It was a Korea chance, not Mexico :sarcasm:
Haven't you heard about the Korean Jesus?

Sucks that this game was decided on an error. South Korean goaltender made some great saves, but his mistake cost the Koreans the game.

Neither team looked very good. I do think Mexico deserved to win, as they were just slightly better on the attack, but they didn't generate many chances either, and the one goal was just the goalie biffing it.

South Korea were really afraid of losing the ball. And I sort of get it, because they don't have players who win 1v1. But sitting back and doing nothing wasn't the answer either because you need to create volume of chances to score. Any given chance has low probability of success, so it is more important to get 10 chances and maybe one of them goes in than trying 100 passes to set up the one perfect chance that probably also won't go in.

Mexico were more direct. They forced the goalkeeper to make plays, and by forcing the goalkeeper to touch the ball a lot they forced a mistake out of him. I don't think Mexico looks like a very dangerous team, they're not going to trouble teams that have attacking talent, but I would say they have more upside than Korea.

Looking at social media I can already tell, the fuss is going to be about "why does Hong use the 3 back system."

I don't even agree with using the 3 back system. But I don't think the system is what caused the result today.

The Korean attack system works on paper. The Mexican defense system also works on paper. At the end of the day, a lot of football comes down to can you beat the man in front of you. That's why gamebreaking talents like Yamal, Nico Williams, Olise, Mbappe, Doue, Demeble, Musiala, etc are so valuable.

Realistically, neither Korea nor Mexico has a lot of gamebreaking talent. But Mexico tried to make plays, they made the Korean GK touch the ball as much as possible, and eventually he made a mistake. Korea was so afraid to lose the ball, that they didn't try to make plays until the very end. That's not a system issue, you can be just as timid with 4 back as with 3 back.
