Post-Game Talk: Great effort in shootout loss to Dallas!

Newhook on pace for close to 4th line production getting 2nd line and PP minutes is embarrassing at this point

I know they dont want to break up certain lines but its just not acceptable

I'd move on from Newhook in the offseason to be honest.

Demidov obviously fits right in to the top 6.

As for right now, I would like to give Heineman the opportunity. Newhook squanders so many chances with his weak shot and terrible finishing. I'm convinced Heineman would score more in that position. Not to mention he's just a better overall player

Interesting as Newhook’s finish to last season made me optimistic for him in the offseason.

But his play this season has changed my mind quickly. He’s a weird player, it’s like he fits in and keeps up while doing nothing really. He doesn’t hurt anything but doesn’t enhance anything either. He’s just taking up a spot for now until better players arrive is what I’m feeling now. But like I said, the way he finished last season, especially coming back from that injury, I really thought there’d be more to him. It could still change but I’m not optimistic.

Edit: haha, I read last off season. I’m a little daft this morning and won’t edit this unnecessary response. :coffee:

I feel the same way. I was sure Dvorak was expendable because Newhook could take his spot based on his play at the end of last season. Now, I doubt it.

Newhook is "all effort, zero impact" since the season started.

Juast like Dvorak, Armia, Gallagher, Anderson for the most part except that he is younger and faster.

So we're keeping Dvo?! YES!!!! :D

Sort of agree. I think Newhook would be a fantastic 3rd liner. His shot is actually very good, the issue is his puckhandling and his ability to get it off. We've seen him snipe goals before, I wouldn't call his shot weak at all.

But I do agree he doesn't look like a top6 guy. I would be fine keeping him OR moving him, but I wouldn't say he's washed or not an NHLer.

Positives of Newhook: he creates things with his speed. In a man on man D he can stick with anyone in the NHL.
He’ll never be much of a playmaker but he could ask Evans how he improved his shot. He’s in the wrong chair, he’s not a top-6.

They all bring more than Newhook do this season, they aren't zero impact. Although, Gally is getting there because his batteries are running on fumes now.

Also, Anderson is faster than Newhook and Dvorak is not that much slower based on NHL Edge. And Newhook has lost skating speed every seasons since 2022-2023 (and his shot also lost speed this year).

All of a sudden in the last month, there is an entirely different feel to watching this team play......how can anyone not be happy eh......

Go Habs Go!!!
We are no longer an 'easy out' on other teams schedules
Not anymore
And the scary thing is we're only going to be getting better as we go along

It's exciting :D

.
Kind of splitting hairs aren't you

You look at the standings and you can go up or down like three spots on a given night. (Like the Habs tonight).

Splitting hairs suggests a trivial matter. I'd argue that the ultra tight standings suggest that any game in hand is significant.

Well... one of his linemates has started playing better in the last 2-3 weeks or so... So perhaps just needs a bit of time. THe other, Newhook, is completely useless no matter who he plays with. I think Laine needs a center that can make space for him and he can just wire shots at the net. Or... I think for Laine , who has some decent ability to enter the zone and create plays too, have a linemate that can finish. Lol... either or... this line doesn't really work 5 on 5.
Having watched Laine play his whole NHL career I can tell that he is still not up to speed and far from how good he is when his up to speed. His ES play will get much better when he’s found his form and is up to speed, the 2nd line will be much better down the stretch this season. Next season when Demidov joins the group should give some headaches for the opponents coaches when it comes to line matching against the Habs 😎

No doubt he can be much better!

I have the same feeling about Newhook, bit that is only based on the games I have watched him play this season. I have no idea what his high level is, but he seems like a placeholder until Demidov comes over.
