Even having a second unit is kind of antiquated. A few seasons ago I proposed instead of thinking of separate units think of it like football play packages. Use personnel differently to give different looks and have different strategies. I would leave Hughes out there (the QB) the entire time but can rotate everyone else. Also helps utilize skillsets of specific players far more effectively.

Potential injuries aren't really different for any players, the risk is there every game, and Byram is still an RFA.

I was trying not to get excited about a possible big trade but the EF info on top of the other things you summarized previously... There's a ton of smoke billowing.

Given the circumstances in Buffalo, maybe very steep isn't as accurate as it once was, they're getting desperate. The fit between the two teams for multiple, multiple possible pieces is really too good to ignore.

Looking at our cap sheet, it's pretty efficient. We're arguing about which bottom roster piece to cut to save a few dollars... it doesn't make sense.
Surely management sees this and the difficulties it creates trying to add pieces, this season and after, including Boeser and now Lankinen...

Byram is basically perfect fit for what this team needs, in all aspects, add in a potential Willander and the defense is suddenly completely stacked when healthy.

We have what Buffalo wants and they have what we want, somethings gotta happen either big or small , I'll be shocked if it's nothing 3/4 weeks from now.

And really for guys with other types of injuries as well (particularly things like shoulders and knees), previous injuries make it more likely that they'll get injured in that area again. It's how it is.

Byram simply hasn't been the same since the Avs Cup run. He's never played at nearly that level since. He's also had several head injuries. There is serious risk he simply can't be that player anymore (and is at risk of even more severe injury) and dismissing that out of hand is foolish.

Like, I would still be interested in him because he is a talented player and we've seen what he is at the peak of his game. But there is a lot risk in whether he can reach that again. It's been years since. We also don't really have many tradeable assets beyond draft picks (if you're excluding Willander and Lekk) - which really shouldn't be of that much interest to BUF.

All of which are known quantities that management would factor into his valuation, we're not talking Willander or Lekk territory.

Hockey is a risky sport, it's risky for Byram the same way it's risky for any other player. Byram could get concussion again easier than had he not had a concussion history yeah sure, he could also get innumerable other serious injuries at any point.


For acquisition purposes imo, his injury history isn't a major detractor, that's all.

Buffalo are ripe for the picking, but aside from Dahlin, which isn't happening, the only D I'm interested in is Byrum, and I'm a little concerned about his concussion history.

Then you have the cost, cap fit, and new contract. There has to be cap going out, while being an immediate benefit to Buffalo, I don't see them being interested in futures.

As much as one would hope Willander can come in and make an immediate impact, he's still only a 19 year old defenseman (20 in February) with zero professional experience and it wouldn't appear he is dominating at the collegiate level...hard for a management group to pin all their hopes on that.

The concern for me with Byram is the obvious concussion history, but also what the next contract looks like.

Byram cost to aquire and new contract are probably both higher than what it would take to aquire and re sign K'andre Miller.
