But are athletes from the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, and Gibraltar allowed to compete? What about the various UK territories? Perhaps we should call it "Team GB, and also islands like Skye, Wight, the Orkney Islands, and all other islands that are apart of England, Scotland, or Wales, and the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar and the remaining 13 overseas territories, and also some Northern Irish should they choose to play for us"
I like that name...

I'm sure the "it's coming home" references are just a meme about England football fan mentality at the World Cup.

But I still feel I need to be nitpicky and point out that it's not correct to say the UK either.

The "Great Britain" name in the Olympics and sports where we don't compete separately as England/Wales/Scotland/NI is meant to deliberately exclude Northern Ireland. Since under the Good Friday Agreement, people from Northern Ireland are given the choice to either represent Great Britain or the Republic of Ireland, for political reasons.

If we are being really pedantic, Great Britain is actually meant to be a geographical term, for the largest island or mainland of the British Isles. The nations of England, Scotland and Wales all contain smaller islands which are not part of the island of Great Britain, but it's generally used as the convenient collective term for the three nations with the exclusion of Northern Ireland.

The full name of the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

There's an excellent youtube video on this for anyone who wants to learn something.

There's a bit of a parallel in "Scandinavia". Commonly used to refer culturally/politically to all five Nordic countries. But sometimes to just Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and sometimes to only the latter three. In the strictest sense it's a geographic term for the peninsula, thus excluding Denmark and Iceland and including a portion of Finland. One learns to be not too picky about how people talk as long as the meaning comes through. :)

And congrats! A well earned win.

Impressed by UK. But i dont see them taking any points from Switzerland and Czech. 3 points against Sweden is a sure thing thought. But i dont think its enough to make the playoffs.

Though the ice hockey federation replaced itself going from GB to UK back in the day, so although the national team is still GB I think calling it UK is less wrong in hockey than in almost any other context.

Still, it's slightly irritating when the name is right there on the box score but people still insist on saying something else for some reason

This name conflict is right mental innit bruv. Just watch the name on the telly m8 and don't be a bellend about it.
