I totally disagree. I think his record in running Phoenix is looked upon as far worse than it really was.

You are spot on.
People often say that Tippett was able to turn the team around with the same roster, which is not true. 5 of their top 6 goal scorers in Tippett's first year were either acquired at the deadline in TGO's last season, over the summer (in Vrbata's case) or during the next season. Not to mention that TGO's teams had a lot of youngsters, like Keith Yandle, and Tippett had the benefit of their continued development and, in Yandle's case, his first full season.
That doesn't mean TGO's a better coach than Tippett, just that it's not fair to judge them by their records with PHO because they were coaching different rosters.
