Ray and dregs podcast saying how difficult it is for a team to take on $8 million in season.

The main taker for that is Dallas with Seguin being out and Jamie benn being in the final year

those east coast teams are asking for van to take back toxic contracts

Tocchet was great for us last season but I don't think he is that unreplaceable. Yeah a new coach might not run the D system as tight as Tocchet but we'll probably end up with something less offensively stifling.

It's seemingly becoming more likely they won't even have to make the choice, he may just walk in the summer. Again, though, I'd put coaching concerns at least 4th on my list of current Canucks concerns. Well behind the composition of the defense, the attitude of the star players, and the absolutely crap prospect pipeline.

I guess replacing the coach for the infinite time is the easiest and makes it actually look like you're doing something though.

I might puke every night if we have the stare at that man child catfish looking ass Kotkaniemi in a Canucks jersey

lindholm is awful. no deal there

How good is Chytil? Lindholm's low end (now) is probably comparable to his high end.

Agreed. Very unlikely BOS would do full retention on Lindholm. Don't have to make a deal around that then.

The reality of accepting a low return for Miller means the team has to take a chance at 2C. Chytil, Kotkaniemi have better contracts, but have never achieved Lindholm's highs.

Aside: It's weird how people lionize Zadorov here due to a strong playoff performance (and being big). Lindholm had a strong playoffs here too, and he wasn't considered a bottom end player for the majority of his career, like Zadorov.

I think people have a hard time changing habits after a decade of Benning.
A full rebuild? No. A retool is certainly an inevitability.

The team is losing and becoming very boring to watch. It wouldn't be a concern if they were simply unlucky and losing close games. They are getting shelled and thoroughly outplayed in many recent games and the team looks completely broken.

There's credible concerns with regards to this core. Boeser has checked out. Pettersson is ice cold and hasn't looked anywhere close to how he's capable of playing in 11+ months. JT Miller is gone.

The biggest concern is how in the hell do you improve the D? It's essentially Hughes and maybe Hronek and a bunch of guys who flat out suck.

There's literally zero reason for optimism.

This isn't like 2009 where that core endured a trying 8 game losing streak, and were incredibly unfortunate to lose many of those games. This is closer to 2005-2006 when it was clearly time to move on from some guys.

I just want this team to have someone that can put Perry in place Ok.

I think it's because Lindholm has struggled both in Calgary following that stellar season, wasn't great here until the playoffs and hasn't worked out whatsoever in Boston. Whereas Zadorov has seemingly found his stride now, alongside the playoff run with us.

I wouldn't be opposed to Lindholm coming back, but there would need to be retention. Which I can't imagine Boston is interested in.

So one insider says JT will be traded by Feb 1, and another well connected Vancouver-based writer says don't be surprised if JT is still here in the summer. I guess every options are open, or nobody really knows anything.

I'm not even going to bother following this anymore. If/when it happens is when I will pay attention. These "insiders" doesn't seem to know anything more than we do.

its a team option.

I mean he can say, I really don't want to come back, please don't activate the team option and put me through this.

feels like that is leaked to get more teams to bid on Miller.

LeBrun pointed out that Tocchet’s deal includes a mutual option for next season, making it clear both the Canucks and Tocchet would need to agree for him to return next campaign.

“It wasn’t meant to be a revelation,” LeBrun said. “But the fact is, Rick Tocchet’s deal expires at the end of the season, although there is an option for next year.

its a team option.

There have been conflicting reports on that ... there is word out there he can walk away.

It's a little unclear. The Canucks have a team option, that's known. LeBrun says he believe he's a mutual option and both sides have to opt-in. Local media came away from the press conference with Allvin with the understanding that it was just a team option.

So, yeah it is conflicting reports. Tocchet can just quit, if he wants. Paul Maurice did.

It basically boils down to whether Allvin/Rutherford are willing to punt the season. Granted, I think if we actually accept KK and Roslovic, we pretty much have regardless. Alas, management may believe otherwise.

For me, I'd rather shut down talks until the summer unless a team makes a serious pitch. The same piece of crap offers will be there in July too.

I mean, it's a little immaterial at this stage. They aren't going to make him stay given how all this is going, even if it isn't a mutual option as reported.

also old enough to "retire"

Quick breakdown of where the teams, reportedly, interested in Miller are at cap-wise and players that would be viewed as cap dumps:

Hurricanes: 1.50m
  • Kotkaniemi - 6y/4.82m
  • Carrier - 6y/2.0m
Rangers: 11.47m
  • Mika Zibanejad - 6y/8.5m

Devils: 2.82m
  • Ondrej Palata - 3y/6.0m

Bruins: 3.14m
  • Elias Lindholm - 7y/7.75m
  • Nikita Zadorov - 6y/5.0m

Stars: 1.08m (can have about 9m+ with LTIR of Seguin)
  • Matt Dumba - 2y/3.75m
  • Ilya Lyubushkin - 3y/3.25m
11 teams could take on Miller without making any major moves to their roster (Blue Jackets, Flames, Ducks, Predators, Sabres, Utah HC, Rangers. Kings, Blackhawks, Sharks, and Canadiens). Plus the Stars with Seguin on LTIR.

Loss to the Oilers
  • Was a statement in the negative direction for the Canucks
  • Tocchet has essentially pointed there next game against the Capitals as a must win
J.T. Miller
  • Is ready to be traded and has signalled to the team that he’s ready to go
  • Play on the ice signals that change is necessary
  • Everyone in the league recognizes the friction, his age, money, and term
  • Teams see the drop off in his play
  • Plenty of teams, beyond the Rangers, have stepped up
  • Hurricanes have been working incredibly hard; have presented a few different potential opportunities for the Canucks; haven’t got it over the finish line
  • Outside of the Rangers, “no one has done more work, on the Miller file, than the Carolina Hurricanes”
  • Does not think he will be Canucks by February 1st; thinks the Canucks have to pull the band-aid off
  • Canucks are 10 good days away from having a chance at locking down a wild card spot and don’t waste a Hughes MVP season

What a depressing shit show. After proving all us naysayers wrong, the team has completely imploded due to personalities and injuries. It's like Benning is haunting us from the grave as it's his one massive trade win (Miller) that's at the very heart of the problem.

Frankly, I'm just about done here. Feels like the heart of my interest in the club has been removed. I can't say if it's just being super reactive (possible), given that we have easily one of the best players in the league giving it his all pretty much every game, but the lethargy has me not even bothering to watch a lot of games anymore. Gross.

There's still 2 exit ramps before a re-tool. The first is an in-season trade of Miller/EP fixes the vibes in the room and the team goes on a run. Vibes can be funny that way. The second is Tocchet leaves at end of season and a new system revitalizes what's left of the core. Yes, our d corp is shambolic at puck movement but it's also exacerbated by the rigidity of Tocchet's system, which kills NZ speed and OZ controlled entries.
