Gretzky vs. Lemieux stats head to head

I don't have them all, but I remember more than a few.

Certainly the most dominate performance by Mario against Wayne would be his five goal, seven point, night against Gretz' Blues in '96. (Incidentally on Mario's first night back after his wife gave birth prematurely to their third child).

And Wayne's most dominate performance against Mario is probably his 6 point game in '89. Playing for the Kings, Gretz had three goals (one of them shorthanded), and three assists. If I remember it right Bernie Nicholls also had a hat trick, with all three goals being set up by Wayne.

Well, a sample size of 20-30 games isn't bad. 1-2 games per season (minus Lemieux's injuries). I'm not trying to win an argument, I'm just interested.

sick video.
Awesome avatar too, Orr is a true hero of mine; and my whole family for that matter

I think a "Damn you, David Volek" is in order. He robbed us of the chance to see a Roy/Lemieux series and ultimately Gretzky/Lemieux.

Jeez, why did Lemieux get pwned so badly by Gretzky in 1996-97? He was still the best player in the world except perhaps Dominik Hasek. 4 games, Gretzky had 2G, 7A, Lemieux had 1A. Brutal!

Speaking of "Damn you, David Volek" moments, I say that every time I open up my Upper Deck binder and have to look at him first, despite being a year filled with superstars.

Wow, good effort.

I actually had the game from February 10,1990 on VHS Penguins 7 Kings 6 OT winner. It's been about 3 years since I've last seen it because it got lost somehow or stolen. But I remember Rob Brown scores the OT winner and that Mario & Wayne were spectacular. I remember my jaw hitting the floor watching Gretzky make beautiful pass after beautiful pass setting up scoring chances, but Pittsburgh's goalie(I think it was Wendel Young)actually standing on his head. This was Gretzky at his peek I think he had 4 points. I have about 40 games from the 1989-1990 season on VHS including the 1990 all-star game.

If I count correctly, it looks like 21 points to 41 points or something close to that. However, there could be a lot of reasons for the discrepancies.

1) First-time poster, so I apologize for not knowing how to do a table.
2) I welcome any corrections or new information.
3) hockey-reference.com doesn't have Plus/Minus for pre 87-88 games, so this data is incomplete. +/- totals for 23 games are really for 16 games. The 14 post-Kings-trade games are complete.

Stat line is Goals-Assists-Points, Plus/Minus if available

HSP shows that Mario played in the game before the December 5 game (November 30) and the game after (December 6), but that doesn't necessarily mean he played on December 5. He played February 26, but doesn't show up in the boxscores immediately prior to the February 24 game. These games may move Gretzky's line as high as 15-45-60.

Now you guys can do that analysis stuff that you always do, now that you have, to the best of my knowledge, stats for all the games the played against each other.

Amazing post. I'm not surprised Gretzky outscored Lemieux head to head in his Edmonton years, but I'm very intrigued by the results of the post Edmonton years, especially the +/- and win loss record!

Also, do you know for sure if Lemieux played in every one of these games?

Not sure how the 2 greatest players ever could elevate their games any more than they did.

I agree, although it's interesting trivia but would hardly change the way we view these players.

It's not monumental, but the fact Gretzky owned Lemiuex in head-to-head competition throughout the years is only another feather in the cap of the pro-Gretzky camp.
