This GR roster has a lot of talent, but as a team, they are pretty terrible. I put a lot of that on the vets. They're there to make things easier on the kids, and they did just the opposite.
It can't be easy with how much of the roster was brought over at the very end of the season. First time playing in a new league for many of the kids.

Just saw the highlights to o.t cause fell asleep ... pathetic , how do you blow a 4-1 lead in the 3rd period and get eliminated.

Hopefully we actually have a bunch of good nhl players here who’ll make an impact and not like when g.r won and all we had was what Tatar and jurco who was a bust? Dont recall many nhl players from that winning team. Anyways huge dissapointment man they got eliminated so soon

Yzerman will definetly have Cossa rot away in the ahl another season

I’m really impressed by Anton Johansson’s game. I think he’ll be an NHLer, which is kinda crazy because I thought we let his right expire and weren’t going to sign him. Damn, I’m sure glad we did though.

We were super young this year, especially our defencemen so hopefully they take some strides next season. Next season is going to be great to watch.

no surprise . was known tex was tough af . was also known griffs cant create offense since losing aljo keeping everything in order on the back end . not to mention losing other players from last season to redwings , not as good this season . while also not having any dangerous forwards that can do it on their own besides ammo . and im glad cossa got knocked down a notch making him realize he has stuff to learn , not ready for bigs but has elite tools ecspecially pads . he needs fighter jet training to quicken mind

Yeah I thought he looked great since coming over. Big, mobile, and showed some offense. Still a bit raw but I'm impressed.

I've never put much of anything on the AHL in general or Griffins in particular. Not sure what to make of Horcoff as GM or Watson as coach or Dan Clearly as our developer of NA talent. Literally don't care one way or the other, but it would be nice if we started producing more talent out of NA.

On the one hand, tough to blame Cossa when he faces 49 shots, on the other, he was flat out bad for most of his starts since February. He's played 80 games in the AHL and he'll get at least one more full season down there. I'm glad Yzerman isn't expecting anything out of him in the NHL this next season.

Last night was peak Cossa.

He let in a bad one on a big rebound for the first goal and on the 2nd just got flat out caught behind the crease.

On the other hand, he made 44 saves and had several highlight-level ones that showed his talent.

Disappointing end to the year for him, but I'd again point out that things could be looking a lot worse for his development (Wallstedt!), and I still maintain the team in front of him isn't nearly as good this year.

17 sub 90.0% save games in the regular season and 2 for 2 in the playoffs. Really don't care about Wallstedt, Cossa needs to be more consistent.

I didn’t watch a single Griffins game this year so forgive me here, but it sounds like Cossa was good the first 2/3 of the season then his play dropped off? Seems like he needs to get used to the grind of playing a full, professional season and the workload that comes with it. That, and obviously goalies just take a long to time to develop anyway.

Danielson with 1 point in the playoffs
Cossa sub .800

At what point do we just say our NA scouting is garbage?
Never understood why Cory Pronman so high on Danielson, and he still high on him. I think next season he needs to play less minutes and with less responsibility in Detroit.

44% of his games were a sub 90.0 save percentage. I'm fine with giving him plenty of time, but it's clear he's nowhere near being ready for the NHL. With this being the case I see no problem with having Petr Mrázek as your backup in Detroit next season.

5-4 2OT loss. Season over. For the first 40 minutes they were out there bullying Texas around using the size and physicality advantage that they have on them. It was about time. 2nd period was downright dominant and I can say that was the best period I've seen them play in quite some time. However, a sad 3rd period collapse will be the mark of death for this season. They got beat by the better team plain and simple

I'll be posting my Griffins year-end recap in the next few days hopefully, so keep an eye out for that

My 3 stars:
1) Lombardi
2) Danielson
3) Brandsegg-Nygard

Lines:

Snively - Danielson - Watson
Soderblom - Dries - Shine
Gettinger - Lombardi - Brandsegg-Nygard
Finnie - Seger - Doucet

Wallinder - Johansson
Sandin-Pellikka - Tuomisto
Buium - Didier

Cossa

Danielson: A+
• GOAL - he raced to a loose puck in the corner, flies up the wall to the blueline, drop pass to Buium, puck bounces around and lands in the slot where Danielson is coasting by and pulls off a drag shot for the go-ahead goal

Raced after a loose puck, gets it behind the net and swiftly feeds Watson who's alone in the slot and somehow he shoots that over the net from point blank range..

He was excellent on the OZ entries. Couple nice plays that ended up in decent chances

I'll say this now if I haven't said it before, but he's lost a lot of important OZ faceoffs over the past while. He needs to be better there, especially on a PP

Sandin-Pellikka: B+
• Quiet offensive game from him, you can see these past couple games he's focusing on the defensive side of things. In terms of using his body, and not overcommitting, I liked what I saw

Nice gap as a he cuts off the Star breaking out into the NZ, throws a bit of the body, and the man was separated from the puck where GR gains it and goes right back in the OZ

Coughed up the puck after over-handling it during a 4 on 4, costed Blumel getting a great high slot chance that I think Cossa got a piece of

Cuts down a potential zone exit right at the line, keeps in and Griffs end up scoring 15 seconds later thanks to MBN and Ammo

Using his body and cutting off a man who tries to chip it deep past him

2OT excellent rush defense, gets his body in between the man and the puck and pushes him into the corner, Griffins then get the puck and get it out of the zone

Brandsegg-Nygard: A
• GOAL - maintained zone time and he was left alone in the right circle. He slipped, but got back up just as the Lombardi pass came from behind the net and he wires the one-timer far side

2nd shift nice puck movement with Tuomisto who feeds him back a pass in his feet, gathers, and shoots quickly and just goes high over the net

He was getting to loose pucks first, often. He was also using his body and pivoting to shield the opposing player from getting a touch on the puck, if MBN had it in his possession or not

Cossa: B+
• I was pretty mad about the goal he gifted to the Stars... Which ultimately gave them momentum to come back and tie the game. I was going to give him the A- because he was actually very good this game and made numerous massive saves to keep GR in it. And they weren't lucky saves either. Yet, he caused the momentum shift so I downgraded that. However, he's a really good goalie. He's still big and raw, and at this point I'm not worried about him at all

Huge breakaway save on Blumel at the end of period 1 to keep the game tied at 1 going into intermission

Another MASSIVE save late in period 2, this time a spread eagle glove save on a broken play that has Texas right on his doorstep and he darted across the crease. So quick for such a gigantic goalie

End of period 2 he shuts the door on the Stars PP, controls the rebound and covers up

In OT he makes another HUGE cross-crease save on a wide open Star in front

2OT makes a solid pad stop on a left circle chance, gives up no rebound and covers up

1st goal - he took the high shot off his shoulder and it bounces right to Lind who pounces on it and scores. Didier was weak on his man and Shine let him waltz in behind the D too

2nd goal - gave the puck away behind his net. They made him pay. Very dumb move there

3rd goal - tough luck

4th goal - Stars execute on the PP, Griffins not eliminating the man in front

5th goal - welp, Wallinder loses the battle behind his goal, gets pickpocketed, and Cossa tried to sprawl out but it squeaks past his pad

Lombardi: A+
• GOAL - takes the feed off the OZ entry from Gettinger and now Ammo has a 2 on 1 with MBN posted on the LW side... As the D took the pass option, Ammo takes it to the net and makes a beauty of a tuck around a sprawling Poirier. Oh yeah, and it was his 2nd shift back after leaving for a few shifts from what looked like a leg injury

ASSIST - great work on the wall behind the goal to gain the puck possession and slip a pass to the open MBN who buries the one-timer

Steals the puck, twisting and turning behind the Stars goal in OT they can't catch him and he feeds Tuomisto for a big blast that drops right in front of Hellberg but Stars clear to the line and eventually out

Working hard all night with the puck creating space for himself, and working hard to get the puck, showed good chemistry with MBN it appeared

Wallinder: C+
• Big point blast after GR grinds out possession in the OZ. Stopped by Poirier

Calm and poised with the puck on his stick

He's really been good with not overskating lately. This he's been in better position and is making plays with less energy expenditure

4th Stars goal on the PK I thought he could have been more aggressive in front on the goal scorer

2OT goal he got stick lifted on the puck battle behind his net and the Stars feed in front and out wait Cossa to tuck in the backhand

Buium: A-
• Escapes heavy forecheck, makes play to clear zone. He was great with getting position on his man off he boards and making a play out of it

Nice give-and-go with Lombardi and wired a shot just over the goal from the left circle

One-timer chance again from left circle and Hellberg makes the save

Getting the puck on net lots this game

Tuomisto: A-
• Solid, using size and reach. Moving puck well in all zones. Got quite a few shit attempts off

Johansson: A
• ASSIST - Wow. This shift started when he made a NASTY, ASP-esque dangle at the blueline displaying soft hands and quick feet, evades the defender and walks around him sending his jockstrap into the stratosphere, and then has a lane to walk in buuuuut the shot is blocked. So, Texas exits but eventually Dries and Shine swarm in to close off the lane down the wing, Johansson swoops in and chips it up to a very tired Shine but he has so much time off the RW to fire a great shot top corner

Little chip out from heavy forecheck pressure to a man in support, Griff's exit zone

Solid, far out point shot as the PP expires and it lay there for a sec as Poirier had no idea but nobody could bang it home

He's a very competitive defenseman. Big fan of his game and he showed well

Finnie: B
• Good short area passing

He took a puck from his zone with no help and decided to fly up the RW, puts the puck under the D's stick and gets a great shot off but Poirier makes a nice blocker save on that

Quiet but again a solid game from him

For sure. And I'm even ok with Cossa never being a top tier goalie because I'm convinced Augustine is going to be THE guy for Detroit.

Is this really that out of the ordinary or out of line for goalies? I just quickly looked at Vasilevskiy and 38% of his games were sub 90% this year.

He’s SeBUSTian Cossa again! I always hated him and thought we shoulda picked another goalie!

Also, quality of starts (Gabe’s equal to or better than his overall save percentage) is a good determinant of how impactful a goalie is on their team.

How many games did Cossa have equal to or better than his season average? What percent?
