It’s only a small part of good defence really. Much, much more important is good positional play and how responsibly a player plays defence the whole game consistently. You show your lack of understanding with your comment.
McDavid is the only player on this team doing something every shift. RNH is ok too, the rest are absolute horsetrash.
I am quite disappointed in Barzal...very inefficient player. All the talent in the world, but wastes so much unnecessary energy skating into areas that are not dangerous, constantly takes weak shots, skates himself out of prime scoring areas, stickhandling like hes surrounded by 3 players in open ice for no reason when no ones close to the guy ... so much possession so little result. Needs that killer instinct to move to the next level. Hes created so much but has been failing miserably at putting his chances away.
Don't worry, just one group stage game that had no real stakes. On top of that Canada could have a far better team. In best on best only McDavid is a lock. Team Finland will have almost the same team. With minor changes like Barkov/Risto/Laine/Vats/Maatta in and some others out. In addition Canada has a far better track record on NA ice size than international, so it affects also.

There is no one without another, positional game doesnt matter at all if you suck blocking passing lanes ect. Then youre just a pylon. I think it was reasonable answer for him, considering some one just said stick skills are meaningless in hockey defence, it is exactly the opposite.
I didn’t say stick skills or blocking passes are useless in defending. They are used in fact much more in the way that does not lead into takeaways, but still made into preventing a goal being scored. Just think about it, how many takeaways do the best takeaway specialists get per game? Then think of how many times opponents are really attacking and trying to get goals or goal chances per game? Takeaways are about once per game for very good players in them, but preventing goals and scoring chances with good defensive plays and positional play happen by good defensive players several times per game. So it is much, much more important to just prevent goals than to get exact takeaways. Thus takeaways are a way overrated stat, if you want to really understand who are good defensive players. Takeaways are really a very small part of really good defensive playing.
