‘I’m trying to figure out how to play a good 200 foot game for the team’

I’m no NHL player but maybe it just involves actually striding on the back check? Instead of gliding?
he f***ed that play up by over pursuing Sanderson and not anticipating he was going to play give and gone. When 85 went pedal down it was over....there are maybe 3 guys in the game that might have had a chance to catch him and none of them play for us. That was an elite skater creating an opportunity and finishing it off.

Man this team need a 2nd pairing defenseman

everybody else

its just too polarizing
If this stretch has shown me anything it's how much we've underrated Hronek.

Like if we have established that we have a top pairing
(which we can say with Hughes and Hronek)

we need that 2nd pairing guy now, and we dont have a defenseman that is even remotely close to fitting that role

i think you can you have a good defense core with 3 good defenseman and find other guys for the other 3 with prospects and lower end guys.

But we are saying to Hughes right now, be a hart trophy candidate AND carry around some anchor as your partner AND make up for the other 5 defenseman being hot garbage AND play 26-27 minutes a night

Look at Hughes here even he is like I can't believe i have to play with this guy

...

Hronek can run the second pairing and second pp , and can do so with an Olli Maata tier partner. Much easier and cheaper to acquire. .

Hughes is unreal every game no matter who he plays with, makes more sense depth and cap allocation wise.

Desharnais, Forbort, Heinen, Hoglander

Are all ‘non-factors’ who can be traded and wouldn’t hurt the team imo. Heinen has been okay as a 3rd line player but doesn’t really move the needle at all, id say his salary is best spent on defence.

Soucy - at this point, do we include him in a salary move for a top 4 upgrade? 1 more year @ 3.25M - I think the discussion needs to happen.

We’re missing Cole and Zadorov. So I’d say we need to acquire atleast two more defencemen to try and right this ship.

Hughes - Hronek
Soucy - _______
______ - Myers

I’m now personally invested in it happening.
I'm invested in your investment ...... now how can I say this without saying "it". I know a person close that knows a person (family) on Colorado AV's. All last year everyday we would talk hockey and this and that this person would explkain how Byram was not a great player and that the Av's office wanted to move him, sure enough they did.

Its always in the back of my mind comments about Byram's hockey IQ, yet this year he seems to be doing ok, but nothing i'm selling for a 1 or 2 C for without a major peice coming back. Hence my investment in yours, whats the hype or skillset you like that you really want this is happen ?

BYRAM, yawn.

It wasn’t a great off-season for acquiring defenceman. Wallman has been great but there were red flags around him.

My theory has always been that they preferred to get the big guys when they could and scour the market in-season. Hope they could stay healthy and keep their head above water until a deal presents itself.
well its failed this is on mangement. the d market had alot of guys avaliable. the 2nd tier guys. pesce was penciled in as a devil once f.a opened. there was walker brady skeji

He's not actually my preferred choice but of the options seemingly available, I don't see anyone better. I'd prefer a gamble on K'Andre Miller as I think he will also come at a lower price and has a higher ceiling but there's almost more risk with him than Byram. When I say I'm invested, I now mean that I've written an article on what he might cost and I may end up looking like a total fool.

From what I've watched, and it's not been much given his injuries and being on the East coast for just over half a season, he's an efficient puck-mover that facilitates pressure in the offensive zone. Canucks only have one healthy defenceman capable of doing that so adding him should drastically improve their ability to generate offense.

What? I think this is completely backwards…

One guy stood in to media the other guy the coach didn’t even know where he went…
One guy even when playing poorly still plays very good defense and is one of the best in the league in many defensive categories, while the other just stops skating…
One puts up positive results away from the only puck moving dman, the only guy on the team to do so, the other needs that guy to do anything and has a bottom of the team metrics.

I don’t actually dislike JT… he has actually been one of my favourite players, but really this was just so far of the mark.
Really? Feel free to address each point then.

Never said anything about who's a better defensive player?
This might be the first time that Pettersson stood in while Miller didn't and he walked off in a hissy fit and denied the whole thing?
Who has drawn the top Cs? MacKinnon McDavid
Barkov..not Petey?

I know 'hindsight' is always 20-20, but it's fun to speculate 'what if'.

'What if' the Canucks had elected to sign Bo Horvat to a long term deal instead of Miller? Obviously the 'advantage' in year one, goes to Miller and the Canucks, as he posted a 100-point season.

But you look at the situation this season, you really have to wonder. With Miller taking a leave of absence and apparently feuding with their other star player, Elias Pettersson, you can at least express some reservations as to where or not Allvin and Co made the right call.

Horvat was the Canucks captain and younger than Miller. He might never reach Miller's point totals, but he's a consummate 'team guy' and desperately wanted to stay in Vancouver and continuing to captain the Canucks.

Horvat was probably average defensively, but the way Miller's going on the defensive side of the puck recently, he's probably no worse. And Horvat was and is a big upgrade in the faceoff dot.

One thing is for certain. If the Canucks had picked Horvat over Miller, the dressing-room would undoubtedly be a lot more harmonious place.

You are no fool sir, to actually place yourself out there with an opinion is being honest and
vulnerable at the same time, I understand more of what you mean now. Thanks for that.

For reference, here's all the best defenceman that changes teams this off-season:

Brady Skjei (American only played in the East)
Oliver Ekman-Larsen (obviously not coming back)
Nikita Zadorov
Sean Walker (American only played in the East)
Joel Edmundson (contract widely panned)
Matt Roy (American expected to stay in the USA)
Brett Pesce (American only played in the East)
Brandon Montour (powerplay guy)
Alexandre Carrier

Traded:
Chris Tanev
Ryan McDonagh
Jake Walman
J.J. Moser for Mikhail Sergachev
John Marino
Jonathan Kovacevic
Jacon Chychrun for Nick Jensen
Brian Dumoulin
Cody Ceci for Ty Emberson

So I get why they gambled. It hasn’t worked out and, I suspect, has lead to other issues getting magnified.

Walman and Chychrun stood out for me.

One costed a 3rd round, the other costed a pack of imaginary magic beans lol.

That Chychrun trade was atrocious on so many levels. Apparently some of the Senators management team LOVE Jensen so there wasn’t really a way for most teams to match given the Senators outsized opinion of him.

LMAO

Wow recently so many things are giving me Commando Dimbo vibes

Giving Hughes the C was the right move. How would it look if we traded or let walk Miller and his 100 points and stripped Horvat of the C but kept him around

Zadorov is really the only one that kinda sticks out. But that contract just won't age well.

Jensen has been great playing in an elevated role in Ottawa...probably one where both sides are are happy with how things worked out.

Probably not. But the league is stretched very thin on D these days after expansion and we had a big tall and tough fan favourite who wanted to be here and played hardball with him. Then threw over 6m on 3 big idiots on D, 2 who were 7th dmen, the other being Myers…

Meh. In a rising cap + his unique traits, I don’t think it’ll age badly at all. As long as he’s healthy, I think the contract will age just fine. There will 100% be takers if Zadorov ever gets shopped. Hes about maybe $1.2M overpaid at most.

We should’ve never let him go.
