GDT: Group A • Feb. 13 • Russia vs. Slovenia

You saying Russia sucks then?

With what Slovenia has to work with, they are a pretty impressive hockey country.

Slovenia deserves great credit for showing intense emotion and effort against Russia, but its really hard to duplicate that day after day when you are playing great teams. Among Eastern Europeans, that type of emotional effort seems to be reserved for Russia. I'll be interested to see whether Slovenia can summon up the same emotional tide against the Americans and Slovakians.

I watched the full replay the the game yesterday. I couldn't catch everything when it was live as I was at work, but I caught bits and pieces.

I thought we played a good game, very dynamic and some excellent plays and passing, although poor finishing. Robert Kristan did have a good game but he's not the reason we didn't score more goals; we simply missed the net too many times.

Pavel Datsyuk didn't look like himself and that is worrying indeed. I also thought Nikitin had a poor game in general and on both goals Ziga Jeglic was all alone in the slot which cannot happen. I thought there were a couple more scoring chances for the Slovenians which can't happen against stronger teams.

Valeri Nichushkin was excellent, such an explosive player. It was very nice seeing him congratulate him as they did.

I don't expect to see much of Nikitin tomorrow against the US. Belov probably won himself a reprieve with his blast from the blue line for a goal. It will be interesting to see the D combinations tomorrow.

It seems to me that the FHR needs to launch some kind of project to correct the problem that you so accurately describe about the D men. It is a problem when so many talented forwards are offset and cancelled out by so few decent defensemen. The system is failing when that type of imbalance exists.

Exactly! This imbalance is not a mere coincidence, and something has be amended in the junior system.
