Prospect Info: Grand Rapids Griffins Discussion

Yeah Cossa's has not been impressive at all.

Doesnt seem to track the puck well. Just a lot of hoping the puck hits him.

Im not a goalie expert but he seems to make himself smaller.

Like he drops to the butterfly too soon and invites guys to pick the top corner.

Becher scored a nice goal from Finnie.
Ya saw that , he’s been playing well .... that Czech guy they brought In was he even in the lineup? Doesn’t look like he was s good addition

I live outside of Cleveland so I took my 10 year old son to the game tonight. I’m not much of a scout, but Danielson and Lombardi were pretty clearly the best two guys. The entire d core was terrible, although they did look big out there. Buium in particular couldn’t handle the puck and turned it over frequently.

Finnie looked like a kid, but fit in and looked pretty good to me. Cossa made a couple good saves but was bad overall.

Fun night out with the boy.

4/9 Griffins @ Monsters

Camera angle in this game 3/10... Better grade than I'll give the Griffins for dropping the game after controlling the 1st period

My 3 stars:
1) Danielson
2) Lombardi
3) Becher

Lines:

Snively - Danielson - Gettinger
Dries - Lombardi - Shine
Finnie - Becher - Doucet
Bantle - Seger - Johannes

Wallinder - Tuomisto
Buium - Johansson
Viro - Didier

Cossa

Danielson: A
• Nice offensive zone pressure first few shifts of the game

Didn't make a good play along the half-wall in the DZ and tried to force the play up ice under pressure, puck got loose but 10 seconds later he retrieves the puck and starts the breakout to get out of the zone and then actually sustain some good OZ time and managed to facilitate a line change during that

Fanned on a breakout pass when he had time, then got a pass off but got picked off and the Monsters went in and almost sniped but sails just over the net

OZ pressure he anticipates Cleveland trying to break out off the half wall, easy pick off, and spins firing a shot on goal as he knew Gettinger and Snively were around the net area. Save by Greaves

Beast tonight pressuring the puck carriers forcing them to make plays

I really have to say he was looking super slick weaving around the ice - particularly the OZ - with and without the puck... Creating space nicely with the puck where it looked like he didn't have much at all to work with. Slithering into the slot area as a shooting or passing option. I know it seems inconsequential to point this stuff out if he's not blowing up the scoresheet. I can't help but think what kind of offense he's capable of when guys like ASP and co. are the ones he's distributing back and forth with. His untapped offense is a big reason why he rose to 9th overall late in the season on a poor Brandon team, and actual NHL scouts loved him. Danielson is developing just as I'd hoped, and I'm sure Red Wings management is too

WhY dOeS dANiELsOn GeT hIgH mArKs AnD fIrSt StAr FoR zErO pOiNtS?!?!?! Because... I'm legally blind, obviously. AI writes this shit for me

Cossa: C
• Was making some good stops throughout the game, and despite the defensive breakdowns being a real problem with this team, he's been getting the corners picked on him regularly. Dude is 6'7 against AHLers, so what's been going on there? Also, just play the heck outta him down the stretch. He needs to get in a rhythm like, yesterday. He just also needs to play like a 15th overall pick playing his 2nd full AHL season as the starting goaltender. The defense was much better last year obviously, but he needs to lock in and sort out some of those holes in his game before we start handing him NHL starts and ruin his confidence

1st goal he got sniped high glove

2nd goal Wallinder gets skated around and McKown tucks it in tight. Poke check was weak, goes 5-hole. Needs to be better there

3rd goal Buium gives the Monsters a gift wrapped puck in the slot, 5 seconds later it's in the back of the net, gets sniped

4th goal on the PP got absolutely sniped again high blocker this time

Lombardi: A
• ASSIST - oh beautiful patience on the 2 on 1, displays once again deceptive hands + feet and feeds Dries who one-times it past Greaves

Back at center in this game. He was quite impressive defensively. Including a late 1st breakout he darts behind his net to pressure the puck carrier, then Cleveland fumbles it as he's still on them, gets a 2 on 1 again with Dries and this time goes to the net with some nice handles but I think Greaves just stops it or Ammo tucks it off the outside of the post. He retrieves his puck, sustains more possession himself and for his team briefly

Never gives up on a puck. I do love that layer on his skillset. He's not just some flashy player. I see some real translatable offense skills developing late in the season here

Wallinder: C+
• Quick decision making with the puck on the boards in tough spots. When he had time though, with limited options, he makes a forced play hoping for some kind of hail Mary that isn't there

McKown walked around Wallinder on goal #2 and he buries it on Cossa

Buium: C+
• Quick decision making with the puck on the boards in tough spots, as well as good mid-range breakout passing under pressure EXCEPT........

He made a bad play taking the pass from Cossa and forces a pass up the middle off his backhand... Trying to rely on his skills or whatever you wanted to call that. Monsters immediately make it a bang-bang play into the back of the net

Really good reads to anticipate and intercept to maintain OZ pressure

PP point shot off the crossbar. Another shot of his is tipped right on. Getting clean looks

Tuomisto: A-
• Cutting down space in the NZ, and just inside his D very nicely

Moving well around the OZ and making plays, taking shots from range on goal

Battling hard along the boards in the DZ, staying positioned well at that

Becher: A
• GOAL - super nice one-touch finish on the breakaway goal goes 5-hole and Greaves had no idea what to do. His route on that play started with him behind his own net and then getting lost up the right side and breaking free when Finnie chips it to him

Showing some nasty handles on a solo breakout although I would've liked if he used Finnie. He shifts past a check, and then goes inside-outside and completely undresses the D-man, stops up to take a look, feeds Wallinder at the point, then Tuomisto gets a pass and his shot deflects out of the zone. The breakout started because of Becher's positioning and support to Tuomisto who was cutting off the puck carrier just inside the DZ blueline

Great work defensively. Hustling hard, and also evading heavy forecheck

Johansson: B
• Many shooting attempts

Displayed some better decision making with the puck under pressure in his own zone

Bit more stable game today

Finnie: A
• ASSIST - SMART route he took up the middle to the left boards, catches the flying pass and chops it to Becher streaking in down the middle and he finishes a beauty shot on the breakaway

Good DZ breakout support, and good off-puck awareness in the DZ too. Hustles to loose pucks

Really nice backhand pass spinning off a check from below the goal line, Doucet got stopped in tight

Nice feed from lombardi on the 4-2 goal, Yzerman has no chance but to play a ton of rookies next season after delaying everyone

Lombardi danielson wallinder tuomisto pellika nygaard , buchelnikov if he comes down all fighting for spots ... Yzerman needs to get rid of a ton of deadweight this off season

Was at the game tonight. Johansson needs to put on weight but he’s smooth. Another 2 assists tonight.

Lombardi had a beautiful rush for an assist and Danielson was solid all night and got the empty netter

Good night for the kids.

Gutsy win, gotta thank Campbell for playing a huge part in this one as GR was porace defensively a lot of the time

My 3 stars:
1) Lombardi
2) Danielson
3) Johansson

Lines:

Snively - Danielson - Gettinger
Dries - Lombardi - Shine
Finnie - Becher - Doucet
Bantle - Seger - Johannes

Wallinder - Johansson
Buium - Knyzhov
Viro - Tuomisto

Campbell

Danielson: A+
• GOAL - empty net, in close catches an awkward pass off his backhand, goes forehand really quickly, and somehow elevated it over the sliding defenseman

End of a PP took a short pass from Finnie and along the boards makes a deft cut to the middle where he subtly faked a shot to freeze the D and goalie, passed to Finnie at the post who just couldn't finish as he was in a bit too tight. Love the deception there from Nate but probably could've done just as good to shoot that one too

Hops off bench during Griff's OZ pressure, takes puck just inside the blueline going down the LW and stops up just before the goal line to create tonnes of space for himself, sends a cross ice pass tape-to-tape to a wide open Johansson but he couldn't finish off the right circle

Once again, calm escapability to neutralize opposing possession

Lombardi: A+
• ASSIST - PP on the goal line Shine gets the pass from Ammo, Shine takes it in and bangs home his own rebound. Had all day to do it

ASSIST - oh my god he made that look way too easy... Griffins breakout 3 on 2 and he corrals an awkward loose puck, enters the OZ, walks around the Stars D right into the middle and down main street, evades the last D's poke check and feeds cross-crease scoop pass to Dries to who buries it

4 on 4 expires, he goes from his own zone, coasting with the puck to the OZ, then a sneaky toe drag to change the angle on his shot and shoots just wide

Good hustle defensively with picking pockets

Wallinder: C+
• ASSIST - secondary assist via a D to D pass (that he almost passed out of the zone) to AnJo, his shot is knocked down but Seger spins, shoots, and scores

ASSIST - secondary assist again, D to D pass to AnJo and he feeds Snively

Got out muscled behind his net for the puck when he had time and space to begin with, nearly leads to Texas getting a bang-bang chance from the slot

Flat footed in the NZ as Texas throws the puck from the LW his way in the middle of the ice to a streaking Blumel (38 goal scorer), and Blumel easily comes up with it out of WW's feet, gets the breakaway chance but again Campbell bailing these guys out

Needs to start moving the puck. Enough deferring to his partner to move it up ice

Buium: B-
• Showed once he makes that extra push with his skates to get to a loose puck behind his goal and sweep it to a teammate, out of danger. Making good decisions with the puck to evade pressure

Occasionally lackadaisical with his puck management, especially when he feet are not moving. This has consistently been a problem with him for the past while

Tuomisto: B
• Battling hard on the boards. Once shift in the OZ displaying puck handling ability

Lost position in front of his net allowing Seminoff a chance right in front. Campbell really bailed him out as he was doing all night

Fires one off the post from long range in the last minute

Becher: B+
• In the OZ with soft hands he knocks down a puck that went straight in the air and taps a little back pass to his teammate for a shot

Johansson: A+
• ASSIST - point shot knocked down but Seger spins, shoots, and scores

ASSIST - takes the D to D pass from Bantle and then fakes a shot as he senses Snively trailing from behind off the bench and drops off a nice pass where Joe fires it home through traffic

Top pair D tonight with Wallinder and AnJo carried the pair. Best overall game so far of his young AHL career. Seemed he was picking up where he left off from last game in terms of when to compete for pucks without losing position, and not to force dangerous plays in his zone

Nice offensive activation, and getting pucks on net

Battling hard for pucks on the boards and not losing position, keeping Griffs possession

Finnie: A-
• Really, really solid defensively again. You can tell he's a natural C the way he supports and retrieves pucks

Nice give and go with Becher he takes a good one-timer from the shart right angle, save by the goalie

Getting the puck on his stick plenty. Nothing too crazy materialized, but the puck is following him already, consistently. Great signs

I’m not sure we end up with that many rookies on the roster. Every year the fanbase overestimates how many rookies they’ll be on opening night and then gets disappointed. I could see any or all of those guys starting in GR. I can’t see more than 2 or 3 of those guys making it along with Mazur.

But I’ve been wrong before. Maybe we land Marner at a painful number and need to fill a lot of holes with cheap ELCs.

I like the determination from Finnie to rip one from the shart angle
