canucks were after him when Allvin first got here
-Castonguay was his agent

Goaltending:
-people that were praising Silovs during the playoffs need to show patience with him now
-Lankinen's agent called the Canucks on July 1st
-Lankinen has a history with Torenius from Finland and worked together 2-3 times a week this summer
-Demko is working out daily with Joshua

Joshua:
-is doing whatever it takes to get healthy but it's a process
-getting his cardio up to NHL levels is not going to be easy
-arrived to Vancouver in game-shape in early August
-had surgery after arriving
-couldn't work out for a couple of weeks
-probably around 3 more weeks away

Defence:
-a lot of people reached out to Dhaliwal when the Canucks signed Desharnais to 2m questioning the signing
-Tocchet has said he could sit some games and be in a rotation with Juulsen
-right-side third pair may be one of the improvements the Canucks have to make at the deadline

Targeting size on the backend while simultaneously wanting dmen to be able to move the puck (and quickly) seems like a mistake atm.

Going to be very curious to see how they adjust/pivot.

I’m more puzzled as to why we resigned a soon to be 34 year old Myers to another 3 year contract.

Just an overall bad decision. His NMC + contract length guarantees us no flexibility.

Lack of trade assets and the cost of big veteran defence ended up being crazy high this summer (ex1: Edmundson ex2: Dillon ex3: Lyubushkin).

It's too bad we couldn't get Steve Yzerman to pay us a 2nd round pick to take on Jake Walman for 2 years at 3.4MM instead, and then use that 2nd as part of dumping Mikeyev, and still have our 2nd as an asset to improve another area.

A 2027 2nd has no value right now.

The market rate for aging #4/#5 defenseman this summer was ridiculous.

Allvin and JR have done a decent job at stop-gap options but the cold truth is there is no rectifying so many years of poor drafting and development. Our inability to draft a good defenseman outside of Hughes between 2017-2021 is f***ing us now.

Vegas is able to churn out a decent defensive unit by relying on a stream of cheap young players they drafted or signed: Korczak, Hague and Whitecloud.

Yeah we need to acknowledge that they are still managing this team with handicaps from the previous group, even 3 years later.

Relevant to having three goalies on the roster in regards to Demko. Doesn't help this year but may facilitate a change in the goalie position.

Looking like they had the right read on Lafreniere when he was struggling a couple years ago.
There were a number of posters who said at the time he was only worth a 2nd or 3rd.

Hell, him and Kakko were almost the equivalent in value.

But he’s showing why he was drafted #1.

And good for him.

And good for the Rags for sticking with him and putting him a position to succeed.

Because the right-side is already a clown show and they couldn't afford an upgrade.

I think its pretty obvious that this management and coaching staff think they can get by with big and touch, cheap, bottom four defense because of the defensive structure that Foote and Tochett have implement. And I think that this is obviously true to a degree, and I'd expect Forbort and Desharnais to improve as they learn the system.

With that said, there are two potential issues with this philosophy:
  1. It probably isn't going to work very well with below average goaltending, and we may get below average goaltending if Demko is out for any significant period of time; and
  2. Tocchett has recognized that their defensive structure (which theoretically allows bad defensemen to get better results) was stifling their offense too much, and we certainly saw this as last season progressed, and as a result, Tochett seemed to identified that at the end of the year and intended to re-jig the defensive structure to encourage a better transition game. The problem is, I don't know if Forbort and Desharnais, or frankly, even Myers, are going to do well when they need to make better and more risky outlet passes out of the zone. So they may improve the offense, but their defensive strucutre may implode.

Side bar: does anyone know how Grub's doing?

Sorry if the question is too...blunt.

Is...that something our team should explore? Maybe TDL? Can we afford to?

1) Grub hasn't posted or logged in since his farewell post.

2) Maybe? He's on a 2y/3m contract but can't crack the Leaf's poorly constructed defence. His value is very low and is a free agent at the end of his contract.

It also doesn’t help that Silovs seems to struggle most with the long range, low danger shots against that Tocchet’s system tries to encourage.

1) Hope he'll be OK, recently at our rehab center we've had quite a few patients whose cancer affected their spinal cord and mobility...

2) You think if the trade price is right this can potentially be a good move? I have not watched him play but it seems like his career has been hindered by injury, and his numbers on paper looks decent.

I make a point of not watching the Leafs and even when they are on, he's barely playing. So I don't really have an opinion on him. His trade value should be low and the contract they gave him in the off-season was a surprise.

Media now suggesting if Demko comes back mostly because of the lack of progress reports.
Skating doesn't mean hockey levels.

Definitely a concern so far.

The defence looked extremely vulnerable and slow.

Wow! I knew Canucks fans were kind of bummed out by the opener....but some of the media pundits are spraining their ankles jumping off the Canuck bandwagon.

Brian Hayes on TSN claiming that the Canucks start against the Flames; was actually more 'disappointing' the the Oilers beat-down at the hands of the Jets. His rationale? The Flames are a lousy team and the Jets aren't.

And Steve Simonds on a early season podcast claiming the Canucks are his clear 'overrated team' in the entire Western Conference. And more than a few sites have them rated anywhere from 6th to even 10th in the Conference.

Should definitely be 'bulletin board' material for this Canucks team.
