Counterpoint:

You can't afford to waste any year of Quinn Hughes current deal. Even if the result is similar to last year (or worse) you're showing Hughes a commitment to winning that will hopefully influence him re-upping after this contract.

The team isn't far off. I've long said Hronek returning and a move for another top 4 defender changes things dramatically. That first round pick should be gone asap.

Goaltending is dialed. The forward group is deep. We're getting sewered because of the defense.
The forward group is only deep if our top 2 paid forwards play up to their potential. As is, it is pretty painful watching the team try to generate offense 5 on 5, and I would say currently this group is playing like one of the bottom-half forward group in the league.

If you believe that trading one of JTM or EP will magically fix the other, then the roster can still be salvaged by moving one of them. I just don't see it though. I wouldn't be surprised if BOTH Miller and Petterson needs a change of scenery at this point.

The funny thing is, basically everyone on here knew this defense was going to be a problem the minute they had committed to Myers, Desharnais and Forbort.

Some were higher on Desharnais, but I never thought he was an NHL player after seeing him in Edmonton and was baffled they targeted him.
VD 6'6" 220 Forbort 6'4" 206 Meyers 6'8" 230. The reality is that with Hronek, these big boys are built for the playoffs. Which I think the front office assumed we were going to make the playoffs this year. If we weren't 3 - 7 in OT. this year, but say 7 - 3 we would be looking just fine.

VD was a healthy scratch for half of Edmonton's conference final games and 6 of the cup final games.

Forbort was a healthy scratch for the entire 1st round and the 2nd half of the 2nd round.

They may be "built" for the playoffs but they lack the skills to participate in them.

Vinny D should be in the minors working on his game.Forbert should go on waivers.Bring up Mcward and DPetty.Get them some playing time.As for the rest anyone not named Hughes ,Sherwood,Garland...can leave asap.

I could be wrong but the proof was kind of right in front of us no? Miller left on absence, Pettersson started preforming. Is it a reach to think the same won't happen if Miller left permanently?
People keep saying this but Petey started playing better before Miller left and his play started dipping again before Miller came back.

The only difference was the PP/Debrusk went on a heater with goals in front of the net with tips and rebounds when Miller was absent.

I don’t know. I can imagine it getting tiring have a teammate yelling and riding your ass constantly. If that is indeed what is happening.

It was a stretch with road games and this team just plays better on the road.

If Pettersson basically quits on the team because he doesn't like a teammate, he should be the guy fired out of a cannon.
Miller has some sort of issues but he shows up in the playoffs where Petey is mia. I can't believe people are making so many excuses for him over the years. If he is being paid like the MacKinnons of the world then he needs to play like it. Brayden Point makes 9.5 and you notice him every time he is on the ice. Send him somewhere else where there is little media scrutiny and he can toil in anonymity and play for Team Sweden.

It was smooth sailing last season, but I suppose the Canucks are making up for it this year. Injuries, rifts in the room, poor performances, you name it, and the Canucks have gone through it.

All you can hope for is that the worst will soon be behind them and that the last half of the season unfolds without drama and controversy. Might be too much to ask in this market though.

A winning streak after the Xmas break would fix a lot. But with the current state of the back-end, I'm not sure this is possible either.

There’s a reason coaching has moved away from this style - it backfires more often than it produces results. Having it come from teammates can’t be any better. I’ve coached a lot of teams and have observed players criticizing each other (even when they are right, and sometimes, especially when they are right) being deeply corrosive to the team’s cohesion and success.

If we are playing the blame game, Tocchet is so low on the list it's immaterial.

His systems, his roster decisions and his ability to manage the room have all been terrible this season. I said a couple of weeks ago he deserved time to turn things around but things have only gotten worse and that time is quickly running out.

One guys answers the media
Goes to the hard areas
Leads in scoring hits fights and facoffs sticks up for teammates
Is almost 32 and is watching his last good competitive years go by while another.
At 26 plays Playstation is cliquey takes weekends off wont go to the hard areas or face media scrutiny but will make excuses after no one else did. Goes MIA in the biggest playoff in 12 yrs and after holding a team hostage and getting 96 million is on pace for 20 goals and 65pts.

I mean jeesh I know he's better than this but it's not a good look and yet here we are attacking everyone for not kissing his ass and propping him up.

Oiler fans loved Vinny D and what he did in limited time. But he is not a 5/6 guy when it is "go" time. WE loved the guy but he was not an everyday D man. Good guy and a teammate reportedly.

btw

I think the MIller/Pettersson problem was hyper sensationalized by Sekeras/Price radio and Tube show. might just be me. But of all the media I follow they did it the most and other jumped on the bandwagon.(FYI- I live in the UK. So I am not honed in on one media reporting area)

you can think pettersson needs to play better and that miller is a toxic presence that needs to go at the same time. you don't need to make one the hero and one the villain

It's pretty clear Miller has been a headcase since around his absence, while Pettersson played significantly better when Miller wasn't around.

I honestly would trade them both if it wasn't for Hughes being on this team. With Hughes being on the roster being our most important player by a long shot, you have to do everything possible to win in order to keep the captain happy with hopes of him potentially wanting to resign here. With Pettersson and Miller creating such a distraction both have became annoying to me as a fan. Like you said two totally different characters who are extremely skilled, but both have a certain amount of selfishness to their personalities aswell. My main hope us for the to put their differences behind him and play for the crest of their jersey, but if this continues I have no problem trading one of them for the best available package.

What? I think this is completely backwards…

One guy stood in to media the other guy the coach didn’t even know where he went…
One guy even when playing poorly still plays very good defense and is one of the best in the league in many defensive categories, while the other just stops skating…
One puts up positive results away from the only puck moving dman, the only guy on the team to do so, the other needs that guy to do anything and has a bottom of the team metrics.

I don’t actually dislike JT… he has actually been one of my favourite players, but really this was just so far of the mark.

That's fair. Pettersson vs Miller is a sideshow to the real problems with this team right now. Accountability cannot just apply to the players, it has to go both ways. Coaches and management have lost credibility.

We had Petey’s comments last night, here’s JT Miller today. Questions about Petey start around 3:00. Also says a lot of it is a media concoction and gets a bit testy.

‘I’m trying to figure out how to play a good 200 foot game for the team’

I’m no NHL player but maybe it just involves actually striding on the back check? Instead of gliding?

I prefer Letangs history of production, leadership, strengths and being a 3x cup Champ over Zad. Plus Letangs strength on the ice are what we need. A 2nd pairing puck mover to support the EP line.

And in my proposal the money is wash. Hog and VD are dead money. You’re creating value on the ice and not add cap.
35+ contracts stay on the books even with a retirement

Even the best captain won’t salvage a ship with a torn hull. It’s pointless .
