As soon as he's healthy he'll be back in the lineup in McBain's stead, pretty sure about that. By now though it seems apparent that Muzzin-Martinez is a better pairing than anything with Ehrhoff so looks like they will probably be sticking together for a decent top 4... Bottom pair of Greene-Ehrhoff could be good, could also be a dumpster fire. I think we'll find out pretty soon.

Dumpster fire gets my vote. Ehrhoff would leave all the D responsibilities to Greene. Greene needs to play with a partner that can play the D game. Forbort is built for that, Martinez can do it, McNabb is too slow in corners like Greene.

Bottom pair of Greene-Martinez is what helped us win 2 cups.

But thats a $6.5M proposition now, wasnt back then.

I like both. A lot. But one, or both, need to go before their contracts come up.

I think Greene is abysmal and getting worse, but a large chunk of the 'leadership' group already missing, so I wonder what the effects of Greene's absence would be. having said that I wouldnt be against trading him. we've won 6 games without him, why put him in the lineup and risk changing whats working?

One of the big issues, besides cost, is that Greene stopped being a viable partner for Martinez last season. His lack of effectiveness at actually playing defense made Martinez much less effective. If Sutter breaks up Muzzin/Marty to pair with Greene again, then he's lost his mind. Finally a second pairing that is showing effectiveness similar to Mitchell/Voynov and now is not the time to cater to one of our worst defenders in Greene.

I wanted Mitchell to be kept over Greene.

That said, I don't hate him. He is effective with the right partner and sheltered minutes.

Hope he gets past his injuries. Kings need another physical defenseman.

The Kings should keep Greene around until Forbort shows he can be a regular in the line up. When that happens, they should think about moving Greene next season.

Greene is better than people give him credit for, he's just not able to stay healthy.

Like for what it's worth, he's basically a more physical Johnny Oduya, and Oduya plays on Dallas' 2nd pairing.

Now, not saying Oduya is phenomenal either, but as others have pointed out, it's not that Greene is objectively bad as much as he's just relatively bad compared to the rest of our D right now. There's teams out there that he'd be a #4 on.

Greene is getting slower and worse every season. 2-3 years ago, I loved him. he just doesnt bring what he used to and like you said, he cant stay healthy for the life of him. he takes a lot of bad penalties as well

I get incredibly nervous anytime DL make any type of D decision. Money and assets given up always seem to be lopsided.

Perhaps my memory is foggy, but the only D that he gave up too much was for Sekera. Who else has he blown assets on? I think the only other D trade in the past few years was Ellerby for i think a 5th round pick (i don't deem this as lopsided).

The only other recent D trade i can recall is McNabb, and that's turning out to be a damn good trade.

Edit: I'm only speaking on bringing D in, not those leaving like Hickey.

I think he's been phased out by the current state of the NHL. Much like when the lockout ended and guys like Hal Gill were sent out on the ice and got burned repeatedly without the ability to hook, hold and grab offensive players. The foot speed has been on the decline for years, there are fixes for that in off season training but apparently that has not been on the schedule for Greene. With Ehrhoff injured yesterday I fully expect Greene back in the lineup next game and for him to be a minus in limited minutes, not because of effort simply because he can't.

Greene was solid for his first few seasons here, but he started slipping a while ago. It's not gonna get much better except is spurts. Makes many boneheaded plays, takes too many penalties at bad times, and is real slow. He's a great member of our best teams in history, but it's time to move on. His deal is way too long, and though 2.5m isn't bad for a bottom pair defensman, this is place we could save money and upgrade slightly. Giving Forbort a chance saves money, isn't a downgrade at this point IMO(and will only get better with experience), and is good asset management if we could get something for him. Time is now (ASAP).

I agree with everything here except the bolded; they might be able to get a bit more for him at the deadline from a bubble-team in desperate need of D-help (e.g., the 2014-15 Kings --albeit, last season's Sekera > current Matt Greene). It's not like Greene will complain if he's just banished into the press box until then, anyway...

This is what happens to big, tough, stay at home dmen. One game they're shut down dependable guys on the blue line they lose a half step or a step and they turn into a liability. I think Lombardi is going to have to get real creative to get out of this contract as the scouts surely can see what us couch potato fans are seeing and have seen. Enter Col Trautman.

If Lombardi ever decided to trade Greene, he isn't going to have a hard time trading him. Which should tell some of you guys that Greene isn't nearly as bad as some of you guys are painting him out to be.

Yeah we heard the same thing last year about Richards.

0-3 with him. 7-0 without him. The truth hurts.

Now, I love Matt Greene. But the truth of the matter is that all players ultimately outlive their usefulness. The time has come for Matt Greene. Would love to see him as a coach and keep him in the room.

So, you're blaming Greene for the early season losses???

Like I said, Greene is tradeable, and good enough to play on another nhl team.

Yes, I went to all three games and he was absolutely brutal from north to south. Those two penalties he took virtually back-to-back in the second period that led to one goal all by itself was enough to blame him on the game 3 loss. He was in all three games and they looked like **** on defense all those games.

It is not a coincidence that the defense has looked so much better in the last seven games that he has been absent.

Man I wish Greene wasn't so slow, kings could use his physical presence on the back end for sure.
