I really wish Friedman hadn't spouted his bullshit about Byram and Cozens for Petey because it's taken the discourse around here down a couple of rungs.
I'm firm on this. If we trade Petey, were are trading 2006 Pavel Datsyuk who put up 3 assists in the first round they lost to the Oilers in one of the biggest upsets ever. Wings fans were livid at the time.
And then the discourse. One consistency seems to be that a lot of the folks who are rosterbating about Petey don't really follow the league but follow our shitty, hysterical, drama seeking media so they have a bad taste in their mouths about Petey. But only remember that Cozens once scored 30 goals and has a charming nickname. They aren't aware that fans of the Sabres are livid with him, question his hockey sense, and question his guts since he suffered a broken nose in a fight against Hathaway he apparently plays a much more timid game.
But ZOMG he once scored 31 goals so let's trade our far far superior two way center who only scored...checks notes...89 points last year...that can't be right can it? So Cozens is two years younger than Petey and has ONE (1) career high season that barely matches the worst offensive output of Petey in injury ravaged years. Petey is miles better defensively to the point where Buffalo isn't even sure that Cozens belongs at center but...our body language experts here think he would be better because....'workhorse from whitehorse' and listening to morons like Drance and Sekeres who don't understand the game and thus need to sell drama.
Look, if we traded Petey and got like Carlsson and Mintyukov from Anaheim that could conceivably be a good hockey trade because I'm very high on those players, even if I'm not sure I would pull the trigger, I wouldn't feel betrayed by it.
But the absolute nonsense being spouted here would be the worst thing to happen to this team since the Cam Neely deal.
I can't know unequivocally what's going on in the dressing room, but all things being equal I would easily and without a second thought trade Miller before I would trade Petey IF this was an either/or situation. In reality, I think they can co-exist and this is a tempest in a teapot mostly from our horrendous hockey media.

I would be very intrigued by a Hoglander/Kakko based deal.
I like Hoglander but I think one of his fundamental flaws is that he's superlatively skilled in certain ways individually, but his hockey sense as a cog in a 5 piece wheel is very flawed. I think he's a bit like Myers in that if he plays with linemates/coaches whom he listens to, then his skills can be deployed in a productive way, but that doesn't seem to be here.
Whereas Kakko sort of seems like the Sedins in 2002 (not suggesting an impending Hart Trophy lol), in that he's very smart two-way, never hurts you, wins the puck on the boards a ton, but can't really penetrate towards the middle.
Would be very intrigued actually, to see what a puck possession, one touch passing guy like Kakko could do with Petey.
