Slovakia has seriously become a frustrating hockey team to watch in every tournament at the men's level.

what does the table look like after the 3way tie? Is it total point differential or head-head?

I haven't found an update. Russia has 6 points. The other three teams have 4 points. Slovenia might have the tie breaker on the US with the OT victory, but they have a big negative goal differential.

Based on Swedish commentators, head-to-head is the deciding factor.

OAR
Slovenia
USA
Slovakia

Congrats Slovenia. Second period cost us the game and the QF. I am not pesimistic about this team. We played better 5 on 5, cought up on shots on goal. Lost by disalowed goal and too many penalties called onesided.

The coach has been with the team shortly and with little more luck we could have made it to QF. We did not allow any even strenght goal, we scored two. One was called off. Going to shootout I knew we were screwed as we dont realy have goal scorers, maybe Nagy. Bakos also looks like good second liner. Expected Surovy in SO.

We will get there. Many ypung players look promissing. It is very possitive that new coach did not drag dead weight from Slovan and build a new younger team.

Yea someone in the USA OAR board just confirmed that too. We really shot ourselves in the foot today with FO's and discipline. We will be playing Sweden or Finland in the first round instead of a bye or Germany/Norway. Congrats to Slovenia

Not true. We will be playing either USA, Czech Republic or Switzerland. It all depends on the CZE v. SUI game:
Switzerland 0 pts -- Slovakia v. USA
Switzerland 1 pts -- Slovakia v. Switzerland
Switzerland 2/3 pts - Slovakia v. Czech Republic

Ohh nice thanks for the clarification

The good news is, like you said previously, Slovakia does their best work against better competiton.

With Satan as GM, I hope the NHL'ers shows up for the WC. It's not good for the growth of the game in Slovakia when they keep missing the quarter finals every year.

Barring trades at the deadline, all of Gaborik, Jaros, Sekera, Tatar, Panik and Jurco should be available. I'm including Jaros as Belleville are far down the standings in the AHL.

And those are just the guys likely to miss the playoffs. A couple of more could be available after the first playoff round.

I wish we had Kopitar aswell. We would be absolutely dominant force in this tournament. We are so much better with him.

Too bad this golden generation of ours is getting old and no good young promising players behind.

As cool as it is you are watching Slovenian swansong. We will probably never see the Olympics again, let alone be second in round robin group.

You have no idea how historical this is for us.

Yep, this is our hockey at the absolute peak. Such a historical moment for this tiny family called Slovenian hockey.

This is why Slovakia has become frustrating. Not to take anything away from Slovenia, but Slovakia is a constant fixture in the top division at the world juniors, yet barely any of their players translates into good players in the European leagues.

Slovenia, who are even developing far fewer players, have been able to beat Slovakia at the past two Olympics. And also Germany, Belarus and Norway have surpassed Slovakia at the IIHF ranking.

Congrats to Slovenia. They deserved to win this game. Their power play looks as good as anyone's in the tournament. Their success in these Olympics, as well as in Sochi, should draw some kids into the sport. And so maybe 15 years from now you'll have a few decent prospects.

Why is the new guard not as good as the old one? Isn't the EBEL/AlpsHL route good? I understand that you don't have a lot of money for hockey, but playing in the Austrian leagues, considering that the juniors play there too, should be a good option.

It will take a long time for a new generation like this. Slovenian hockey (apart from this golden generation) basically fell apart, this players that are playing in this olympics grew up and developed in solid players when our two top clubs Jesenice and Olimpija where strong contenders in Austrian Ebel league. Now, both clubs are more or less dead and out of EBEL, they arent producing any meaningful talent. And how could if they dont have any money at all.

Are there any talents besides Drozg? I know there is Simsic, but then? Slovakia had its own golden generation few years back, but now its gone and no one to replace it, so as a result you see us losing to Slovenia

Well there's a point to be made here. You could argue that the best Slovak players are better than the best Slovene players (numbers in the NHL for example). However, there is a real gap between Slovak NHLers and those who will be good in the top European leagues. Slovenia have some fantastic forwards for the KHL/SHL level, which of course were available whilst the best Slovaks weren't (of course there is the argument that when this happened in Sochi, Slovenia won as well).

Slovakia's roster is basically a really strange mix of third/fourth liners in good leagues, and top liners in poor leagues, and there's just no real quality there, especially for what you would need in a shootout.

Slovenia is a bogey opponent for Slovakia! Remember in Sochi(Best to best) 14 Slovenie beat Slovaks 3:1.

There are no Slovenian clubs in the EBEL anymore. Both Jesenice and Ljubljana are bankrupt. Their successor clubs play in the Alps HL, but that's a clear step below EBEL.

It rasies the question as to why this happens. Looking back at some of their "failed" NHL'ers born in the 70's, guys like Richard Lintner, Jaroslav Obsut, Martin Strbak, Lubos Bartecko and Rastislav Pavlikovsky returned home to Europe, had good careers and were key fixtures on Slovakias national team for many years.

But then looking at their 80's generation of NHL'ers who returned home...

Ladislav Nagy's career in Europe should have been better. And whatever happened to Juraj Kolnik, Stefan Ruzicka, Radovan Somik, Branislav Mezei, Milan Jurcina and now most recently Andrej Meszaros? How come these guys weren't able to keep a job on Slovakia's national team past 30-32 years of age?

Branko Radivojevic and Tomas Surovy are right on the cusp of belonging on this long list of players as well. It is mind-boggling to me how seemingly every Slovak player who returned home from the NHL hits a wall at this age, and are unable to maintain a consistant spot on the national team despite said national team is getting weaker and weaker.

Switzerland 0 pts -- Slovakia v. USA

I don't understand, here's what I get:

Swiss 0 points:

1. SWE/FIN
2. CZE
3. RUS
4. CAN/SWE/FIN
5. CAN/SWE/FIN
6. SLO
7. USA
8. SVK
9. SUI

10. GER/NOR
11. GER/NOR
12. KOR

(SVK plays SUI)

Swiss 1 point:

1. SWE/FIN
2. CZE
3. RUS
4. CAN/SWE/FIN
5. CAN/SWE/FIN
6. SUI
7. SLO
8. USA
9. SVK

10. GER/NOR
11. GER/NOR
12. KOR

(SVK plays USA)

Swiss 2 points:

1. SWE/FIN
2. CAN
3. RUS
4. CZE/SWE/FIN
5. CZE/SWE/FIN
6. SUI
7. SLO
8. USA
9. SVK

10. GER/NOR
11. GER/NOR
12. KOR

(SVK plays USA)

Swiss 3 points:

1. SWE/FIN
2. CAN
3. RUS
4. SUI/SWE/FIN
5. SUI/SWE/FIN
6. CZE
7. SLO
8. USA
9. SVK

10. GER/NOR
11. GER/NOR

Edit: I'm assuming SUI will have a better goal differential than GER/NOR in scenario 1, and that CAN beats KOR in all scenarios

First ranking criteria is group position, second points. That means Slovakia is 10th and will play best 3rd placed team in the groups. So USA or third team from group A. Slovenia ( 6th) will play Norway.
