Has no one in Toronto ever heard the phrase "defense wins championships"? Granted yes, OEL has had a resurgence since leaving the wrong coast and I'm not saying their overall D is bad, but it certainly isn't their strength and hasn't been for a very long time
But the defense has absolutely been a strength this year and depth scoring has been an actual issue this year…and we lost game 7 last year 2-1. Getting offence in the playoffs has been the bigger issue lol

No, they are fine on D. Tanev, McCabe, Rielly, OEL is a very good top 4. It is missing that true #1, though. The bottom pairing guys like Benoit and Timmins are fine. You don’t need all-stars there. Hakanpaa might not be reliable, so they might need to make a trade for a 7th d-man type as insurance because the rest of them are inexperienced. This season, D has actually been their strength. Along with the goalies.

The most glaring need is at C and more offensive depth.
We absolutely agree about missing that big #1 piece, that's what I've been preaching for years. Reilly is a great #2, like Chabot can be, but is miscast as a #1 and consequently will never take them to the promised land. The slotting of a true #1 would make everything else fall into place beautifully. Time has been proving me right, year after year, to the tune of an NHL record number of consecutive first round exits 🤷‍♂️

Ok, and how about the last decade during which time they have been spending far and away the most money on their forwards of any NHL team? How well has that panned out?

Beautiful B.C.
The issues of 4 or 5 years ago have nothing to do and no relevance to this year or last year.
The past is very important in determining the future, though.

For example, the Senators have never beaten the Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs before. Using this data, we can determine that they never will in the future!

Now if we use the last few years of data, showing the senators cant even make the playoffs and cross reference that with the arrogance of their fanbase in the summertime and you will begin to see why they hang out in Leafs related threads instead of enjoying their own team. :sarcasm::naughty:

The defense and goaltending have been terrific so far. The issue is what it has been the last few years, a lack of depth scoring. In our case currently, a #3 center is priority #1.

Cool, enjoy the first round of the playoffs followed quickly by golf season to set another NHL record for playoff futility 👍

The Leafs should try to snag Christian Dvorak in a bigger deal with the Habs. He fits that 3C role a bit better than Granlund would. The Habs would probably make the cap work and the cost wouldn't be overly high.

He's got connections to Marner and Nylander from junior hockey also played with Matthews at the WJHCs. Fits that gritty, two-way type and has a bit of a sneaky good shot.
Dvorak is terrible

What’s the cost of Dvo @ 50% ?

Definitely would be interested, worth a shot

"If Toronto doesn't do what I say, they'll never be able to win!"

or in other words

"I am too arrogant to admit I haven't watched Toronto much this season and am basing my opinion on an outdated and incorrect opinion I was fed in the past".

You have that Summertime Sens' fans confidence but its November now, lil dude.

Another one who thinks offense wins championships, cool. You know what, my bad, I apologize for trolling, I prefer you guys to Hab fans at least and tbh I prefer to see you guys keep doing the same thing year after year and getting the same result, I'm just a child at heart who loves his schadenfraude too much some days 🤷‍♂️. Take care and enjoy the weekend, it's Friday after all 🥳

No, I don't.

In fact, nobody has said anything about "offence wins championships" except you.

"Don’t really need defensive depth, a center is by far the priority."

.... see how that doesn't mean or even imply in the slightest "offense wins championships"?

That's because it doesn't. :teach:;)

How many Leaf games have you watched? the idea that defense isn't their strength isn't true.

It would have been true in 2018 but we aren't in 2018.

We are in November 2024, and November 2024 defense is absolutely a strength, It's actually their offense that is middle of the pack, that's almost entirely due to not having a healthy forward group all year, incredible 7 forwards being out right now.

But that doesn't mean defense isn't a strength.

There is a reason they went 7-2 without Matthews

Not as many as you for sure. I'm looking at the big picture from the last decade of a team that had 3 guys making double digits up front when no other team had more than one and who now has four. A team who has set a pretty dubious record for playoff failure over that time too coincidentally. You guys never watch the Devils under Lou? They could barely score in the playoffs too, but they had 2 elite D, an elite goalie and won multiple cups 🤷‍♂️.... Yup, you watch more games than me, so you know better than I what they really need to win in the playoffs I guess, but I just haven't seen the proof of that. How much longer is Shanny gonna get? My best friend & Leaf fan wanted him tossed off the CN tower long ago
