I'd 100% be after Owen Power and then I'd try to get them to retain on Cozens down to a more appropriate cap hit to replace Pettersson at C.

I don't think they'll retain for that long. However you might be able to include Soucy or VD to offset the salaries somewhat.

Great sign, I’m just not sure if he’s really built to be a puck protection player though. He needs to play a little more water bug style and do everything fast pace and keep moving with and without the puck.

Defenders just knock him over when he tries to hold onto the puck moving slowly with his back to them. Tocchet’s “hold onto puck to make plays” methodology isn’t ideal for Petey imo.
From what you've seen from his skating over the past year or so, is it even possible for him to play fast in any manner?

He cannot separate himself with skating or deking anymore so he might as well work on puck protection.

And then if he gets his skating back he'll have both.

If I'm the GM I think this is the direction I'm going in too.

Target Power/Byram, or ideally pry both of them out of Buffalo if you can for EP40.

Split up Hughes and Hronek to each take a young D partner:

Hughes - Power
Hronek - Willander (Or Byram if he can be gotten with Power)
Myers - Soucy/EP25

If they go that way the LHD rhd Tocchet wants

Hughes Willander
Power Hronek
Soucy Myers

It'll be Myers with Hughes and Willander with Soucy, at least until they prove themselves.

So let me get this straight.

People want to trade Petey, who isn't playing his best, for guys like Power and Cozens or Byram who aren't playing their best because the grass is greener when you haven't watched them?

I promise you. If you watched a bunch of Sabres games, and were a fan of that team, you would be frustrated with them too.

Sometimes waiting is the hardest part. But Petey is an incredibly rare talent. Like, genuinely could be our best center ever at the end of his career (unless we do something criminally stupid).

Trading him for someone (or multiple players) who is also struggling, but whom we haven't watched struggle is just succumbing to the most basic of cognitive biases.
The only interesting asset in BUF is Power. He's really is sublime offensively at ES and the counting stats just aren't there because he's on PP2. Defensively still suspect though.

Cozens as some kind of main piece is a joke though. Seriously. Cozens at his best is still far worse than Petey in a slump. Not interested in Tage. And Byram has never returned to the level he showed during COL's playoff run, and he has serious injury risk.

Pass on all of them. They have to try to make it work with Petey. The alternative is turning the franchise into Sabres West.

could van trade soucy this year as well. if team isnt making the playoffs which seems likely. just audition d-petey and Kirill Kudryavtsev for the last 20 games or so.

He isn't having a good season Ill agree but there is no way they are trading him for Cozens & a pick or Cozens + Byram.

Byram is 1 hit away from being concussed & Cozens hasnt done much lately.

The first is relevant but I dont think its enough to put that offer over the top.

Power for Pete has to be the starting point or no deal. Kind of like the stance they are taking with the Rangers & Schneider

Not sure I can see buffalo dealing Power.

But a Petey deal would be a lot easier to deal with if he’s involved.

We are Sabres west sweetie.

Wonder if we could have made a Pettersson/Dahlin straight up swap work before this season. Definitely not now.

Power, maybe. Would be a risk for both sides, but in Power you're potentially giving Hughes a giant partner to keep guys in check for many years to come.

He has trade protection and would have to waive it. Derek Forbort does not have any trade protection and could be moved if we continue to unravel here. No reason why they can't sit Soucy out some games if they want to evaluate EP or KK and talk to him about moving on at the trade deadline....offer to find him the right fit so he can get settled prior to next season.

would you trade Quinn Hughes for Sebastian Aho? because i sure wouldn't. 1D is worth more than 1C IMO and Buffalo has nobody close to the level that Dahlin is at.

I could see Buffalo trading Power for Pettersson despite the current dip in play. The only time you have a chance to add a player like this is when there is some uncertainty. With Byram in the mix, Samuelsson signed long term as well, they have a logjam on the left side of their D and it isn't like Power has set the world on fire to this point in his career.

I don't see Power and Hughes being on the same pair, and he's not a "keep guys in check" player at all.

Who knows if Pettersson would be okay going Buffalo, but with Dahlin there long term, it might work out.

In the third year of his deal his NTC drops down to a 12-team list, so not a full one. I don't think he'll be traded this year, but could easily be a move heading into next season depending on the development of Pettersson and Kudryavtsev.

oh for sure, it could happen in the summer if they think EP25 is ready for 3rd pair duty.

Pettersson doesn't have any trade protection until his NMC kicks in. Despite whatever "handshake deal" they have with management, I wouldn't be shocked at all if they deal him over Miller and then trade the latter once the locker room pressure eases in the summer.

I wouldn't either, particularly if they can get a decent return (which might be a lot harder to do with Miller).
