That is true.

It is just that the two alternatives for the round of 32 as posted by FIFA are either:

1. Match 73: Runner-up Group A vs Runner-up Group B

2. Match 85: Winner Group B vs Best 3rd place Group E/F/G/I/J

I am seeing a few 3rd place teams in Groups E/F/G/I/J that are better teams than the team that will end up finishing 2nd in Group A.

So being Match 73 is probably better than being Match 85.

I dunno how many 3rd place finishers will be better than Mexico.

I think the second round is going to feature fewer upsets as teams start to build chemistry.

Even South Africa and Czechia looked more like themselves than they did in the first game. Better teams will improve substantially from matchday 1 to matchday 2, more defense and structure teams won’t.
