Canucks are actually in a pretty good position of strength from a transaction perspective. Are still a strong team with ambitions greater than just making the playoffs and are motivated to improve while there’s several desperate teams.

Also have some pieces they can move off the main roster (Hoglander & Desharnais) and some youngish almost NHLers (Raty, Bains, Karlsson, & Sasson). Obviously these aren’t key pieces but they are the type that desperate teams overvalue.

It's all about how we can spin it.

on Desharnais: hey we got a big strong defenseman who can PK and hit really hard.

on Hoglander: awww look at this lil PIGGY!!!

I really wish Friedman hadn't spouted his bullshit about Byram and Cozens for Petey because it's taken the discourse around here down a couple of rungs.

I'm firm on this. If we trade Petey, were are trading 2006 Pavel Datsyuk who put up 3 assists in the first round they lost to the Oilers in one of the biggest upsets ever. Wings fans were livid at the time.

And then the discourse. One consistency seems to be that a lot of the folks who are rosterbating about Petey don't really follow the league but follow our shitty, hysterical, drama seeking media so they have a bad taste in their mouths about Petey. But only remember that Cozens once scored 30 goals and has a charming nickname. They aren't aware that fans of the Sabres are livid with him, question his hockey sense, and question his guts since he suffered a broken nose in a fight against Hathaway he apparently plays a much more timid game.

But ZOMG he once scored 31 goals so let's trade our far far superior two way center who only scored...checks notes...89 points last year...that can't be right can it? So Cozens is two years younger than Petey and has ONE (1) career high season that barely matches the worst offensive output of Petey in injury ravaged years. Petey is miles better defensively to the point where Buffalo isn't even sure that Cozens belongs at center but...our body language experts here think he would be better because....'workhorse from whitehorse' and listening to morons like Drance and Sekeres who don't understand the game and thus need to sell drama.

Look, if we traded Petey and got like Carlsson and Mintyukov from Anaheim that could conceivably be a good hockey trade because I'm very high on those players, even if I'm not sure I would pull the trigger, I wouldn't feel betrayed by it.

But the absolute nonsense being spouted here would be the worst thing to happen to this team since the Cam Neely deal.

I can't know unequivocally what's going on in the dressing room, but all things being equal I would easily and without a second thought trade Miller before I would trade Petey IF this was an either/or situation. In reality, I think they can co-exist and this is a tempest in a teapot mostly from our horrendous hockey media.

I would be very intrigued by a Hoglander/Kakko based deal.

I like Hoglander but I think one of his fundamental flaws is that he's superlatively skilled in certain ways individually, but his hockey sense as a cog in a 5 piece wheel is very flawed. I think he's a bit like Myers in that if he plays with linemates/coaches whom he listens to, then his skills can be deployed in a productive way, but that doesn't seem to be here.

Whereas Kakko sort of seems like the Sedins in 2002 (not suggesting an impending Hart Trophy lol), in that he's very smart two-way, never hurts you, wins the puck on the boards a ton, but can't really penetrate towards the middle.
Would be very intrigued actually, to see what a puck possession, one touch passing guy like Kakko could do with Petey.

Instead of all this dumb Pettersson trade talk, I'd much rather try and find a legit #2 to carry a pairing to play while Pettersson is on the ice, seeing as how most of Hughes' minutes goes to Miller.

I'd try and find a Dobson, Dahlin, or H. Lindholm, or Byram to a lesser extent, and pay basically anything to get them.

If you have to trade Willander to get Byram, do you do it?

No just because of the concussion risk.

And Buffalo definitely asks for Willander because he's the only asset we have that they need (soon-ish top-4 RD).

So I don't see a trade here unless a 3rd party is involved (we trade Lekk to someone who trades Buffalo an RD).

I still want to add K'A Miller, his relative stats are above average on the Rangers, and that's with Fox massively skewing the results.

I suppose it's always possible for a guy like Elias Pettersson to be traded, but he is now earning $11.7m a season.

There aren't many if any teams in the league could swallow a contact like that, with that kind of term. So Friedman suggesting that a Pettersson for Cozens/Byram swap somehow makes sense is the stuff of fantasyland.

I'm not too worried about any blowback from this ridiculous trade rumor. Most people can deduce that it just makes zero sense.

Junktown

Missed this yesterday. Here's the recap for Frank Seravalli's interview on Canucks Central.

Friedman’s Trade Idea
  • Felt more like speculation than anything
  • Doesn’t have any hard intel that they the Canucks have engaged in trade talks about Elias Pettersson since his extension was signed
  • Trading Pettersson feels like a little bit of a reach
Canucks Plans
  • Based on Rutherfords & Tocchet’s comments over the weekend, people around the league are trying to figure out what makes sense
  • Thinks the focus is clearly on finding a more efficient puck-mover
  • At the same time, looking for a pure defender
  • Most of their attention has been focused on the defence market
Canucks’ Locker Room
  • Some personalities on the team that are grating
  • Miller has most definitely been hard on Pettersson for a chunk of time; does not believe this is connect to Miller’s leave of absence
  • Good teams find a way to get along; sometimes the best teams have had a lot of friction and can play off that
  • Nothing is broke nor anywhere near the stage that someone has to be traded
Desharnais
  • Would lean more towards the Canucks just trying to move off of his salary and the commitment to next season
  • Have to allow for him to be a warm body in a trade for a team giving up a defenceman
  • Everyone can see the clear limitations in his game
  • Canucks thought they could work through his limitations
Boeser
  • 30 goal scorers are expensive and he’s already making 6.65m
  • 8m is the new 6.65m
  • Has the same agent as Jake Guentzel and Boeser would come in just south of Guentzel’s contract
  • Has demonstrated he really wants to be in Vancouver
Buffalo Sabres
  • Felt like he was writing for The Onion with what was relayed to him about the meeting from their owner
  • Making a transaction with a gun to your head never works out
  • The value they place on their players isn’t the same as they are viewed around the league
  • One constant feedback he’s got about Kevyn Adams from those that deal with him is that Adams really values his players but isn’t realistic with how the market views them
  • Byram did seem very interested and excited when he arrived in Buffalo
  • Maybe scared to trade “the next Sam Reinhart”
New York Rangers
  • Everyone is on high alert, waiting for something to happen
  • Would be throwing good money after bad to improve the team right now
  • Not a good time to improve a team
  • Need a mental reset
  • Bad streak has coincided with terrible goaltending
  • Does believe the Rangers will add more but doesn’t believe it will be this week
