Prospect Info: Grand Rapids Griffins Discussion

Solid, and much needed 2-1 win!

My 3 stars:
1) Cossa
2) Lombardi
3) Becher/Finnie

Lines:

Snively - Danielson - Gettinger
Dries - Lombardi - Shine
Finnie - Becher - Doucet
Bantle - Seger - Johannes

Wallinder - Johansson
Buium - Viro
Knyzhov - Tuomisto

Cossa

Danielson: B
• Enters OZ and drives middle to LW inside OZ to get a pass from Gettinger, button hooks, and gets Buium up in the play from the blueline and drops a pass to him where Buium then sends a great cross-crease pass to Doucet who got TOTALLY ROBBED by Commesso

Saved a goal by jumping in quick and leveraging his stick down on the open man's stick in the slot off a rebound. Nate was showing escapability with the puck in the DZ once again too

Strange, in period 2 the PP2 subbed off Danielson for Tuomisto and that unit went with two defensemen. AnJo the other D. They also added Seger to that PP. Finnie and Becher remained. Tuomisto and Seger on the PP is... a choice. Danielson played I think 3 shifts that period and the 3rd one was in the last minute. Nate's gotta be tired or something. All situations basically all year has to wear down on a first year pro

Cossa: A+
• Challenging shooters aggressively at the top of the goal mouth. Tipped point shot he gave no rebound. All night he was swallowing rebounds whole

A few tough saves as Hog's were getting his eyes and he had to be sharp. His shot recovery was dialed in too

1st goal - Buium left the man wide open to bury the cross-crease. No chance for Cossa there

Lombardi: A+
• ASSIST - 5 on 3 PP SOG bounces in the air and Dries bats it home. He was really handling the puck and using space well

Walks into the slot from the left wall off a broken play- Commesso blocker save

Takes the puck on a breakout down RW enters OZ, slows his pace, Shine drives net, Ammo stick handles a bit as he sees Dries trailing and feeds him but Dries hits the inside of the post going against the grain

Nasty stick handles on display. I feel like he's been more impressive over the past few weeks with his stick handling in tight space. Not to mention his edges and how he can stay in stride and push off them even while a defender is checking him

Wallinder: A-
• Good breakout pass, displayed a bit of patience and delay for the checker to move out of his passing lane and gets it to Finnie at the half-wall

Getting pucks on net

He's definitely aggressive defensively and relies on his athleticism. I wonder how far it will take him, but he's fast and covers lots of ice

Buium: B-
• ASSIST - 5 on 3 PP goal by Dries

Oh my... he should've had a gimme assist on a cross-crease pass to Doucet but Commesso... No idea how he got across to make that save and swallow up the rebound

I really don't like how nonchalant he is with the puck sometimes

Hog's 1st goal he couldn't get the puck out and got beat in the puck battle at the half-wall, and then he drags his feet as he leaves an open man going to the net and they bury the wide open cross-crease goal

Tuomisto: A-
• Aggressive play off good reads defensively seeing when his partner was eliminated from the play or still in it

Becher: A
• GOAL - PP, he reads the seam and corrals the cross-ice pass from Seger in stride and goes top shelf, far side, with a quick release

Next shift he displayed how good at putting the puck in his opponents feet. Then shifts direction and feeds Doucet in the OZ for a chance on goal

Going through the crease and gathering rebounds

PP in period 2 he did a catch-and-release again from the right dot and it glanced off the post and out of play

Johansson: A-
• I like how shoots and moves the puck quick off the OZ blueline

He's become more poised defensively over the past handful of games... Great to see from him. Can not only neutralize a player, but has the skating and hands to then turn it in transition sometimes

He has done this almost every game and in multiple times in those games, but his short range passes are kind of mini hail marys. He needs better accuracy as they're not on the tape or they're flubbed when he has a moment to control them. These can leave teammates in bad spots and having to recover

Finnie: A
• ASSIST - he chips up the LW to Seger who enters zone and Finnie drives middle as Seger finds Becher who goes top shelf from the right circle

Heading back up ice after a Doucet DZ interception, he gets on his horse and darts up the middle to become a support option and Douce gives him the puck. Finnie slows his pace a bit and put the puck in the D's feet where Becher is streaking behind, swoops in and takes the puck and now has a mini breakaway but his stick gets chopped in half just as he's about to take a shot

Lombardi went up ice down LW, and Finnie coming with him down center ice. Finnie cuts in front of Lombardi but doesn't go offside, takes away a defender's stick as Ammo cuts into the middle and the suddenly Finnie has a lane right down the middle with space to the net. Ammo sees this and flips a backhand pass that just gets swatted out from mid-air. Finnie has been showing some veteran play already and he's still 19

Thanks once again. Next game you get to add ASP and MBN

He’s got 5 points last 6 games, that’s pretty good!!
Thats awesome for a guy coming up from juniors and just starting his pro career. Kasper has always taken time to adjust to the next level and surely didn't light up the AHL right away, Danielson has taken some time to adjust. That's not to say they wont be great players, and im not saying Finnie is in any way a better prospect than those two, but Finnie needing essentially no time to adjust to the AHL is a very good sign. I think a bottom six swiss army knife type of guy, or a top 6 complimentary winger in the mold of 2007-2011 Dan Cleary would be an absolute home run. However, if he continues to be productive throughout next season and has an awesome AHL campaign we may have to raise the bar.

Could be a big year for Finnie and Becher next year in terms of minutes opportunity. We don't really have a ton of players graduating to GR and I think at least two of Mazur, Danielson, and Ammo probably make the team. Both could have a shot in the top 6 if MBN is the only other prospect forward add.

Maybe we see Finnie go back to center if Danielson and Ammo graduate.

Has anyone heard anything about Kiiskinen coming over next year. I'm not sure there is much for him left to do in Liiga.

My prediction for lines tonight as Watson has been sent back down to GR:

Snively - Danielson - Watson
Dries - Lombardi - Shine
Finnie - Becher - Brandsegg-Nygard
Gettinger - Seger - Doucet

Wallinder - Johansson
Buium - Sandin-Pellikka
Knyzhov - Tuomisto

...Suddenly, that lineup looks MUCH more poised for the playoffs

Thread needs more Becher hype, IMO.
Really intriguing player. Sneaky confident hands and feet coordination, good shot release, and very defensively sound. He could be another Lombardi for us but not quite as fast/flashy. As a visual reference, Becher looks kind of like a Datsyuk in his maneuvers, and Lombardi looks like a Matt Duchene when he maneuvers. If that makes sense

Becher adding another gear of top speed and adding a bit more beef onto his frame this offseason will make him a surefire top 6 guy next season for GR and poised for a big season

For reference to their age 20 seasons; he's got 20 points in 57 games versus Ammo's 26 in 70 games last year

That third line will cause some trouble
