You know nothing is available on the market for defensemen when the Canucks apparently have interest in Klingberg. Yikes.

Prices are high right now. We're getting Hronek back and the other guys that struggled early on have now played better under more expectations and deployment.

I say we should see what this group can do now they're healthy and have some games as a unit and team under their belt. Prices will go down and more players will become available as the deadline approaches.

Nothing is going to happen till closer to the TDL.

4 Nations.
Too many teams in the mix.
Not enough cap space.
Inability to meet other teams needs.

So lack of options or sky high prices.

Should have around 4.5m by the time the 4 Nations Tournament starts so cap space won't really be an issue. The rest is right.

I do think we'll start seeing activity around the end of January beginning of February as teams start getting antsy. The big factor will be how they treat the 4 Nations Tournament. If the NHL sends out a quiet memo that they would prefer no trades are made during this time, like in the playoffs, because they want the focus to be on the tournament, then we could see a bunch before and after. Ideally if that happens, then the Canucks can start getting involved. GMs love wallowing in chaos.

We should be turning over every rock we can find, looking for ways to improve the team. That includes due diligence on reclamation projects like Klingberg.

No GM in his right mind is going to give Klingberg a multiyear deal coming off the procedure he had, he's likely looking at a 1 year "prove it" deal for money that can be buried if it doesn't work out.

Klingberg was 31 when he had his surgery (Kane was 35) and if it was successful, he could be an asset that costs nothing.

Prior to injuries taking their toll, he was a legit top pair defender with elite puck moving skills who produced a ton of offense (top 10) at ES and on the PP without being a liability. Very much what we're looking for right now.

The hobbled version people remember from the last few seasons was a mess and if that's what he still is, the experiment will be short lived. I still see no downside to turning over the rock.

The East is pretty open. The West unless someone catches fire it's between Van and Cgy for the last spot.
Van 1 point out, Utah 6 points behind Cgy.
1st wild card Ottawa .536 is 4 points up on 9th place Islanders.

I’ve been assuming there won’t be much movement before the tournament since as a buyer you lose a couple weeks of cap space accrual during the tournament. It’s a bit different jumping early on an acquisition when they can help you for a few extra weeks. Curious to see how it plays out.

I'm talking about teams in general on cap space.

Nucks might have enough space. The other may not to make a deal work for both sides.

Agreed. I was mainly referring to the East where almost everyone is still in the running for a playoff spot.

things could change but right now with the team what it is i expect only longterm moves or short term moves that cost us no meaningful treasure beyond this season. any moves are to get to the playoffs so as to not have this season be a total write off.

i am expecting hockey trades as a way to shuffle the deck, but i would classify klingberg as in our wheelhouse assuming he is after a 1 year deal. i suspect he is washed and doubt he would help us but a different creative look from hughes might help some of our forwards. we definitely have become a one note offence singing quinn's tune and the songsheet does not include ep as a scoring option unless his line makes it happen. he's not going to stand in front of the net and try and screen or deflect hughes' wrist shots.

with the teams as it is, there is absolutely no reason to make any short term moves that cost us any meaningful assets.

Klingberg never was what he appeared to be
In the five seasons prior to the hip injury which began in 19/20 and ultimately resulted in the resurfacing procedure he was a top 10-15 defenseman in the league. Elite offense (both PP and ES) and decent defensively. Even in the hobbled years, the offense was good.

Seriously top 10-15? I find that rather aggressive and yes his offense was phenomenal but he was a very loud player that could be just as detrimental as he was impactful
