Grub's Canucks & NHL News, Rumours, and & Fantasy GM | Roll with the Changes

For those that like numbers. I just pulled the even strength ice time of Byram, Toews and Makar in their cup final against Tampa. (looked at NHL.com )(did it very quick, hopefully no errors)

My memory was that Byram was leaned on heavily 5 on 5, as much as their top pair in Toews and Makar, and for someone who turned 21 days before the finals, he performed marvelously.

All 3 played within a few minutes of each other (EV), I didn't look but I'm sure Makar played a lot of PP.
Byram finished a +3 that series. +/- doesn't mean everything but I especially remember his puck moving and retrieval gave Tampa forwards fits to establish a forecheck.

IMO as long as Byram is healthy and willing to sign long term with Vancouver, he's a very good defenseman and target.

I'm down to trade Pete to Buffalo only because everytime they trade young players they turn into a star the next team they are on.

Believe it or not Pete has insane value. We could get a haul. And considering Miller seems to lack any value I wonder if moving Pete is the way to go.
the question is, has Miller burned bridges with the entire team over whatever incident went down?

He’s on pace for 60 points and went like 40 games without an ES goal.

Then we should make fun of him for trying to improve, clearly.

Anyway, regarding the Pettersson/Power trade: This is a bet between Pettersson (distressed asset) returning to form vs Power (overrated due to size) attaining a form he has never shown. The surer bet to me is the player that has already done it. At the same time, BUF management will overvalue what Power is due to his pedigree, so I don't see a fit.

On a different note, if players for Team Canada enjoy working with Tocchet as much as his reputation would suggest then it could bear fruit for us down the line. Bennet is a UFA at the end of the year and would be a Miller replacement in terms of edge and fire.
Bennett struggled in the pressure cooker of a Canadian market — and thrived once he was in a sunshine market. I doubt he has any interest in coming back to play in Canada.

Teams don’t give up on their 1st OA pick unless that players busts hard. It’s really pointless to talk about Powers

It's ironic that we have the best player in franchise history at a time where Rome is buring all around him.
I said this in the GDT yesterday—but I think folks are overblowing the scenario that Quinn Hughes will not re-sign if Pettersson and Miller are traded. Some are treating it like fact that the team will be worse and he will leave.

But, what if the team is better without Pettersson and Miller?

Hughes has had front row seats to Pettersson’s disappearing acts and Miller’s locker room dysfunctions. No one else on the team probably understands how that has affected the overall team. And no one else probably understands that the dynamic needs to change.

I think we are on the verge of management hedging a bet that they can get two other centers for a fraction of the price that will be just as productive on the ice with Hughes as Pettersson and Miller have been. And that will allow them to upgrade other areas of the team (like defense) too.

And I suspect that no one else on the team understands that big bet any better than Hughes.

So let me get this straight.

People want to trade Petey, who isn't playing his best, for guys like Power and Cozens or Byram who aren't playing their best because the grass is greener when you haven't watched them?

I promise you. If you watched a bunch of Sabres games, and were a fan of that team, you would be frustrated with them too.

Sometimes waiting is the hardest part. But Petey is an incredibly rare talent. Like, genuinely could be our best center ever at the end of his career (unless we do something criminally stupid).

Trading him for someone (or multiple players) who is also struggling, but whom we haven't watched struggle is just succumbing to the most basic of cognitive biases.

On the record, I have no desire to trade Pettersson. I just see it as an unfortunate eventuality, because it’s the Canucks and it makes zero sense.

I understand why he’s on a downer, but it’s no less frustrating and it lasting this long is still a red flag for me even though I really like the player. Do I believe in him? Yeah. But he’s gotta show something.

Man he's only 18 let's calm down the expectations.

Who in their right mind would leave Florida to voluntarily come to Vancouver? That is backwards.Lol.
