As a Slovak fan I would like to plan already for next year. Canada has finished 6th and Slovakia 7th. I believe (though I am not sure) that 6th and 7th are placed in a group along with silver, bronze and new (Latvia). The other group gets gold, fourth, Czechs, Denmark and the Swiss. So that means Slovakia will be in Canada's group.

So my question is, does Canada play next year in Toronto or Montreal?

and you can bet the U.S. will be in Canada's group for the much hyped New Year's Eve showdown. I bet those who are employed at the TSN hype machine will be having a breakfast meeting at HQ this morning to fish out ideas and get the ball rolling. Team Canada losing is good for the bottom line at Hockey Canada and TSN...get the masses all fired up and market the **** out of the next game played by teenagers.

Canada plays in Montreal next year I'm pretty sure.

I believe it will be the reverse of 2015 when Team Canada played its group games in Mtl and moved on to T.O. for the elimination games. So, my assumption is Team Canada will play group games in Toronto and then (hopefully) move on to Montreal for the ones that matter.

Oh my mistake. For some reason I thought all Canada games (group and elim) were in the same city.

And yeah the host team can choose one team to swap groups correct? So even if USA finishes this tournament in 1st or 4th (the placings that would not have them in Canada's group) they can be moved to Canada's group.

I have no doubt that is what HC wants and will do... TC and USA in the same group New Year's eve game = profit. It is as important to Hockey Canada, if not more, than winning is. and therein lies some of the problems with Hockey Canada.

No, I'm pretty sure they can't do that in th WJC, it's based entirely on the finishes this year. They've just been lucky a lot in the past little while that they've finished in such a way that they've been in the same group most of the time.

well, yes and no. The local organizers can't, but they can request it and the IIHF will generally accommodate the request.

then how come it's never happened? Do you have a link for this? Or are you just making an assumption they can probably do this?

They can make the schedule so games against big teams come on NYE if they want, but I've never seen groups changed in WJC.

World Championships they've changed the groups, but I've never seen anything anywhere to say it's allowed in the WJC

Every tournament that's been in Canada since 2003 the previous years standings worked out so Canada and USA were in the same group, 2003 they weren't, there was no changing anything, Sweden/Finland have never changed groups so they could have a rivalry game, Russia/Canada haven't done it to play each other.

I've never heard of this swapping teams thing either. People are getting away from my original question of where Canada is playing next year and are instead obsessing about USA being in that group also and playing on December 31st.

The groupings depend on how teams finish don't they?

I'll look for it. but my understanding was that it has happened a few times...but maybe you're right and I'm just confusing it with the senior men's tournament.

your question was answered, though incorrectly initially. Canada is in Toronto and then switches to MTL for it's QF and then SF onward is in MTL.

We can discuss other things besides for a thread question that's already answered.

Toronto will host the preliminary round for the Canadian team. The medal round will be hosted by Montreal.

not obsessing, but I generally like to lambast Hockey Canada for being too profit driven/money oriented.

Thanks for the info guys.:)

So the groups will be

Toronto
Canada
Silver
Bronze
Slovakia
Latvia

Montreal
Gold
Fourth
Czechs
Denmark
Switzerland

So for those of us traveling to see Slovakia play, it is Toronto for the round robin.:)

just an interesting note, Canada/USA have been in the same group for the last 5 years, Sweden/Swiss also in the same group for the last 5 years. Those are the longest streaks running, see if they will continue.

There aren't any current been in opposite group streaks as long as that. USA/Sweden were in opposite groups for 8 straight years but that streak ended this year.

Great, so we just need to beat up on Latvia and we're good.

yeah Latvia should have a pretty decent team next year. Will be tougher than beating Belarus this year.

Will be interesting to see who gets silver and bronze to complete Canada's group. Wouldn't it be something if it was USA and Russia?

all 4 of those teams will be pretty good next year. Finland takes a dent if Laine and Puljujarvi are in the NHL. But they should still be good.

Canada's group next year will have 3 really good teams, then Slovakia and Latvia.

I guess I'm hoping for the U.S and Sweden. Sweden will be the this year's version of Canada, not many returnees and a weak draft. I would want the U.S just for the New Years Eve game but a weak team would help in the positioning but then again you have to beat tough teams regardless.

You're not wrong but it still hurts.

Would really like Sweden and Russia to be in Canada's group. Mainly because I'd like Finland to win gold today and Sweden to win bronze, but also to get a few fresh feeling matchups. A group of Sweden, Russia, Canada, Slovakia, Latvia would feel fresh for a change, with only one repeat matchup of this year (Sweden).

It can happen with the WJC. When USA Hockey announced that Buffalo would host it next, and they were going to try to have an outdoor game as a part of it, they mentioned that they could petition the IIHF to have teams swap groups, since obviously they'd want the outdoor game to be USA vs Canada. It sounded like it was of one of those "don't worry, it would just be a formality" type things.
