Rumour is they are ready to move on from Rossi. (possibly because it would hard to sign him)

Minny has a great prospect pool. Riley Heidt, Danila Yurov, Liam Ohgren(ex teammate of Lekkerimaki), Rasmus Kumpulainen, 6'3" Charlie Stramel (RHC) is coming alive this year. Speed, skill, size from pretty well all those forwards. Everyone of those forwards projects to be better than Raty.

Cap would take some real juggling and Van would probably have to take Trenin back at least.
Their gm shutdown the Rossi trade talk and said they are looking to sign him to extension! They are in 2nd place and all their players have Nov or nmc! Russian players like trenin are off limits as well due to their Russian superstar. They literally have negative cap

I can't help but feel the season is over. Best case scenario is 1st round fodder.
  • Hronek is recovering from 2 significant injuries at the same time.
  • Demko needs more time to get back into form (if he ever does).
  • Joshua will come back but I wouldn't expect too much from him this season.
  • Hughes should just recover from his hand injury.
  • Brock had a concussion and a blood clot. No real idea how that has/is affected/ing him.
  • EP/Miller feud and injuries have basically neutered both of them.

What would be the motivation to trade for a guy playing the 4 nations? If he gets injured it the GM will look bad.

I apologize to JR and Allvin, they are actually 5D chess galaxy brains

1. Trade Miller to New Jersey
2. Quinn Hughes will no longer want to sign there when his contract ends because he HATES Miller according to one guy
3. Miller will eventually drive Luke and Jack out of NJ
4. All 3 Hughes in Vancouver
5. Dynasty formed

:sarcasm:

Has anyone checked on Allvin in the kitchen?

I think he left the stove on and now the dinner is starting to burn.

People are reporting there's alot of smoke.

You are right that it's semantics as to what one defines as "contender". But a team that finished 6th overall in the NHL with a plus 56 goal differential, that was within one game of the Western Conference finals, without their franchise goaltender, and who lost to a team that got within one game of the Stanley Cup, is almost certainly a Stanley Cup contender in my books. And in fact, I don't think anyone would have taken you seriously if you suggested the Canucks were not a contender in say, March or April of last year.

I think the Canucks did indeed have some unsustainable play, and certainly peaked too early in the year, but I think they were rightfully seen as a contender last year. And the results are there to back it up.

I don't really think so. Last year they had a good kick at the can, and had Demko not been injured, who knows where they end up? It certainly isn't a stretch to expect that they would have made the Western Conference finals. The story is still ongoing though, and I think we'd both agree that things can change. For example, if the Canucks don't make the playoffs again during Allvin's tenure, then things will look quite a bit different than them making the playoffs 2-3 more times over the next four years or so. And that's even just accepting that they are not going to be a "contender" during those years.

I don't think they ever really had a "choice" to do anything but a compete now! type approach. I think your "longer retool" was never an option. Obviously we will never know, but you must acknowledge that there is a possibility (however likely or not) that ownership was never willing to entertain the type of longer retool you are suggesting. And if that's the case, then the lens through which you are judging them is not reasonable.

Again, I don't think there was a choice.

You are assuming that Allvin had a choice. I think that's inconsistent with what we know of ownership.

The external standard of the quick re-tool is all that matters.

Further, a slower re-tool does not exclude the potential for playoffs either. It just makes it harder to achieve because you can't burn through all future capital to get there. But given that their forwards are primarily UFA supplements, and their defense corps is trash, I have little doubt they could have met this roster composition while building up their base. They chose to be much more aggressive (burned or used the best future capital).

Last year, VAN was lucky to get NSH in round 1, had fallen off since January, had strong 5v5 conversion numbers due to an insanely lucky start, and put up records for the lowest playoff shot totals in NHL history. They were also not even money or favoured vs EDM. A top8-10 team, sure. A legit contender? No, that's rose coloured.

It was a fun ride, but that's all it was, a ride. Not an expectation that they would win it all. If you're the underdog in 3 of 4 potential playoff series, assuming they met DAL and FLA after EDM, you are not a contender. You're punching above your weight class.

Doug MacLean apparently stating Demko is not happy.

This is turning into a gong show.

Because he sucks now?

Yeah it's hard to believe anything that guy says.

But if it's true, I think Demko should worry more about staying healthy and stopping pucks instead first and foremost because he hasn't done much of that in almost a calendar year.

As an oiler fan I have to ask. Is there something in Tocket's coaching style that is causing players to burn out like under Mike Keenen? My understanding is Tock is a player's coach but he is a task master. Obviously the Debrus/Stalker problem is beyond his control. But with the reports today of Demko not being happy. Brock not talking new contract. And then you have the Miller/Pettersson problem. These last 20 games have been trying for the dressing room.

I wonder if Demko is not happy cause he is being pushed first by the Latvian guy you all had to stash on the farm this year and Lankinen who has stepped up his game tis year?

Demko hasn’t been the same since he got back from injury and I still think he’s still injured.

He’s about to be a UFA soon but he’s been too injury prone.
In fairness to Demko, he's missed eight months; he missed training camp; and they're force-feeding him into intense games in the very heart of the NHL season.

He's been set up to fail......and when you combine that with the fact that the Canucks are almost completely inept in their own zone, well its recipe for failure. Even Lankinen has come back down to earth with dull thud.

Demko is still a candidate to be moved in the off-season as he transitions into the final year of his contract. But his trade value is pretty close to zero. But I can't see any way the Canucks offer him a new deal when he's a UFA at the end of 2026-27 season.

With Demko it could be the defense being ass, the lack of scoring support, the loss in confidence in him from management, the locker room drama, Ian Clark no longer being the goalie coach, and/or frustration in his own play/injuries.

Mixed opinions on Tocchet in Vancouver.

Some will say it's on the players because he's now this core's 3rd coach and it's eventually become a mess under all 3. So you have to look at the common denominator.

Others will point to the Canucks' putrid offensive and shot stats / their best forwards underperforming and think his "system" is stifling them. Good coaches get their players going and get the best out of them.

Given the way Demko lobbied for Clark the last time he was almost shown the door, I wouldn’t be surprised if that is a big factor.

You jest, but Myers seems like a pretty solid dude that seems to fill a bit of the Tanev Dad role. I could definitely see JTs antics rubbing him the wrong way.
Still remember this article from earlier this season and perhaps in hindsight it is telling that Pettersson is the one commenting on him.

Yeah he just seems like true Pro. Athletes often get caught up in the lights and never really internalize how fleeting a professional career can be - it's good to have guys like this around (though ideally only playing 16min).

Interesting article.

“Oh a thinker,” he said about the question. He paused a moment, then made note of Myers’ perspective on life.

“Always come to rink and have fun, no matter what happens. You live a good life,” Pettersson said.
Time to have another chat with Myers, Petey.

I'm a little surprised there hasn't been any more talk about Clark since the rumors of him possibly wanting out back in Sept/Oct. I was expecting some of the media to sink their teeth into it more than they did
