Prospect Info: Grand Rapids Griffins Discussion

Well at least they woke up a little.
They might want to shuffle off to the kitchen for 'morning' coffee though; day is about to be over before they get there.

4-2 loss for the Griffins, but they showed some effort and won the 3rd. Maybe they have a chance in game 3, but this will be tough.

Three Stars...MBN gets the 2nd.

Just a step slow the entire night. MBN was active and I honestly thought ASP just looked a cut above the other D as far as puck control and poise.

Danielson and Lombardi were pretty invisible. Same for Soderblom. And most of the team.

been very obvious since aljo left griffs dont have enough help for the offense on the back end , and aljo handling puck all 200' was super important to griffs ecspecially in his own end where he kept everything neat n tidy then got the puck up ice . now think about how good hes been for redwings = huge huge loss for griffs . not to mention mazur

They can't win a special teams faceoff for the life of them. They also love to defend in their own zone. Finally showed signs of life in the 3rd. Not a full 60 effort. Do or die on Friday

My 3 stars:
1) Brandsegg-Nygard
2) Wallinder
3) Buium

Lines:

Snively - Danielson - Soderblom
Dries - Lombardi - Shine
Gettinger - Seger - Watson
Finnie - Becher - Brandsegg-Nygard

Wallinder - Sandin-Pellikka
Buium - Johansson
Viro - Tuomisto

Campbell

Danielson: B
• Thought he had some shifty zone entries and couple were cut off due to teammate being offside. Couple good chances got neutered cause of that. Defensively good, but he's not going balls to the wall offensively

Sandin-Pellikka: B+
• Tentative effort on the PP. He seems... Not as intense? Still obviously the most skilled QB GR has

Solid otherwise, didn't really notice him a whole lot which isn't a bad thing

Brandsegg-Nygard: A+
• GOAL - 1st AHL goal! He's posted in the slot all alone after Shine's absolutely INCREDIBLE solo hounddog effort to will the puck back into the GR possession in the OZ so Texas couldn't regroup. MBN fires home the one-timer and makes no mistake!

ASSIST - very nice patience instead of shooting down a lane where traffic was, he delays, freezes the D, throws it down to Shine at the goal line and he sends it off the pad in front to Dries who hammers one home on the PP

First shift he intercepts the Stars just outside the OZ and he chases the puck down, stops up, feeds Tuomisto trailing in who gets a good attempt on goal

Had a huge chance off a deflected Wallinder point shot that landed right there for him in the slot but Poirier stands tall

Good hard shot attempt on Poirier during a PP. Pad save

Showing lots of physical play today finishing checks

Showing some fun puck handles out there. He was really all over the puck and it just followed him around. It was on his stick a shit ton tonight

Lombardi:
• Very quick game. Did get some rushes and touches with the puck but Stars were quick to surround him all game

Wallinder: A
• Carried DZ exit to OZ entry a few times. Encouraging to see as he displayed what looked like convicted decision-making with his puck moving and puck carrying

Made a really good small area pass while pinned on the boards during the PK, Griff's clear out. Stars rush back and then he reads the play superbly and pokes the puck away at the blueline preventing the entry. Looked effortless there

He does the same thing next period at 5 on 5, well positioned just inside the red line and picks off a pass, then just darts into the offensive zone past traffic that was flat footed and forces them to attack him. He gets disrupted but Griffins swarm and then gather possession for a an eventual shot deflected out of play

Shuts down a Star on the rush 1 on 1 and separates him from the puck too

Once again, heavy board pressure and he doesn't panick, finds his D partner and feeds him into open space, commence breakout

Buium: B+
• Completely shuts down a rush at his blueline with a poke and GR goes back the other way

Reliable play tonight

Tuomisto: B+
• 4th Stars goal his lack of footspeed left him a step behind McKenzie breaking in and was able to beat Campbell on a clean shot

Shut down a play at the end of period 2 in front of his net. Positioning+reach there. Same shift eliminates his man on the rush, separates him from the puck and GR gains possession

Becher: C+
• Didn't notice him at all aside from one shifty move he had in period 1 to then carry into the OZ

Johansson: B-
• 1st Stars goal he tried to sauce a high pass behind his net to Buium and the forechecker knocks it down with his stick, Buium is too slow to get in front of the man quickly so the Star cuts in front of the goal and it's a mad scramble. Johansson can't eliminate his man at the doorstep and it gets poked into the goal. I won't mark him down for the puck out of mid-air, but rather not pummeling his man in the crease and giving him nothing to poke at

Streaking in late during a 4 on 4 and gets the Elmer cross-ice pass but Poirier once again up to the task on a god chance

Under duress behind his net, he's good at taking a look then making a play with accuracy

Finnie: C+
• NZ pass interception, carries into OZ but ran out of space to really do much other than throw it on net from the wall

So much for that long playoff run for all these top prospects, especially Cossa, who's pulled after 1 game. Hopefully Cossa gets game 3 since it might be their last. Dan Watson is not a good coach, too bad this team couldn't get Todd Nelson back, they'd be contending.

They want Cossa getting experience, yet they go with the vet backup after 1 bad start from Cossa? Dumb! I don't care if they think Campbell was the right call, it makes no sense when the point is getting the kids playoff experience. Team still lost and got outshot worse so not exactly making a difference, so play the kid. Even if he sucks, he gets experience.

The funny thing is the entire D was the kids.
