Yep which is why the NYI defenseman we *should* be discussing is, and say it with me folks, Ryan Pulock.
i would actually be as interested or more in Adam Pelech given we have Willander in the system.

IF he's still playing as well as the last couple years...havent seen him much recently

Nick Hague and Mattias Samuelsson would be good targets at the right price

The biggest issue we have with going after a defenseman is having the cap space to retain them

If they fit and fill that role, you trim some of the depth pieces like Soucy/Deshernais in the offseason if needed.

Having a second pairing that can go even in ~20 minutes of high leverage ice time when you have Hughe/Hronek dominating like this means you can have your third pairing play <15 minutes of soft ice time, which is not an expensive ask.

The difficult part is getting said player to carry Myers as well in those minutes.

Fair enough and i agree but Hoglander Boeser OEL - Poolman is gonna cost us 5 million to contend with already. If the cap goes up 4 million your losing Suter and Forbort for 800k contracts and being tight to the cap.

To squeeze in a 5 million dollar player it's cap in cap out.

Garland or 2 of Desharnais Hoglander Heinen Joshua have to go.

I would have zero issues sending back Hoglander Desharnais just not sure if said team will be that excited to help us out given 1 is on the 4th line with a 3m cap hit going forward and the other is getting healthy scratched. Moving Garland would be a mistake

I think it only works if you assume the team would ditch one of Soucy or Myers as well as Desharnais, with the replacement coming in around $1 million (hopefully Willander but if not someone else cheap / from the farm). Net cost would be $1 million, which they’d have to find but is more doable.

AFAIK Pelech has fallen off a cliff and Pulock isn't far behind. Perhaps with a fresh start and different coaching they can turn it around but they're also both on the wrong side of 30.

Same goes for Samuelsson, he's had a tough season last year and seemingly hasn't recovered.

Samuelsson's injuries are the main concern. He's never played played more than 55 games in a season and twice has barely got over 40. Only 24 years old but his body can't seem to handle the way he plays.

Need to trade for the next Samuelsson before he got his extension..
Kovacevic, Moser, Kesselring all were options previously discussed, gotta be ahead of the curve.

Or the backup plan of ufa vet like Pettersson, provorov etc.

Early days, but in some nice symmetry, amongst defenders with 100+ minutes this season, Hughes and Hronek are currently 1st and 3rd in the league in 5v5, score adjusted relative CF%, and Soucy and Myers are 1st and 3rd last.

The top 25 includes Sanheim, Gavrikov, Walman, and Pettersson, as well as a few Calgary defenders if they fall back to earth.

It's absurd that Yzerman didn't even shop Walman (per reporting). He just called SJS and said he'd pay a 2nd to dump his very reasonable contract. Sure would have preferred Walman at 3MMx2 over Forbort/Desharnais at 3.5MM.

Cozens is struggling right now. Wonder if we could pick up a D man with him for EP40.

Cozens + Byram + Pick

I don't think the Canucks would have any interest in Walman. My pure speculation but there's been some reports about his effort level being very low in Detroit. That's what ultimately lead Yzerman to getting rid of him. The manner in which he did continues to be hilarious.
