So many thoughts.

We came out of the gate nervous, and it took us forever to settle in. We weren’t pressing, we weren’t playing our game. We almost beat ourselves in the first half just letting them counter, letting them high press, letting them pass into the area above the box. It was really embarrassing.

The longer the game went on, the more the game tilted in our favor. The second half I was happy, even though we took really long to score, we were playing our game. We weren’t letting them dictate. The first half was a team I didn’t know. The second half was the Cote D’Ivoire I know. They did not get much done in the second half, really just that one shot.

So much credit to Pedro Vite. I scouted him a bit at Pumas to prep for this matchup, I knew he was good and I had heard from Liga Mx fans he was really good, but I still underestimated him. Mr. Vite, my apologies, I did not know your game. Respect. He dominated the midfield the entire night. In a game that was otherwise pretty even I’ve never seen such a huge Mid-Dif and it ultimately came down to Vite and Caicedo but especially Vite today.

I honestly knew coming in that Amad, Yan Diomande, Pepe, Bazo, Bonny, could and would dice up their center backs. I was not prepared for how badly we would get torn up in the midfield. I was kinda looking forward to like the comments about "how are Piero and Ordonez getting diced up so much" and they were getting diced up when we had the ball, we just had the ball so rarely we weren't able to actually generate volume of chances.

Stats wise, 1.68 - 1.02 xG, 48-52 poss (that's not good, we need to work on that), 15-12 shots, 4-1 SOG, 2-1 big chances. I felt we were the better team. We sort of deserved to win, it was not convincing, particularly with how nervy we came out in the first half. But I've said, like so many of these players are so inexperienced. Amad came in with 19 caps, Yan 10, Bazo 6, Bonny 1, Wahi 2, Inao 9. They will be so much better in the 4th game of the tournament than the first game of the tournament. It was good to get the jitters out, to establish how we want to play ball, and we'll keep growing as a team through the tournament.

Ndicka has also been doing live ball drills. I think he'll be back for Germany, if not for Curacao, and certainly for the R32 game.

Hence the "seeding" qualifier.

But no, Australia over Turkiye clearly a bigger upset (with seeds too).

Bigger bookmaker upset, but not sure if a bigger seeding upset?

Looking at the FIFA rankings on Nov 19th when the World Cup draw was done I see:

Turkey 25th
Australia 26th

Ecuador 23rd
Ivory Coast 42nd

Turkey got in after the Cup draw as the UEFA Path C winner, but looks like it was only Turkey 22nd, Australia 27th going into their match with current FIFA rankings.

My bad then, I just assumed Australia was lower and Turkiye higher.

And that Ivory Coast and Ecuador were closer. Since those would all make more sense.
